Midwestern Columnist not fan of DC B1G tourney

I am happy to be in the B1G, but I really don't see why we were invited. The average NY metro sports fan is no more interested in Michigan State playing Iowa in football or basketball.

In prior decades it made sense to have leagues based on geography to cut down the cost of travel and establishing rivalries. Those days are over with college athletics now big business and expanding media markets. There will always be individuals that prefer the old days because of tradition and there isn't anything wrong with having that viewpoint.

why do national media guys act like this and whine when they know full well how it works with conferences and money. The days of 70s Big 10, Big 8, Pac 10, Southwest, ACC conferences are over with. Its not about regionality anymore. Move on

I think the attendance next year will be near sold out every night and on par with the Chicago tournaments of the past. He is right about compromising a bit since we are a week ahead of the Big East in order to be in MSG. Is MSG that important compared to the Barclays Center or Prudential Center?

That's where NCAA dropped the ball. It isn't about the student athlete when a Rutgers woman's volleyball player has to take 7 or 8 plane rides per year.

There should have been some geography boundaries when schools looked to join conferences.

Obviously football makes this all complicated.

I have no big problem with holding the tourney out east on occasion, and I might even try to make it to MSG next year. I do sort of question having it in the east in back-to-back years. Indianapolis and Chicago make much more sense for the league geographically, although I realize it's all about the bucks now. I agree it's a little ridiculous for the guy to be talking about a "flirtation" when Penn State has now been in the conference for 25 years.

I would think/hope that B1G tournament would be completely sold out for all sessions. Doesn't mean only 3000 show up on Wednesday and 7000 on Thursday.

RU fans need to show up...I realize our fanbase is small and the program has not been good but you cannot have a tourney in your backyard and then get 500 fans to your game. I just do think that RU fans have ever embraced the whole idea of big time athletics like other schools have. I never saw a large RU presence at the BE tourney. Of course it has a lot to do with not winning. Consider we have literally LOST an entire generation of fans....RU has no hoops fans in their 20s and not many in their 30s and even maybe up to 45. ....its a huge base totally gone because of our last of success. Our fanbase is very old. You have the fans from back in the 60s who are now pushing or over 70...the fans from the final 4 teams are now in their late 50s and early 60s. Then you have some like me from the last gasp of success that are in their mid to late 40s. Other than that a few okay Bannon and Waters years didnt create any new fans. Football seems to have a younger fanbase of course due to its success in the Schiano era.

I am saving now and definitely in for next years tournament. I want to see all the schools not just RU.

As someone who's attended multiple days for all 3 seasons of the BIG tourneys RU has participated in, and tourneys in the A10, American and Big East...

The Big Ten has a looooong way to go to catch any one of those events. Lousy timing of games, next to no atmosphere, older professional buildings with no panache or flair. Truly...Devoid of fun, no matter who you cheer for.

They'd be wise to re-examine what they do before they bring the same old crap show to the Garden next year

Is a two hour plane flight worse for the student athlete than a bus trip to Syracuse or Boston?

They should rotate it between the regions of the B10:
- Chicago, Indianapolis, DC, NY / NJ, Minneapolis, Auburn Hills, Cleveland

Basically rotate between B10 Western location (ie. Minneapolis, Omaha), B10 Central location (ie. Chicago , Indianapolis, Auburn Hills), and B10 eastern location (ie. NY/ NJ, DC, Cleveland). If you do West, central, East, Central than all should be happy.

The one year we were in the American we lost a game by 61 points.
I figure the building could have gone up in flames in DC and it would have been a better event.

Whiny article for sure, but the poor attendance in DC (only 12K for the final) is proof that he's right about DC being a bad idea. It was the lowest turnout for a Big 10 tournament in forever and the worst attendance of the Power 5 this year by a wide margin.

bac...On wednesday you could have sat anywhere you wanted for $6. Thursday night 25th row baseline behind RU bench I paid $40 at 545PM and at 630PM the fan next to me paid $20. On Friday we were gone, as was maryland.

I am not sure what i am going to do next year. I can pay decent $ and probably get OK seats guaranteed for the entire tournament in the primary market OR roll the dice in the secondary market with some control of where you sit and no control of pricing Day 3,4 and 5.

You have to ask yourself what fanbase is going to cause excess demand. No Villanova, Syracuse, etc.

i still think they sell out 17,000 strips if they go that route.

it will do way better in NYC...you get the casual businessman fan and there are way more alums here. DC not really a great idea. I think 1 in 5 years out in NYC, 2 in Chicago, 2 in Indy

And for teams in the Big Ten, the expansion doesn't really make a difference in regards to plane rides. For example, it is an 8 hour bus ride from U Minnesota to U Illinois; those volleyball players were flying anyway. It is a 3:10 plane ride from Minneapolis to Champaign (with a 45 min stop in Chicago, 1:06 if they fly charter), vs 2:40 to Newark.

I'm with you. Michigan vs Wisconsin final? MSU, Wiscy, Mich and Minny Semis NOT sold out? Are you kidding me? Zero question that MSG draws better for the same games:

Day 2 - 12,189
Day 3 (quarters) - 15,624
Day 3 (semis) - 13,984
Day 4 (final) - 12,902

We were invited for cable carriage fees. Before RU was in the BIG the network could only charge .05 for each customer with cable in NJ. With us in the BIG they can now charge, much, much more for all NJ cable companies. It had made the league millions.

is this for 2017 B1G...is this tickets sold or attendance?

Really just commenting on the atmosphere and my perception of how the show was being run...Not the results for RU on the court.

Even after that shelling at the American Tourney, and Memphis's early exit...The building was still fun to be at!

IMHO you'll see a very different crowd. These are B1G people for the most part who have either moved to NYC following their college days, or grew up in the region, and I think it'll be much "wilder" than what you've seen the last couple of years. Maybe not Big East level, for sure, but much more so than D.C. or somewhere in the midwest.

I do see the issue where teams will be sitting for almost 2 weeks.

Teams playing tomorrow are off since Saturday / Sunday if they were in a conference championship game. If they lost on Thursday it is a full week off.

Add a week to that for the earlier tourney and the champ will be off from a Sunday to the following Thursday / Friday (12-13 days). Those losing on Thursday / Friday are off for 2 full weeks.

Not sure if it would make sense to schedule an independent or OOC game from a conference that is done as well for a tune up to prevent rust. (MAAC ended on Mar 6 this year, Northeast was done on Mar 7) plus a number of non-area conferences finished early.

Given that the b1G season start date is moved up I don't see why a MD, MSU, UM, etc. wouldn't play a OOC game after the B1G tournament. At home of course.

Not true, there are many B1G sports fans in the NY metro area, more than you think. The correct response would be "The average NY metro sports fan is no more interested in Tulsa playing UCF in football or basketball" ... which was the other choice

Not us. Would be a worthless game unless we were going to NIT or NCAAs

Prior to the season when you are creating the OOC schedule you are not aware if you are NIT bound or not. I suggested NJIT since they are a local state school. We can easily schedule a Molloy type game too.

If we thought there was a high probability they would be the type of team.
