OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

He will never have another season approaching the one where he was able to parlay the shift into a batting title. Really missing Alvarez because your lineup is really weak with a slap hitter in the 6 hole.
Five years ago McNeil hit 23 homers, batted .318 with a .916 OPS. What happened to that guy, we may never know. Seems like he wasn't sure, or maybe the Mets weren't sure, if he was to be a high average hitter or a power hitter. Not sure what tinkering they did with his swing, but now he is neither.

McNeil, Alonso, Lindor have all trended down. These 3 and Nimmo are 4 constants.

Nimmo's BA has stayed relatively constant, but his OBP is down, however is OPS is up.

The problem with this team is that they are playing fundamentally unsound baseball. Wether it is swinging at pitches out of the strike zone, taking strikes on hitters count or missing the one to two pitches that most hitters get in every at bat, the hitters just aren’t getting it done. It’s one thing if these were young hitters but the top 6 in this lineup are all experienced veterans getting paid a lot of money and on long contracts save for Alonso and JD Martinez.

Starting pitching will revert to norm at some point. The announcers today kept bringing up how the pitchers aren’t doing a good job of holding runners closer to base - more fundamentally unsound baseball. Fielding is terrible as well. Ottavino didn’t cover first base yesterday which led to 2 runs. Lot of times pitchers are up in count and then walk hitters. Walking hitters is a huge problem to begin with but worse in key situations. If this keeps up I don’t see this team winning more than 65-70 games this year.

Mendoza is way in over his head and is not much better than Callaway, Rojas. He really makes me realize that we should have overpaid to get Counsell.

We should be looking to trade Alonso, Marte, Nimmo, McNeill. We should trade Lindor although he has zero value. JD Martinez will be traded soon. Vientos can’t be that much worse that these guys.

Nick Morabito and Christopher Suero were promoted to Brooklyn after the game yesterday.

Some starts from the weekend that I missed. Blade Tidwell and Sproat are pumping this year. They have the biggest upside of any SP in the system with Scott as well. McClean is the 2 way so I wonder when they move him to SP full time. He has big power as a hitter but strikes out way too much. Maybe after this season.

Blade Tidwell RHP (AA Binghamton) - 8.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 0 HR, 1.23, W(2-3)
Brandon Sproat RHP (High A Brooklyn) - 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 0 HR, 0.92, W(2-0)
Nolan McLean RHP/DH (High A Brooklyn) - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 0 HR, 2.84, W(2-1)

McNeil and his .308 slugging pct needs to go. He’s become a weak little slap hitter with no speed and has a hard time making contact anymore.

Alonso being rested tonight. Stewart playing 1B.
From the Athletic. The writer was formerly SR. VP and GM of the Reds and Nationals.

1. Mets trade 1B Pete Alonso to Mariners for RHP Emerson Hancock and 1B Ty France

Alonso will be a free agent after this season and there is no indication the Mets are going to extend him long term before he reaches free agency. Therefore, if they aren’t in the wild-card race come late July, they should trade Alonso and try to re-sign him in the offseason. He loves New York and loves being a Met, so they’d have a legitimate chance to sign him in the winter. In the meantime, by parting with Alonso before the trade deadline, they could get back a promising young pitcher in Hancock, the sixth overall player taken in the 2020 draft, who debuted last year and this year has logged a 4.75 ERA over six starts. Hancock, 24, has given up two runs or fewer in each of his past four starts. France, who will turn 30 this season, also comes back in the deal to New York. He could play first base for the Mets the rest of this season, and with his experience at third, second and DH, gives them a multi-position player and a potential offseason trade chip (particularly if they re-sign Alonso). To me, his swing and approach say he should be much better than his production — .250/.337/.336 slash line and a 99 OPS+ last year and a 97 OPS+ this year — so maybe a change of scenery would help him. France is under team control through next season.

