OC Wish List/ Suggestion Thread

The rumor on the New Hampshire Wildcats football board is Ryan Carty, the UNH OC, will
be getting a look from Rutgers.

what is RU going to pay to land this OC??..it has to be a good deal more then what they were paying Merhingher if they want someone proven.

Here's a few likely "Rule-outs"

(1.) a big name that would leave people saying "gee, why isn't he the HC?"
(2.) a big name that reeks of 'short term' - and is obviously 'just passing through'
(3.) anybody with a toxic reputation seeking a quiet place to rehab their identity
(4.) anybody that Ash has never met, and has never met anybody who knows him

Ash is still thoroughly immersed in the 'build this piece at a time from the bottom up - and to last for the long term' he is not at all going to go for a quick fix guy with any shaky past, any questions about 'alignment' or chemistry...

I've mentioned him in the past too but I just assumed he was going to stay on at IU since it was promotion from within. If he's available I like him as a choice as well. I'm not sure why Tom Allen would go in a different direction though. Has that been written anywhere?
If he is wondering about his fate, maybe the time to strike is now. . . . .

Every player on the team was recruited by Wilson. This includes first-year Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow and the rest of the IU offense, which Allen — a defensive-minded coach — said he’s not touching until after the bowl.

He will limit the coaching changes until after the bowl game.

Quality control contributor Shawn Watson — who coached former Louisville quarterback and current Minnesota Viking Teddy Bridgewater — is now quarterbacks coach.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Johns also coached the quarterbacks and wide receivers while Wilson was coaching in addition to swapping play-calling duties with the head coach by quarter. Watson’s promotion takes some pressure off Johns while he calls all the offense’s plays, Allen said.

Joe Moglia, and make him associate head coach. He could combine his "perimeter attack offense" with the power spread. You won't even need to pay him.

Anyone thinking a big name is coming needs to just relax a bit. I would love for RU to spend big bucks but it's not happening, right now. Figure $400 to $500, maybe maybe stretching to $600. Look for a young guy as there aren't too many power spread guys in that price range with experience.

So, NJ.com has a slideshow list, :
1. Darell Hazell- on my list
2. Jerry Kill? WTF?
3. Brett Elliot, Texas State OC
4. Luke Wells, Utah State
5. Barney Cotton, UNLV OC, formerly Nebraska OC in 2003, overlapped with Ash at Iowa State
6. Todd Fitch - On my list
7. Matt Canada- look out @Panthergrowl13 --Canada and Doeren know each other
8. Phil Longo- also on my list--go for this!
9. Glenn Thomas- Rhule's OC, seven years as Falcons QB coach
10. Travis Trickett- FAU's OC under Charlie Partridge
11. Ryan Carty- UNH OC
12. G.A. Mangus- SC State OC
13. Zach Azzanni- Tennessee WR's coach and passing game coordinator
14. Thomas Hammock- Ravens RB coach. worked with Ash at Wisconsin
15. DelVaughn ALexander--Arizona State WR coach
16. Ralph Friedgen- they call this a longshot

LOL Knight!!!!

If Pitt doesn't lose Matt Canada to LSU, we won't lose him to Rutgers.

Besides Canada does not run a power spread offense.

He just runs an offense that scores a lot of points (42.4 ppg).:sunglasses:

Whoever, Ash brings in as your new OC should have much more experience than Drew had (IMO).

If Canada was your OC this year I think Rutgers would have won 5 or 6 games with your talent.
He would have more effectively utilized your level of talent to score points (ex. senior laden OL).

Let see who Ash hires.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

We don't like that many points here. So Canada is not for us.

I forgot about Shawn Watson. While he didn't have a power spread at NU he does do a lot of the same things or he did before he was let go by NU. He has been kind of a nomad and has been everything from a head coach to a desk jockey. Him and Bill Busch know each other from their Nebraska days under Callahan. Watson was one of 2 holdovers from Callahan's staff to Pelini's to make a smoother transition. He was let go then mainly because Bo is a douche bag and wanted to make sure his staff was all of his cronies. He certainly wasn't afraid to try and spread the ball around and use what talent the had. He was the QB coch for Zac Taylor, the Cincinnati OC who will be looking for a job. He did a great job with him not from a running stand point but on reading defenses and going through progressions. Taylor wasn't very talented at all and did not have a very strong arm but he knew how to make things go. Watson would fit in the category of always looking for the bigger and better deal though.

I may be mistaken, but I am getting the impression you are not a fan of Pelini. Funny how you latched onto Watson, and my intent was not to suggest him as OC, but instead, Indiana's current OC. Wonder if Wilson called the plays or if Kevin Johns did the play calling.

