From what I understand, that is not the offense Ash wants to run? @gef21 , can you chime in, or are you trying to get an interview?

I think a good offensive mind can adapt if he's willing... that I don't know. While not a power spread he is willing to run it more than your typical air raid offense and what you'd expect from Leach. Even Baylor's offense ran the ball at times more than you might think on first blush sometimes top 10-15 in rushing. They still obviously chuck it around a lot but not all of them are devoid of a run game.

A few snippets from those articles with respect to running the ball although not what you'd consider a power spread.

We are an Air Raid offense - we run the ball a little more than Texas Tech does, but don’t pass as much as Mike Leach’s version. Our system is designed to create space. If a team loads the box with seven defenders, we will run to the perimeter, but if they leave 5 in the box, we’ll run inside.

At the end of the day, the space of a football field is constant. There’s always space to be had, and there’s always space to attack.

We do run some RPOs, but our run game is simple. We run power, inside zone, and stretch on the perimeter. The bubble screen is a huge part of our game.

Question: Sam Houston threw the ball for more than 3,200 yards last year and rushed for more than 3,800 yards.
Are you pleased with the balance your offense showed in 2014?

Longo:
We were happy with our production but we don’t measure balance in terms of pass versus run yardage. Balance in our offense is measure by how well we distribute the football to all of our weapons. We want everyone involved and we want everyone to be a factor.

Question: Does you philosophy focus on building an offense around the personnel or the system?

Longo: The offense is the offense. Throw it 70 times, run it 70 times, it doesn’t really matter to me. We always take what the defense gives us. The offense is diverse and flexible. It gives us the ability to cater what we do to the strengths of the current players. The emphasis we have within the system will always be dictated by two things – our personnel and the weaknesses of the opponent.

Hazell at the top of NJ.com's list? Yeah, see right there, that's why they're a freakin' joke lol!

And they appropriately punctuated their list with Ralph Friedgen, in their words a 'long shot' (or mine, a 'no shot but that joke of a publication threw him on the list because someone on ScarletNation mentioned him and it added a slide to the useless slideshow').

Hazell was on my list too :flushed:, but after thinking it over some more and reading that article somebody posted, he's off my list. At least NJ.com did not have our former HC and one time co-OC on the list. Surprised they did not put on the Cubits, who are not employed as coaches as far as I know. That would go over real swell.

Something tells me this will be a big hire. Ash is a smart guy - knows the fan base was unhappy with Mehringer - he's going to go with a proven guy to save his own @ss.
I think you're right . And I think Hobbes , after seeing what a strong coaching support group has done for basketball, would be willing to pay a little extra to get someone good. It would also calm the fan base and more importantly reassure prospective recruits , especially on offense. It will have to be someone who has proven himself in developing an offense and managing game time adjustments when calling plays.

I got cold waiting so I came inside. I guess you aren't coming to get me.....:(

Just crossed through DesMoines. I picked up the Pelini bros in Youngstown to make the ride more entertaining. You want to ride shotgun, or sit in the back with Bo?

Cool, I will let you ask Bo about this:
http://www.vindy.com/news/2016/dec/12/sources-some-ysu-football-players-face-suspension-/?mobile

Doesn't sound like this is sitting to well with Bo. He wanted this kept quiet till after the playoffs then he could sweep it under the rug. Now his hands will be tied and have to suspend them.

An offensive coordinator from the past, Kirk Ciarrocca, the current OC for Pj Fleck Western Michigan.

I don't really think so but it looks like he is successful.

haha I wish I was qualified for that job and could apply. I would hate to see what people wrote about me on the board though. Would be fun to call some people out in a press conference though.

So the difference between the how they run their offense and what we tried to do this year is how we incorporated the run game. He was very deliberate with his run calls. If you look at his literature they run power, stretch, draw etc. We ran read. Ash seems to want the direction to have us be a spread read option team. Option with the back, option with the slot, and most importantly option with the QB.

In all honesty I can not compare what our goals in the passing game last year, to the air raid offense, because I do not know what our goals in the passing game were last year.

I like some of the concepts he uses. He likes to stretch the field vertically and likes to attack the middle of the field. They also use the threat of bubble to pull DBs up.

I think some of these concepts fit to what Ash wants to do but does not seem to include any read plays.

But any OC worth the pay and who wanted the job would adapt, right?

I think it depends on the OC. If someone is a pro set guy he probably would not come in and apply for the job. I don't think we want a coach who is not experienced running this to come in and try something new.

I think an air raid guy could be comfortable adding read concepts in BUT implementing and teaching those concepts are a significant part of practice time. That changes a lot of what they are already comfortable with.

Part of the reason we lost many OCs under Schiano is because he micromanaged them. I am happy that Ash has a vision but he has to trust his coordinators to run their system and be successful.

The most successful teams I have coached on the HC was a facilitator and allowed the coordinators to do their jobs.

So, as I understand Longo's system, as he described it, the QB has less to think about (fewer or no reads?). Maybe a power spread with a read option would not be what Longo wants to do, and perhaps he would not be the right person for the job? Guess that depends on his flexibility and what he is comfortable implementing, which may depend on his assessment of the personnel he has.

By power spread, Ash wants to primarily run between the tackles with the RB.

The option and read game would compliment.

If your team runs read or option as your primary attack, it lets the defense dictate the attack (i.e.: sell out on the RB -- let the QB run where at least we can get some hits on him).

Further, as defenses got more sophisticated to deal with the zone read (i.e.: scrape exchange etc.), that play's effectiveness has been reduced.

Finally, almost every team all the way down to HS runs zone read and option elements now. Coaches AND players have experience handling them.

Long story short, Ash wants to spread the field to create one on ones on the perimeter and take defenders away from the box so he can run up the gut with a power back.

He wants a QB with an arm to play-action off that look but with a build and speed to handle the occasional zone or option to offer enough variety on first down.

Really appreciate the simplified explanations you and @gef21 provide on this board. Armed with the knowledge you have given me, I am going to apply for the open position that Rutgers just advertised. I'll give you a 10% cut of my first year salary if I get the job.

Id take that deal.

I think I would need you or someone else in the upper stands to give me directions through my headset. That would be extra pay.

The eye in the sky is the most important person (unless the coordinator is in the box). Without them you can not make any adjustments or really know what is happening.

I submit...Meet Phil Longo, the coach behind college football's most prolific offense.

The road to becoming the most prolific offense in Division I football began in an old Toyota 4Runner. The journey started in Parsippany, New Jersey, and kicked into high gear some 700 miles down I-64 W.

The branches of the Air-Raid offensive tree have stretched throughout the Big 12 and into the Pac-12, but it’s the one tearing up FCS football in Huntsville, Texas, that is the most intriguing going right now -- the one that leads all of FCS in, among other categories, yards per play (7.79); total yards (592); and touchdowns (60), which is almost 10 more than any FBS team has. And unlike most Air-Raid attacks, this one isn’t just tearing defenses up with the passing game, but also on the ground as well.

Phil Longo is sounding better and better. Hope Coach Ash gives him an interview even though he's never known him or worked with him.

so far it looks like Ash only hires persons who he coached with at prior stops,or he knows from OSU referals.

Phil Longo sounds great. But being Rutgers fans we know he won't even get an interview. Longo will be the Hayden Rettig, P.J. Walker, Tom Savage version of our offensive coordinator.

Seems to be OK for Ole Miss and maybe Pitt, why not RU?
C'mon Chris, Phil. Just do it!!!
PHIL LONGO COME HOME!!!!!
