Unfortunately, fans appear more concerned with making sure their schools coaches are seen, as if that has any impact on landing the kids they are targeting....are we saying it's as simple as just showing up the most amount of times and not something else more realistic or tangible??
This goes back to the football recruiting argument as well.....fans are not interested in getting the right player, unless he's been battled for in recruiting against other schools, otherwise the kid must be terrible because bigger named schools didn't do their research or find out about the kid. We landed some kids and some are good and some are just OK (Goode, Laurent, Sanders etc.) and not all are going to be based on how many times a school shows up on the sidelines or is reported upon by a local blogger/reporter that is paid by clicks.....so if he mentions a certain schools coaches are there, it results in more clicks for that person's reporting, whether it's his webpage/blog etc....reporting that a bigger name school with a bigger name fan base, means more revenue.
On the other hand, the truth in basketball recruiting goes far beyond just appearing on the sidelines of a HS game.....certain kids are aligned with certain AAU outfits and that has 99% more to do with where a kids likely to go to college than anything else. But we can carry on about how critical it is to have coaches reportedly on the sidelines, because it gives the impression that "those coaches are working very hard".....or are the following the herd, so they aren't giving the impression that they aren't working.
Schools that pay the most behind the scenes get the kids into their programs. RU will eventually have revenue that can compete with the rest of the Power 5 programs. Let's get the revenue in the door and facilities up and running, but in the meantime, RU can get the kids just like every other program does.