The Mariners, on the other side of this deal, would fill their biggest need, landing a big middle-of-the-order power bat to give them a much better chance of winning the AL West and even running the table in October. Seattle could replace Hancock in the rotation with Bryan Woo and still have the best five-man rotation in baseball. Woo, who logged 4.21 ERA over 18 starts last year as a rookie, is on the injured list but reportedly nearing a return.

When you start looking closer at the bats in the Mets system, including Acuna who hasn't had an OPS above .800 except years ago in rookie ball, you can easily conclude that the system still needs upgrading.

Wondering what the meaning of the post below was? Was it also about the hitting, which has been bad.
That being said, looking at team stats on ESPN, the Mets are in the middle 15-18 in Runs, RBI, BA, OBP, SLG and OPS. Pitching- near the top. But yet, Mets and 2nd from last in the NL East.

The board always, always flexes back to this.

So is it batting with runners in scoring position?

I know our abysmal in game numbers have been noted on the few games I've listened to this year.

I guess runs suggest it's not, but maybe it's indicative of producing in important situations?

FCL season started this past weekend. We have a lot of intriguing players this year. I only have Rodriguez listed for now since he's in the top 30 Pipeline list but I will add more as we go. That Pham trade appears to be a real winner from Eppler.

Kevin Parada is starting to look like a massive bust. It's still early in the season but he's got to start to show something. His bat was supposed to be his carrying tool.

Jett Williams should be back end of May. Gilbert should be end of May or early June.

Nice bounceback thus far after a lost weekend in Tampa. Each of those losses was excruciating in their own way. Myself and about 15,000 other Met fans (including the 7 Line Army) were there on Sat for Scott's debut.

Need a bounceback from Quintana this afternoon to hopefully complete the sweep. 7 straight vs. ATL/PHI loom ahead after tomorrow's off day.

hope they get the game in but McNeil sitting reminds me a few years back that whenever a slumping player got 2-3 hits, we sat him the very next day...

The Cardinals have to travel too, albeit not as far. They will be in Chicago, fly home to St. Louis, thence to Tampa Bay.

My guess is that they was no available date that worked well for both teams. The league didn't want a date where one team had to travel and the other did not. The only fair thing was to pick a date that inconvenienced both.

You know how y'all (and y'all know who you are) predicted how Luis Guillorme would immediately become the Braves newest Met-killer? Because that is part of the manifest destiny of Met fandom?

Not happening. As a Brave, Guillorme's sole impact on the Mets this year was to inflate Tyrone Taylor's slugging percentage. He won't have a chance to do any further damage. He and his .150 BA was just traded to the Angels, for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

As an Angel, he will get a chance to break our hearts in early August. But maybe it won't hurt quite as much.

Oh no! The Braves have replaced Guillorme with another future Met killer. None other than Zack Short, who had been DFA'd first by the Mets, and then by the Red Sox.

Love watching Scott pitch. He is old school. “Don’t tell me what to throw to the hitters. Let them chase my best stuff”. We have also needed an innings eater. 2 innings 20 pitchers!

So tired of watching this lifeless listless offense. Want to watch Scott pitch because I know he's one of the future cornerstones so I hesitate to turn it odd but damn they are showing me nothing. Paul Skenes is making his debut today and the Pirates have provided him with 6 runs of support. Our kid has to damn near throw a perfect game.

I believe only Nimmo, Alonso and Tyrone Taylor have an OPS over .700. Nimmo and Alonso are not having good seasons regardless and Taylor is a reserve. Absolutely pathetic lineup.

It's even worse than
Usual because I didn't even realize it until the lead announcer pointed out that they don't even have a damn hit. Everytime they show a shot of the stands the fans look bored as hell. As soon as Scott is out I'm also out. I'll watch either the NBA playoff game or even the UFL game.

Every Mets fan on earth knew the Mets needed to improve their lineup. Management didn’t do anything and were left with this slop of a lineup that can’t hit worth of a damn

Never seen a team of such undisciplined hitters. Terrible even in batters counts. Marte waves at a slider way down out of the zone on 2-0, can't handle a fastball to get to 2 strikes and then flails at the same slider with 2 strikes.
