Miami loses yet again ; Fordham falls to Maine

Look, any road win is huge when you’ve been as pathetic away from home as this program but it’s becoming evident Miami might not be any good.

Lost by double digits at Penn last night.

And Fordham fell in double OT to a previously winless Maine outfit. Saturday has to be a win to keep this train moving forward.
It really makes no difference though this year. We are not going to post season play so quality wins don't matter. Just need to get to 15+ wins. If you are trying to gauge how good we are you can argue our loses to MSU and Wisconsin tell us as much as the Miami win. We are a solid young team.

I would rather trust my own eyes than what a team does after losing to us. Teams go into slumps and Miami is a talented squad that is not playing their best right now.

As for us, I know what I saw against Miami, MSU and Wisconsin. I saw a team that is super young, and is good enough already to play with anyone, and beat anyone on the right night.

Im hoping we and see the groundwork in place to have a Minnesota 15-17' type jump next year in all honestly. The best part is we dont have to do it with a scummy Pitino on the bench.

I see Main, Fordham and Columbia as all Ws at this point. They should be wins at this tenure in Pikes build. I watched Fordham/Maine last night, both teams are terrible.

If we had lost to Miami and then they tanked like they have, what would the fans be saying? I am in the camp of being impressed with what this team has shown to date. We have to win at least 3 of the next four and the picture looks good to do so. The SHU game is always different no matter what the records with it being the rivalry it is.

100%. Throw out each team's record. Throw out perception of how good/bad each team is. It's going to be a war. I'm giving SHU the psychological edge in this one. They're home, their fans will be juiced, and they're looking to avenge last year's loss. Should be fun.

Yeah, this game is always a dogfight. The average margin of victory over the last 20 years is 3 pts (including the recent consecutive 27+ pt blowouts under EJ). The series record is 30-39 in their favor, but we are just 6-17 at their place.

The new guys didn't seem intimidated by MSU or Wisconsin so I expect them to be ready to go against SHU and wanting to make a statement that they own this rivalry from now on. There should be plenty of Rutgers fans at the game too. Pike is gonna close that gap in the all time series

The Miami win is what it is. A road win against a mediocre team. Anyone who watched the game can tell you that Miami is not that good. However, we have fans here getting excited and penciling in 8-9 conference wins. I’m not saying to not get excited. I like the team and the roster. But we’re still a player or two away from being able to close out games. We’re a competent team with B1G players. I know that takes some time getting used to. But let’s temper our expectations. I don’t want to hear fire Pike chants when we don’t make the NIT this year

Miami is still #40 in Ken Pom. Right around the mark of several Big Ten teams that would also be nice road wins for Rutgers. Let's not act like they're #200 just yet.

Miami was a win. New programs need a schedule that shows progress for them to eventually evolve.

Just a step in the process. The program will see it's fair share of challenges.

Except literally no one is saying that

Our Miami victory looking less impressive AND Fordham game looking less didficult

I think this team will have some difficult games against bad teams and some good games against some really good teams. The youth and unpredictability of this team makes it frustrating and exciting at the same time. You can't just plunk down a W or an L in advance anymore. It comes with building a program and is a good thing.

I have no idea how Kenpom works. But Miami is 5-4 and just got it handed to them by Penn. I’m not saying winning on the road isn’t impressive. All I’m saying is Miami is mediocre right now. That’s okay. Let’s beat Fordham and just roll

Kenpom is still relying on Miami's 37th final ranking from last year. For them to be 40th right now, all we know is that the algorithm for this year has them as "worse than last year" - but we have no idea by how much, because we don't know how quickly the 2017-18 data will wean itself out of the algorithm.

Well we sort of do. Rutgers has moved up almost 50 spots from last year. Presumably, it would be just as easy to move down 50 spots.

The real point is it's a possession based model that accounts for strength of opponent. Yes, there is some weight from last year but dropping from 37 to 40 isn't really moving at all.

I’ve seen some people here and on the facebook page estimating 8-9 conference wins. I’ve seen some people say 18 wins here
I'm talking about firing Pike if we don't make the NIT. No one anywhere is talking about firing Pike.

Miami is still better than both Penn State and Illinois, two teams we play away in conference.

very unlikely, I do not know why our fans continue to put the cart before the horse with the program

I'm not saying this to be funny... I really don't understand how some Rutgers (football, basketball, whatever) fans are so optimistic still. I mean I get being optimistic in a general sense for the direction of the program, but still.

Enjoy Arthur Avenue. A number of favorites but Gerbasi is a sleeper. Perhaps a tad pricey but worth it. I’m sure you will come out of Rose Hill with a win. Stroll the campus and you won’t believe you’re in the Bronx.

I know I know. But the way some of our fans are and the fact that some have already questioned his recruiting ability. I can guarantee you some will question his coaching abilities when the record isn’t that much better

You're right but I just think it is such a small number of people. The vast majority of the boards seem thrilled with the team, the way they play, and the direction of the program. I have seen some people question Pike with the Ash comparisons and saying he needs to step up recruiting but those are the people who either aren't paying attention or just don't get it.

As for people saying we could get 18 wins.... sure why not? Some hope on the board is better than the years of nothing but misery. Let these people get excited and shoot for the stars. Unlikely? Of course. But you never know. I certainly am not admitting defeat and expecting losses to anyone. This team has a legit chance of beating anyone in the league as they showed against MSU and Wisconsin so to say this team has no shot of overachieving doesn't make sense either. What happens if our 3 ball comes back consistently? What if Mathis and Harper really start clicking? Maybe we catch a few teams on off nights or some teams miss some key players with injuries when they face us? Let's see how this team looks in January after a month of easy games and extra practice time. We should be even further improved by the time we get back into the B1G schedule. People on the board are so quick to poo poo anyone who is hoping for an overchieving season, but... Why not us? The players don't look like they want to wait til next season to make their mark on the league. We as fans shouldn't be throwing this season away either.

If it doesn't happen this year fine. We werent expected to anyway but let's not write off this season. Nothing wrong with hoping for more and being ok with it if it doesn't happen knowing where the program is headed. Regardless of the record this season I have no doubt the program is headed in the right direction and think we can dance next year.

I am firmly on team give Pike a lifetime contract

Totally agree! Spot on. I like to occasionally toss some stuff out there because OF COURSE we’re going to pay attention to Miami after a win then they tumble. I like Pike, but I get really really nervous when I see some stuff here. You’re clearly a rational fan who doesn’t bash a guy because he didn’t land his 15 (exaggerating) 4 star guy in 2 years

These freshman will develop.

Pikiell recruits are not always real players in year 1. Year 2 and 3 is when you start the praises.

He will miss on some players like many coaches do. It happens. You just try to limit it.

I don’t see Miami turning it around I’ve watched four of their games and they look pretty bad. The ACC looks to be pretty tough sans Pitt and Miami.

Wake Forest looks brutal too.
