Never had great expectations

Some are beginning to consider the possibility that Pike cannot get the job done and that maybe he isn't the right guy. Well, I think serious calls for his dismissal are uncalled for and way premature, I think that people's expectations have been unrealistically high. Understandable, given the long suffering of desperate fans in men's basketball and football, but still unrealistic. I would like to hear about concerns I posted last June, shortly after Eugene Omoruyi transferred out, to see if that earlier assessment has proven to be accurate after 9 games, in the sense that we cannot increase win totals and overall success very much under these circumstances.

In the post last summer, I expressed a number of concerns that were apparent to me. Truly, I possess no particularly great basketball knowledge. It's just that it was so glaringly obvious to me. RU would be less talented and tough, and much thinner, in the frontcourt, while being overloaded with backcourt players who could play the 1, 2 and/or wing position. The latter situation would require an adjustment to the team's style of play, with a smaller and more mobile lineup and more transition play. The difficulty would be in figuring out individual roles, lineups and rotations among that large group of outside players. Indeed, I think that this is exactly what the team and coaching staff are struggling with to this point in the season.

To me, the loss of Omoruyi was immense. Excellent rebounder who could score at the rim, be tough in the paint on defense, and provide leadership. Nobody could take a charge like this guy! People rationalized that we would be OK, but they were wrong. We are less capable and dangerously thin up front. Meanwhile, the roles/lineups/rotations issue is far from being settled. Add to that the fact that we are a mediocre foul shooting team and are downright awful at three point shooting, a big deficiency in today's game. I did not make the post highly negative to avoid adding gloom and doom to other's hopeful thoughts about the future, but in my own mind, I didn't expect more than 12 or 13 victories for the season, and probably fewer wins in the B1G. Maybe this is too pessimistic, because the season is still young as is the team. But that's the way I see it. We will keep scores closer, but not pull out a lot of wins. Wonder what others think?

Rutgers is 33rd in the country in 2-point field goal percentage, top-50 in offensive rebounding, and top-100 in defensive rebounding. We're also top-100 in non-steal turnovers (Yeboah has drawn a lot of charges). We're doing the things Omoruyi was good at.

The problem was, is, and will continue to be outside shooting. The growing frustration with Pikiell reflects his inability to recruit players or design an offense that allows us to improve in this crucial area.

You are comparing weak schedule numbers ('19-'20) vs complete schedule numbers ('18-'19)

I guess you had tempered expectations but that was not my first thought. I thought we had a deep roster that was interchangeable and after the Spain trip thought Shaq Carter and Myles would handle the frontcourt with Ron and Akwasi playing the 4 at times . I saw Geo coming back as a junior ready to take that next step, from Honorable Mention all Big 10 guard to maybe sliding to the three team with all the graduations or guys leaving early , and a consistent 15-17 point scorer, with 5 assists per night and a solid defender. I thought the 4 sophomores, Montes, Caleb, Ron and Myles who all got better as their freshman year progressed, would continue to get better and take turns leading us in scoring game after game. I thought 3 of them played really good defense already. I expected Akwasi and Jacob and Paul to really help to add to our depth and I was anxious to see Paul become our best true point guard since Jeff Billet but could be brought along slowly as a freshman because we had other options for once . I thought we would shoot better both from the field, 2 pointers, and 3 pointers with5 capable guys, and at the foul line. I thought our length would cause a ton of deflections and block a ton of shots and be really disruptive on defense. I was very confident Coach would get our players to play hard every night that would give us a chance in every game .

I was concerned about the loss of Gene and his toughness and his 30 charges a year he took. I was concerned about our defensive rebounding with the loss of Shaq and Eugene and the ability to guard bigger centers with Myles’ propensity for getting in foul trouble. I was concerned with the rotations but knew the competition that we have not had before at every spot , especially at the 1,2,3 , would bring out the best in all of them.
We are only 9 games in , and all of my expectations have not yet occurred, but there is still time to happen. We have not yet clicked as I expected, but I do believe our shooting is going to improve and we are going to start winning some more games in the Big 10

Regarding expectations......we did not have anyone playing the same role as last year and a ton of new players. There were so many question marks coming in to the season.

Unfortunately all the concerns I had are still there.

I don’t think any one had “expectations” in the sense that anyone was seriously looking at their spring break schedules thinking about regionals locations ... BUT any diehard had HOPE that this season could have been the one, but after a disappointing 6-3 start (Id say 50% or more of the fan base had us at 7-2 minimum at this point), the usual season of late seems to be setting in. Have to do something to make this year different from last year or the year before but in a good improved way.

Rutgers fans are always optimistic. We function without the need of reality best.

Also I gotta figure we aren't really a 28% 3-point shooting team, regression to the mean ought to help there.

I think some people are going to start playing a bit better and we will win some Big Ten games. I don't think we will see a huge step forward from last year though.

Yeah, we seem like the 75-80th best team. Not bad but some computers had us top-65 or even top-50 entering the year.

Great reply, detailed and very candid.

After year 4 the expectations for 12 or 13 wins is comical. You should be ashamed. Expectations of .500 for this year is not asking much. If the class of juniors next year doesn't get over .500 then there are real problems
Well, I will be happily ashamed if we hit, say, 16 victories and exceed last year's 7 conference wins. One of my biggest concerns is the thin front court. What if, for example, Myles gets injured during the long season? the other is our dreadful 3 point shooting.

I think that with this team and this puny OOC schedule, they should at least be .500 this season. Anything less is a disappointment. Also, if the final scholarship does not bring in at least an approximate top 200 player to go with the other 3, I would consider it a lost class.

Once Gene left, expectations sank
In my OP, I neglected to mention Shaquille Doorson. Not a score or a dominant player, but he added defensive stature on the paint and some rebounding. Ended up being quietly valuable to last year's squad. But yes, Eugene was a huge loss. We could have had a more balanced team with him staying here.

I got sucked into the higher expectations for this year. I forgot how important Eugene was for this team. We look like we are missing something, and that's Eugene.

A lot of people don’t seem to think that’s the case. I’m in your camp.

Maybe it would make people feel better or look at it differently......the event that changed everything was Eugene's knee injury. The team misses a healthy Eugene, but they also miss Keith Hughes and Rashod Kent.

The issue is probably not Eugene leaving.

The difference is we've gone from overachieving to underachieving and now it's uncomfortable to watch

I find myself agreeing with a lot of these posts. I was wrong to think losing Eugene was not a big deal. But I guess we were not getting a healthy version on him this year either.

When we lose out on omoruyi and fill the 4th scholarship with a low-ranked player, I will be in the "boy who cried wolf" mode with coach going to visit top recruits. I am not gonna care because we are not gonna get any of them and we will settle for someone with weak offers. It feels like how I felt with ash and recruiting. I never paid attention because I had no faith he was getting legit talent to compete or to coach them up. I think pike can coach them up as much as he can but the talent gap is there in almost every big 10 game and it is disconcerting. The misses in the paint, at the free throw line and from 3pt is a hard brand of basketball to watch right now

Give me a Jerome Coleman. Give me a Ricky shields. They at least lit it up from downtown and blew the roof off the rac at times. This brand of basketball isn’t doing it
