N.J. State Wrestling Championships HQ: LIVE VIDEO, brackets, results and coverage from Phillipsburg

Congrats to Joey O for winning his 3rd state title! He has elite D, but he took 1 shot while Hummel took 5 or 6, maybe more, which is concerning and has been for a while now. He needs to open it up when he gets here.

Joey always seems to shine on the big stage and has a knack of just doing enough to in close matches. Like you mentioned, he has incredible/elite defense and has been with the SKWC for a while so the coaches obviously know what he is capable of, so I trust they know how they can continue to develop him offensively...

His father runs Shore Thing. A lot of Rutgers wrestlers have come through that program. Ashnault, Theobold, Lewis, and Kiss to name a few. Family has a great relationship with both Ashnault and Goodale. Seems like a no brainer. I was pretty surprised when Vin committed elsewhere.

Going to the Naval Academy is much more than a wrestling decision, it's a life choice as well. Can't blame the kid for going there and being set up for a career in the armed services, plus getting to wrestle at an elite level.

He has good O when he wants to, but that hasn't been often enough, as he relies on his elite D a bit too much. College refs will call stalling more often if he doesn't open it up and it's harder to grind out those close matches.
LOL. That is a lot different than them offering a ton more money.
Not really. Kolat recruited him hard and a big part of the pitch and why he went there was $.

I don't recall Ashnault going through Shore Thing but could be wrong. Wasn't he mostly Apex?

I'm sure we're recruiting Santaniello and it wasn't too surprising his brother went elsewhere as they offered a ton more money from what I understand.
Shore Thing has him listed on their state champ page. He definitely went there for at least on year but he’s close with the Santaniello family regardless. He was rolling with Vin I believe this past summer during the covid restrictions.

Olivieri winning his third makes me wonder how many 3x NJ champ has there been??

Griffith, Molinaro, J Sebastian, Cagnina, Lawson, Francavilla.. hmm who else

There have been many. Off the top of my head, RU wrestlers - Ashnault, Suriano and Campolatanno each won 4. Donny Pritzlaff and Winston won 3.

I hope you are right about the staff's ability develop his offensive skills but hasn't that plagued several wrestlers during their career at RU? Thinking of guys like Grello and up to this point, Janzer.

Congrats to Brick state champs 3 straight weights
Have a chance to get a 4th overall with Szuba later. Quick internet search, I don’t believe a public school has had 4 champs in one year since 1948. I could be wrong though. Kind of interesting that Tallmadge ended up there from Brick Township but still, Southern has gotten away with that stuff for decades and they still never had 4 champs in a year.

High Point had 4 champs in 2011

Pascack hills and 5 state champs in ‘77 and 4 in ‘78 and that was with way less weight classes.

I believe the ‘78 team was ranked #1 in the country.
Pascack Hills had 3 champs in 77 along with Toms river South who had 3 champs. 78 Pascack had 1 champ

Fair point, but the common denominator there was those guys were upper weights and that's been the knock on the program for a while. Not being able to develop those guys, but at the lower weights we've obviously been very successful and he'll be joining a loaded room with Rivera, Alvarez, Aragona, Raimo, etc.. so I feel much more confident in that situation.

Dad and Goodale were roommates at Lock Haven

Weaver with tough match on Mat 3 against Hunter Mays of Howell. Soldano will be on mat 2

Mays beats Weaver 9-4. Mays is a PA transfer and a big-time recruit as a junior. He is unbeaten this year. Last year, he was 41-2 with his only losses in the PA state tourney.

Weaver has not progressed that much since his sophomore year. I believe he will struggle at the D1 level.

Yeah, it's not looking very prosmising for Weaver unfortunately. Essentially ever since he left BC, it's been nothing but downhill for him. Maybe with the proper coaching, training, etc he can rebound but at this point it's pretty bleak.

Agreed. I know Mays is legit and this was his closest match this year, but he was getting to Weaver's legs at will. I hope we are recruiting Mays as he would look nice at 165.

Soldano with a 3-0 win. If there was ride time he would have had around 4 mins. He rode out his opponnet the entire 2nd but the kid made it tough and Soldano could never get in a good enough position to turn him. Got an escape and then a quick TD in the 3rd, but once again couldn't ever get the turn.

O'Donnell wins 3-1 to advance to the semis. He is just a huge young man. When he was on bottom, it looked like the other guy was trying to move a cement truck.

Pascack had 3 champs in 77. Only 12 weight classes but there were also way less schools (some of which didn’t even have wrestling) than there are today
