I just watched V. Tech vs. Iowa State on Flo. Virginia Tech is loaded and crushed them 32-3. David McFadden looked great and beat the #7 ranked wrestler in the country. The key to his win was his ability to finish his shots. So smart for such a young wrestler and he doesn't waste energy or time in bad positions. Wish we had gotten him. Tech should qualify all 10 spots for NCAA's with six legit AA contenders (potential finalists at 125, 157, 174 and HWT) and 2-3 other outside shots to place as well. They recruit Jersey, Ohio and PA well plus they get whomever they want from powerhouse Christiansburg in VA. This gets me very excited for the future of RU wrestling as they are an up and coming non-traditional wrestling powerhouse school that can serve as a great model for what we can be. We are in a better conference in a better HS wrestling state. We are making small inroads into Ohio and PA and recruit Long Island, which has some studs, better. If we can create a pipeline from a few top Jersey HS programs like BC, Bosco, S. Plainfield, etc...we can contend every year. In addition we are equal or better academically depending on the field in a better job market. Across the board they have a more highly credentialed staff on paper but if we can continue to build the RTC/SKWC we can keep our great staff and still enhance the room. Pony up donors and let's get a new facility built.
BTW, lots of tough wrestlers have already taken losses this weekend. Darian Cruz, Mason Beckman and Laike Gardner all lost to lesser ranked guys against Bucknell. Returning AA B. Clagon from Rider got beat by a solid kid from CMU and Rob. Deutsch is 0-2, although one of those losses is to a strong wrestler, Jade Rauser of UVU, who beat Giraldo last year. Giraldo will get a chance for revenge in a few weeks. Should be a great season. Sorry for the novel.
