Match Thread: RU v Princeton

Correnti damn near beat that kid. Grello was screwed. Any other ref than that whole would have called the pin. First he runs around Grello which took about 2-3 seconds. I am at mat side with my seats and that kids shoulders were dead flat. He did not have the balls to call it. Match never should have gone to Colucci needing a major.
Absolutely that was a pin ..flat for more then 5 seconds ..ref was so far out of position it was a disgrace ..even when he did get in position he still missed it ..a pin there and it didn’t matter whether Christian majors his guy ...having said that he came up huge and got done what needed to be done ...great match for the team

The sad part is RU isnt that good and the battle for NJ is much about nothing..

To think an RU loss today means 2 Ivy league schools will be ranked higher. Also, wheres RU gonna be after Ash & NS leave? Wheres the national level depth or recruits?

We need to block out folks that make stupid comments like this..

Nah, i love not blocking guys like this. They just ooze the unabashed arrogance that makes everyone hate PSU. They truly cannot help themselves, and then wonder why they are the most universally disliked fan base in the nation. To a person, it seems, they prove all the stereotypes true...

Agreed. IF Colucci did not get the MD this place would have been a PSU cesspool who couldn’t post here quick enough. Winning keeps people quiet. Unfortunately a bad loss like Utah Valley gives people room to talk. Love that we pulled the W and Ayers may have goaded (or truly believed AA couldn’t score) Ash a bit but is humble in defeat. I didn’t mind him but Joe needs to give it a rest. Sorry but Goody and Joe are not similar in their mannerisms whoever is out there saying that.

Interesting Utah valley did not throw starters out there.
I know they have wrestled a lot of matches this year.

Why schedule the match if you are going to wrestle 2nd stringers/

PS- Anthony Ashnault has only 1 more home match in his RU Career....Sunday, Feb 17 against Michigan and Malik Amine.
Suriano will face #3 Steven Micic in that match.

All of RU's other remaining duals are on the road (Indiana, Purdue and Maryland) Most likely RU will go 3-1 in the remaining 4 matches.

We should take ashnault win with a grain of salt. I hope he does.

Twice, Kolodzik sat and turned. Both times ash got Two NF points. I’ll bet he doesn’t do that again.

Those 4 points and the riding time point make this a 5-2 match. It’s not crazy to say they are closer levels than the score suggests.

You are right, its not crazy, but the bottom line Ash got to his shots, broke through Kolodzik's defense, which is his strength, and basically ran him over twice. Kolodzik never got a shot off and never effectively countered anything Ash threw at him (except maybe avoiding the pin). So while they are probably closer than the score, I am not so sure Kolodzik is at Ash's level right now. Obviously things can change and Kolodzik certainly has the talent to flip this result by the time March rolls around.

Ash absolutely needs to keep this intensity right through the end at this point. I believe he will do it.

Ashnault has now beaten Kolo 16-4 in their last 2 matches.
In his post match interview yesterday he said he felt he could have scored even more .

I think Micah Jordan is more of a threat to AA than Kolo at this point.

The sad part is that you (by design) contribute nothing positive to this forum. Let’s have fun with today’s match. Can a depleted RU squad pull out a win against a much improved PU program? Also, the fact that Princeton even has a wrestling team today is a testament to an amazing effort by Alumni to save one of the oldest programs in the country. Long term RU will be fine. Lots of talent coming into the pro

I think Micah jumps Kolodzik in the rankings this week so Ash is 1, Micah 2, Kolodzik 3 and Gfeller at 4.

Ash has to finish in the #1 spot. Put Micah and Kolodzik in the other bracket. Then Ash will be with O'Connor and Gfeller or maybe Finesilver, and a big dropoff after that.

I disagree. Micah Jordan is terrible on bottom. In fact, if I were Ash, I would choose top in the rematch.

I think the CKLV point flurry by Micah was Ash knowing he is ahead, wrestling at 90% to make sure he doesn't get turned.

