OT: 29 Years Ago Today (Monday) - the Blizzard of 1996

Nice recap . Like I posted , I remember this storm but I thought the winter of 1994 as being worse than 1996.
The 2010 storm was pretty bad and the cleanup was terribile in most parts of the state - from what I remember was that Christie was putting through public worker reforms so lots of snow plowing guys took the retirement, leaving many government entities short staffed and/or with inexperienced staff . As a result , I think a lot of roadways were missed !
What was the February 2024 storm ? Are you thinking of that big storm in 2021 ?

I believe 94 was the intense cold that flash freezed everything for weeks with ice ruts on major highways

For you and all the other folks posting about 93-94 it was indeed very snowy (51" in NB), but more importantly it was filled with an unprecedented number of significant ice storms, so I'd say it was probably more impactful, overall, than 95-96, which was the snowiest winter ever in NB at 76.5" (and in Newark/NYC with fairly similar amounts), because of all the ice storms.

Unfortunately (for me), I missed most of that winter as I was in Ireland for 90% of Dec/Jan/Feb for work and my wife was newly pregnant at that time and said the ice was just insane (I was home for one of the ice storms and it was nuts). But fortunately, my work paid for all services that I might normally do, such as snow/ice removal, so my wife didn't have to struggle with any of it.

If you want to relive some of those storms, that was the year after Ray Martin started summarizing every winter storm...

As great as the Blizzard of 96 was February 83 is still my favorite of all times
While Jan-96 was the most fun snowfall wise, Feb-83 was the most fun I ever had in a snowstorm. As I posted a few years ago, I didn't follow that one closely as I was a junior neck deep in thermo, PDEs and 2 women at that time, but that is still my favorite storm of all time as friends of mine were in the band that still played that night at the Busch pub which was still open as another friend was manager there and the staff were all on campus. There were snowball fights in the pub, people trying to sled outside on the small hill with 18+" on the ground and it still pouring down and lots of general debauchery as the pub didn't close until 3 am that night as the cops had more important things to do, lol. Wild wild night.

January 1987 was pretty nasty too. I was working at the RAC and even though employers staggered closing times, traffic was at a virtual standstill for hours. I almost ran out of gas.
Another favorite, lol. Took me an hour to travel from the eng'g building on Busch to our house on Orris Ave off Metlars, not more than a mile away, in the early afternoon when the storm was raging, as cars were barely moving and some were getting stuck and my roommate and I got out a few times to help people. So many horror stories as it seemed like everyone was let out at once - this was a few months before I met my wife and she said it took her 5 hours to go from TKR in Warren to Highland Park. I also remember going to the Melody that night with my roommates and being astounded at all the abandoned cars on Metlars and 18 - was also a fun night at the bar, as was usually the case on snow nights.

Yes, I remember that winter. I can remember shoveling snow/ice around my home about twice a week for many weeks. I believe there was about a 2 week stretch with something like 5 significant snowfalls that dumped between 4 - 10 inches of snow each time.
I just remembered I was driving an 8 cylinder rear wheel drive Mustang at the time. Luckily my wife was working in Denville at the time because the Mustang was un-drivable during the storms (and had to commute together). We ended up trading it in around February but I recall holding up the deal because the car was stuck in the snow at the time.

I remember the January '87 as well -- my senior year, had a morning class then nothing until the PM. Drove back home then the snow started falling and didn't go back for the night classes.

Was living in Troy NY in 1969 & Ironworking on Albany's south mall job. It began to snow on Dec 23 & dropped approx. 2 ft of snow. On Dec 25, Christmas Day it began to snow again & snowed for 3 more days, dropping another 2 1/2 feet. It was also 22 blow zero on Christmas Day, with up to 40mph wind gusts. With over 4 1/2 feet of snow on the ground needless to say everything ground to a halt. Albany shut down for several days. I didn't work for over a week. No workee, No payee.

Nothing moved. My Mother & Father were with us for Christmas & stayed for over a week. My dad & I went out to try to help get a stuck ambulance going--no luck. He & I would make our way to a gin mill that was open & have a few boilermakers every day.

It snowed some more over the next 10 days & by Jan 10 there was over 5 ft of snow on the ground. Talk about a winter!

2003 was insane as well, I recall NYC got around 3 ft and when it was melting you couldn't tell what was sidewalk and what was a quad high black puddle (which unfortunately happened to me).

I remember Rutgers students snowboarding behind their cars lol

Remember a major Saturday snowstorm my junior or senior year. Nowhere to go, nothing to do, so roommates and I pretty much drank the day away and played in the snow.

Tried car-towed snowboarding once snowfall tapered off in the evening. No rope to be found in a poorly supplied college rental so we threw the vacuum cleaner in the trunk and used the cord as a tow rope. We were working on compensating for the unexpected elastic stutter of the cord when NBPD police officer came from out of nowhere and put the kibosh on, about two minutes after we got out there. A rare occasion of getting a warning, not a ticket on campus.

Walked out to the bar a little while later, and another group of dudes was doing the same exact thing a block over. Rutgers producing great minds thinking alike : )

Martin, is that you? More details on the bolded stuff needed.

Most of my adult life I lived in coastal Toms River.
Normal snow events would give Jackson 4 to 6 inches and I would get nothing....rain or just a dusting.
But '96 we got two feet. Have many pictures as it was so unusual for us living next to Barnegat Bay.

I was living way off campus on Townsend street and ordered Chinese food delivery (we said we would order from a competitor if they didn’t deliver). Sure enough they delivered. The guy left his car on Livingston Ave and trudged through 2 feet of snow down Townsend street. I think we tipped him well 🤔

Winter of 93-94 was crazy because I recall it seemed to snow every 4 days from December to March. I was working in East Hanover at the time and the commute coming home on I-80 sucked. The new section of 287 had just opened as well and that was scary at times. I recall the 1996 storm but not many details.
We had some degree of snow cover in CNJ from January to late March. There were huge piles of snow in mall parking lots the entire winter! Buried shopping carts would appear sticking out of the piles after a warm day’s melt.

Man I remember 96 but I also remember 1978. I was a senior in HS, my brother was a freshman in college in Florida. Man I had to shovel that all by myself 😂

Was in Boston. 32" on top of 14" 10 days before. BC, BU and Harvard all closed. National Guard plowed a Fenway parking lot and flew to supplies and cases to Brigham & Womens, Beth Israel and St. E's hospitals by helicopter. Lots of CC skiers on the Green Line T tracks.

Was 1978 the year we had back to back 20+" storms about a week apart or so? I remember building a sled/luge run in the backyard since the snow went up so high.

I was a sophomore at RU in ‘78, we had about a 15 inch snowstorm (a surprise, it was suppose to turn to rain and didn’t) in late January. About 2 weeks later we got hammered by the big, intense coastal storm in February ( I think around the 12th or something). That dumped about 18-20 inches. Very windy. A famous storm up in New England. That storm was forecasted well in advance. They were predicting a big storm about 4-5 days in advance and it materialized.
