OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

Thing is, Nimmo and Lindor are both typically much better then this. Yes Lindor has some slow starts to his record, but not this bad, and never has he looked this bad over an entire season. So what we are seeing now is outlier stuff from them. Not 2022.

Question imo is why are so many players under performing thus far? Is it a philosophy shift towards being more aggressive? Is it simply contagious non hitting?
It is an interesting question as almost everyone is have a horrible season. Yet, Met hitters are still in the upper half of MLB in getting walks and lower half for K’s…
The crazy thing is a guy like McNeil. And I don’t think it is about the shift. He has gone from a guy that could do whatever he wanted with the bat to just a bad hitter.

Good article in The Athletic on Diaz' issues. Sorry, it's paywalled, but this graphic seems to capture a big part of the problem.

"Here’s Díaz’s year-by-year percentage of sliders in the “heart” of the plate charted in front of the opponents’ weighted on-base average against those sliders:"

0519-Diaz-Sliders.png

A ray of light?

"The good news is, well, Díaz has been here before. He’s battled back from an even larger obstacle in 2019, when his slump lasted the entire season and came when he had little credibility with a new fan base. (He’s unlikely to be booed as vociferously now at Citi Field as he was that season; he may not even be booed at all.)"

If that were the only problem, but his velocity is down from 2022 significantly. About 2mph on both his fastball and slider. And it's obvious that his slider, setting aside location, doesn't have the same sharp break to it. I'd bet that he's also throwing a higher percentage of sliders. He's worried that his fastball is more hittable. There's a lot that off.

It’s hard to have a conversation when there are no words left !!!

Positive or negative outlook …we all can agree this fan base full of some of the biggest die hards doesn't deserve this

I’m glad they moved Lindor to lead off so they can utilize his .193 batting average even more.. This team is remarkably mismanaged

I am so grateful that Kelenic and Crow-Armstrong have been busts. Imagine if they were hitting like All-Stars?

Kelenic isn't a bust yet. Crow-Armstrong isn't anything yet - but he will NOT be a bust. His floor is Kevin Kiermeier.

Actually, you raise a very interesting question. What do we as a fan base deserve? Here's my $.02.

FROM THE PLAYERS: On the field, we deserve effort, mental sharpness, and team play. Off the field, we deserve preparation and work ethic. Are we getting it? I... guess so? I have no reason to believe otherwise.

FROM MANAGEMENT AND OWNERSHIP: We deserve an intelligent strategy, provision of adequate resources, and transparency/honesty. I think we are getting the first two. Probably not the last, but New York fans are notorious for their inability to handle the truth.

Maybe this is off base, but this team has a Chris Ash Era feel to it. Team is going out there, some players seem to be giving their all, but they can't put it all together. Watching every game feels like watching a Friday the 13th movie, where you are nearly assured the Mets will get killed an lose, especially with Diaz on the mound in the late innings.

All hope is not lost 😳

After Cleveland it’s the red hot giants , dodgers and the defending NL champs Arizona

21-27 could become 23-36 and the fire sale might start early

I hate the six man rotation. Hate it. One extra starter means one less reliever. Taking one reliever out of the bullpen when your starters are only going five, is simply unsustainable. How much rest does a five inning starter need anyway?

Also, your sixth starter is taking starts away from your one through five starters. And your sixth starter isn't as good as those other guys. If he were, he'd be one of them.

Kade Morris promoted to Brooklyn. Joel Diaz done with his rehab assignment in FCL and sent to STL. Willy Fanas promoted to STL.

Good day on farm yesterday especially for Tong and Sproat. Jeremy Rodriguez and Jesus Baez have super helium. These 2 are going to be top 100 overall guys if they continue this with Rodriguez starting to sneak into some of them already. Heck of a return for a half season of Pham. Eppler did great at the deadline last year but that's about it.

One would hope that when you have more rest between games, you can actually throw more innings when you do pitch.

I guess not though.