There will be a lot of adjustments made before March rolls around. As long as AA is on his game, keeping his intensity at a high pace also adjusting to whatever is thrown at him.

Unfortunately Purdue on the road looks like a bad match up and will be a tough out. 157, 184 (Gravina not fully healthy) and 285 are toss ups and they most likely take 4 bouts (125, 141, 174, 197). Need MD's or greater from AA, NS and Glasgow.

Probably not going to see Gravina or especially Glasgow. The Purdue kid at 165 is a lot tougher than his record. He is even better than the Princeton kid.Glasgow is not in any position to major anyone moreless win the match.I think Gravina will be continued caution to keep him healthy for the Big Ten tournament.

Vanbrill has an opportunity to beat a higher ranked Parriot.

If AA loses in the B10 Championships, where will he be seeded?
I would agree, it is better to face Gfeller than battle tested Kolo or Micah.

Either way, Ash has proven he can beat all of the top contenders and if he wrestles like he has this year, will be NCAA Champ.

Very good article with lots of quotes on how great the atmosphere was for the match yesterday:

https://www.nj.com/rutgers/index.ss...n_super_bowl_sunday_and_it_was_glorious.html#
Sorry Glory, but you don't wrestle in front of crowds like this over at Jadwin gym. NJ college wrestling for fans is Rutgers. I was there last year and if it wasn't for the Rutgers faithful you would have wrestled in front of 100 people. So you're damn right it's bittersweet but I really can't knock your academic college of choice.

So glad Ash dominated, we won, and The RAC was rockin. Some comments...

Grello had the pin, but I don't think he took a shot the entire match which is his MO and will not lead to a successful March. The real concern for me is that he isn't doing as much on top anymore.
Correnti is pretty similar on his feet and may have pulled out a W if he was aggressive and shooting more, but I get that the strategy this match may have been don't do something stupid to give up bonus points.
It’s pretty well known that we had two recruiting classes that were real solid on paper but didn’t pan out. The coaches take the blame for that and now we are seeing the results. We’ve recruited solid again since then and should be ok moving forward. Development needs to really take place though or else we could find ourselves in serious plateau mode
3 classes in a row. Can't have that again. Hopefully, 2018 and 19 have major contributors and AAs.
Gravina has had zero offense since coming back.
He hasn't been much different than the past few years. He has 1 good shoulder (maybe?) so he can't shoot or the bad one pops out. He's all slide by/throw by/duck under, counter, spin from his feet. It should not surprise anyone.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't knock great preparation and coaching. Clearly, Ash and/or coaches saw something on video as Ash was looking pancake.

True, but all reports indicated he was feeling great and was fully healthy now after the surgery. Had hopes of seeing him at full strength, but that hasn't happened.

He's had like 15 shoulder surgeries (maybe an exaggeration but you get it) and after every one the reports are that he feels great and is 100%. You have to realize that's never been the case and no one will say anything other than what's been said publicly.

Disageee on Correnti. He certainly hasn’t been great in some Matches but he was in this one. I’d argue he was the aggressor and very close to that Takedown which gives him a 3-1 lead. Brucki is #3 and a hammer and he gave him all he could handle. No moral Victories but kid left his all out there. Hs wrestles like that test of season and he will be a tough to beat.

Yes, know several people very good friends with him. His shoulder is shot. Obviously not a huge piece of news but he’s basically wrestling to keep match close and win with Riding, backs, Escapes and maybe an occasional shrug or front headlock. No shooting for him.

Also heard he’s going to be on The Bergen Catholic coaching staff next year. Guess we will see.

Nick Gravina is the most wonderful young man I have had the pleasure to meet and befriend. Sadly he is a shell of his former self. He is a warrior so he goes out there for the team. I hope he retires so he can enjoy his kids and eventually grandkids with a functioning shoulder.

If that happens, RU ends up with its 3rd winning B1G wrestling season out of 5.
