OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

That was the game right there. Have to at minimum advance that runner.
Advancing base runners is not JD Martinez' game. He no doubt had one thought - barrel it up, and pump up Iglesias' music in the locker room. Yeah, I know that's two thoughts, but you get my point.

It didn't happen. C'est la vie.

BTW, I was very surprised that Houston pitched to JD. Was sure they'd walk him to set up the DP, and then take their chances with Alonso. Obviously they are smarter than me.

2 very bad losses today and yesterday.

Loss of Diaz and all bullpen injuries catching up to Mets

Terrible AB s by JD / Bader and Vientos in 10th inning today. Mets had their chance to win game and blew it

JD Martinez simply can’t strike out bottom 10 no outs runner on 2nd. He did. The Mets only got one run, A pitcher I’ve never heard of gets lit up top 11, Mets bullpen blows the series. Too bad
Martinez has been consistent, but has been in a slump the last 7 days.
Festa got pounded like a pinata at a Fiesta.
Diaz left the Mets in a sticky situation.

I'm not trying to kill JD here. I know he was very good this month until the last week. But I also know that he has shown a propensity for going well to to the right side. I didn't see the at-bat but was following it online because i had already left home. And it seemed like most of the pitches in the at-bat were sliders. Presumably on the other half. I don't know. But you're right. It happens. I'm just bummed they let the series get away after taking the 1st game handily.

Not that it mattered, but was anyone else surprised that the Mets intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez in the top of the 11th? I know he's a really good hitter. But I don't think the home team can ever put that second runner on. Ever.

Happy Bobby Bonilla Day to those who celebrate!

Which I most assuredly do. Because the Bonilla contract deferral was one of the best baseball decisions the Mets ever made. Financially, not so much.

If Mets become buyers could see Morabito as an interesting trade piece

Loss of Diaz and all bullpen injuries catching up to Mets

TBH I wouldn't call yesterday a bad loss. They nearly stole a game they had no business winning.

Saturday was a bad loss for sure.

Nimmo out, slipped and fell, hit his head.
I am old enough to remember that when the press reported an injury of this nature, you just knew it was a euphemism for "he was in a bar fight" or some such activity.

The mental image of Nimmo in a bar fight is somewhat amusing.

The Bobby Bonilla thread caused me to do some quick research on the 1993 Mets.
Generally, one of the markers of a good team is games decided by 4 or more runs.
It didn't work that time.
Those Mets were 26-20 in 4 run games despite going 59-103 on the season.
They went 33-83 in games decided by 3 or fewer runs.
Strange.

Every draft pick should be a pitcher every other draft
Buy your postion players
Mets are stuck with trash throwing 92mph
Guys come in afraid to throw strikes and we all see why. 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩

Why is everything a struggle for the bullpen?
Bob Dylan wrote a song with the answer:

How many leads must the bullpen blow
Before you call it a bullpen?
How many runs must Reed allow
Before he's pulled from the mound?
Yes, and how many times must the home runs fly
Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

It was said that Joe Louis once had a bum of the month club. Well as far as our bullpen goes it's the bum of the week club. Festa and this guy Jay are the bums of the week. Here today and gone tomorrow. But again; at some point you're gonna need to find some real solutions out there.

I have read the exact opposite theory. Develop position players and buy pitchers. Pitchers are far more volatile, and are much more of a roll of the dice, compared to position players.

Why is everything a struggle for the bullpen?
It seems that you didn’t hear that several relievers are out with injuries, some for the year, and the closer was suspended for 10 games. That might have had a negative effect on the bullpen’s performance.

Full slate of games yesterday as all teams are off Sunday this week. Still no updates on Reimer's return and he was supposed to be back in June. Gilbert probably looking at another couple of weeks.