Is there any hint as to whether Ash already has a 'short list' & is in to phone interviews?

or is he just now sitting down and Googling "Power Spread Offensive Coordinators with prior experience"? (highly doubt it)

If I got my wish about what happened to Bo then I would probably be trying to determine what my cellmate was like.

His name just was one that I had forgotten what he was up too. He wasn't that bad a coach when he was let go, Bo just wanted total control and Watson wanted to run the offense, plus he wasn't one of Bo's boys so he never really fit in with them.

I'm pretty sure Wilson called the plays. I think Johns was the OC in title only. I know there was some unrest at IU early this year because of the lack of offense compared to years past. I think there was a lot of finger pointing instead of thumbs.

Who are the candidates that Ash knows already and has coached with before? I think anyone else is going to be weary of taking the job.

This will be what the 8th OC in the last 8 years for RU.

Thanks Knight, haven't had time to post.

I don't have any inside info. But if you are the head coach, do you want a guy on the staff that competed with you for the position but lost out even though you can argue did a better job? So that people, particularly boosters, can second guess why you have the top spot?

Wait, maybe its in one of the articles I linked, but Carty was being considered for the HC job at Rutgers when Ash was hired?

Even so, this is a chance for Carty to prove himself and take a step up to P5 and possibly a HC gig in a non-P5 or even a P5 school, if he succeeds. If not, he can just go back to FCS, no harm, no foul.

Nope the other way around. Johns was being considered for the Indiana spot that was given to Allen.

Edit, sorry quoted the wrong post from you.

Oh, you had quoted my Carty post, and I got confused, but it does not take much for that to happen.

Good point on Johns. We shall see.

But someone said that Johns did not call the plays (Kevin Wilson did). That would give me pause.

He's called plays but Wilson at one point took over but still collaborated with Johns. Their previous co-OC with Johns, Sean Littrell, went to UNC and their offense has done well with him and Fedora as HC.

At this point, you and I should march into Ash's office with this thread and give him a short list! I enjoy going back and forth with you and others. I see a couple of things that will not make everyone happy.

1. We must hire someone who has P5 OC experience--are we going to flip a current one to us? Maybe Johns. Maybe we get Cincy or Oregon's. But I would not make this a prerequisite.
2. Get a G5 head coach to come over as our OC. Doubt that.
3. Don't hire someone like Carty for someone from the FCS. Disagree with this. Would give Longo and Carty long looks if I was Ash.

Where shall I pick you up before we head over to the Hale Center?

Haha, this time of year is always fun for me whether we're looking or not. I always like putting on my pretend AD cap or in this case HC cap I suppose.

There are a few names I like with the top being Werner, Lubick and Johns I suppose if he was actually looking to leave IU. But if you've seen my posting I'm not one to narrow down the field so I'd be fine with Longo, Carty or whomever from wherever if they have some good experience cranking out strong offenses or have spent a good amount of time working under successful offensive coaches.

So, since you declined my invite, I'll go it alone. In the meantime, we can start a Fantasy AD league.

That sounds up my alley.

Looks like you got a partner out west to go along, not too far out of the way. Fan from a big name program too might give you some gravitas when you march in to Ash's office.

and who the hell cares what the papers have to write about Wilson? Lets run our program how we want, not how our enemies want.
I don't care what the papers write but I do care about what he did to get fired. Since it wasn't based on the performance of the team and Indiana seems to want to keep it hush hush, that leads me to believe it is pretty bad. Rumors are already out there that he pushed injured kids to play and was somewhat abusive of his players. Given our recent history with Mike Rice, this is the last guy we should be looking at despite the fact that he's a great offensive coach.

When an institution directs legal counsel to conduct an investigation (actually it has been said 2X) and the institution President references said investigation as the central issue that initiated the 'dialog' with the coach - and that then resulted in the coach electing to go on record as suddenly 'resigning' .... yeah ... the guy is toxic ... do not bring him here ... do not call him up ... this is not one where anybody would want to say "I stake my reputation on this guy"

Hobbs make a rockstar play to get Paul Petrino.

Only makes $400k/yr as HC for Idaho, and they're going back to FCS in 2018.

I like this one. Literally if you can win in Moscow, Idaho you can win anywhere. He's got them at 8-4 this year which is impressive given Idaho as mentioned, is moving down a level in football.

Exactly. It is too taxing to have to stand up and cheer after every score. The booze can make you dizzy. DM actually did the fans a favor with his offense.
Game Day Experience Observations:
"Too many Touchdowns scored. The constant shooting of the cannon hurt my ears. My legs are tired from standing and my throat hurts from cheering so much."
