OT: 6 Notre Dame players arrested overnight.

Thank you DJ for posting this. I had an argument at the beach today with a women I didn't know, about RU football. she saw my hat asked me if any football players were beating up their girlfriends and dragging them around by the hair. I asked her if she knew what really happened with the whole Leonte "fight". She then went into the "riot" and I had to explain to her that only two players got charged a misdemeanor the other ones were not charged. I tried saying how disappointed I was but the school leaders cleaned house because that is not what Rutgers is about , even if most of the charges were dropped.

Of course she then went into the football program is bankrupting the school, I just walked away. Problem is some of our own fans do not know what really happened.
Again, that was a hallmark of Barchi, the RU administration and Julie: they had no clue about how to get out ahead of a story, so what the local media reported became the narrative that the public comes to accept as the truth. I share your frustration - I had the same issues late last fall with members of my tailgate crew: they knew only what had been reported on the front page at the time of the incidents; the later, more truthful reports were buried on the backpage.

And the football program bankrupting the school - it is so damn hard to break through that idiocy with people.

Indiana Law Gun Statutes - No Permit

First offense: class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both

Subsequent offense: class C felony, punishable by two to eight years imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000, or both

It is a misdemeanor charge there and the parking space assault caused a serious injury. The violence is committed by people as the resultant injuries are, not by inanimate objects. Violence is a people problem.
And driving around stoned with a loaded gun is equivalent to strolling through the park on a Sunday afternoon. Got it!

Different argument (and I agree they shouldn't be getting into fights) - my point was that being in possession of an unlicensed handgun is worse than getting in fight over a parking space.

May I disagree? I don't think people should walk around with unlicensed hand guns, but at least doing so doesn't involve violence or hurting someone. Same response to Spanky.

Sorry I don't care what the law says. I would be much more worried about my son who was caught by the Police with a handgun and drugs than if he was in a fist fight.

Wow. Just wow. NJ has some of the most miserable people in the world.

This will be Purple Face's excuse for underachieving this season. Hey, at least he didn't kill a kid this time.

I used to drive to high school with my 12 gauge shotgun in the rear window of the pickup truck hanging on the gun rack. There often would be the remnants of a 6 pack on the floorboard.

My how things have changed.

My response to an idiot who tries to enagage me in an argument is to look them in the eyes and simply say "You know what? You don't matter" then quietly walk away. It's possibly the biggest insult you can say to anyone.

Like him or not, Kelly is an excellent coach. That goes a long way. Butler will go to jail, they throw the book at ppl who try to fight the cops. He's not playing football again. The rest of them, up to Kelly what to do.

This is not good for ND but it's a far cry from what happened here last year. We saw one thing after another, Dailey charged with armed robbery in Florida, the parking spot rumble, the home invasion ring, Flood doing Barnwell's homework, Flood meeting the professor, it just went on and on and the cherry on that sundae was a godawful 4-8 season so bad it was in itself reason enough to clean house.

Shooting someone with an unlicensed handgun is worse than breaking someone's jaw over a parking spot.

Butler, the player who is accused of assaulting the cop, has been suspended indefinitely pending an investigation. Apparently there are conflicting stories between eye witnesses and the actual police report.

The 5 guys who were caught in car with pot and the gun. 4 are subject to internal discipline, likely 3-6 game suspension. The 5th, Max Redfield, the starting FS and former 5 star recruit, has been expelled from school. Apparently it was determined that it was he was the owner of the gun. The charge for the gun is apparently a misdemeanor in Indiana but ND has a policy against guns.

espn article states that some of the players were charged with possession of a handgun without a license., a misdemeanor in Indiana....in N.J.... mandatory jail time. and second degree felony.
Wonder if they use this in recruiting battles?

Excellent coaches don't kill students. Brian Kelly is 100% responsible for Declan Sullivan's death.

Let's see just what's done and the explanation given for what ND decides to do with Butler.
You are putting up a pretty good defense by implying the police might have it wrong.
Wonder what will come out of Butler's reportedly shoving a woman which seems to be the cause of his ( supposedly) tackling a police officer and hitting that police officer while they were on the ground.
Could those witnesses seen something else that will help Notre Dame reinstate him from suspension once the Notre Dame investigation of this incident is completed?

Just some background. ND has had issues in the past with the South Bend police harassing ND students and players in the past. Frankly, that seems to be what happens at a lot of colleges, where local authorities seem to have a jones for nailing the local college kids.

The police report paints a pretty bad picture and that's where the alleged woman being shoved came from. However, there were some eyewitness reports that claimed he was breaking up a fight outside a bar between his girlfriend and another girl. The girlfriend went nuts and beat up the other girl. When police arrived, they saw Butler involved and tackled him. According to one post on a ND message board from a student, the police didn't even question the girl who got beat up to get her side of the story. She apparently went for medical treatment and still was not contacted by the police.

It also turns out that the cop in question has a past history of excess force and reprimands from the police force.

So it's going to be interesting to see where this goes. It's quite possible the police are right and Butler went crazy. ND in its statement yesterday said that being charged with a felony is grounds for expulsion so if the charges stick and this is a felony, Butler is on shaky ground.

Another angle to this.............. Butler injured his foot and was in a walking boot last week and was likely going to miss a big chunk of the season anyway.

Let's be clear. When I say he's an excellent coach, I mean that he delivers results on the football field. That is all.
If you don't mind my asking, why do you think Kelly is personally responsible for Declan's death?

At least their coach wasn't going to the incognito to the Purdue library meeting a professor and pushing him to let his player have another shot as his homework
Well first of all, their coach can't go incognito anywhere in the state of Indiana. Second, he wouldn't have to meet with a professor. The professor would have realized the student is a football player and given him an instant A.

But that's the narrative from the Ledger and nj.com all season long. Hiw can you blame this woman? All she knows are the headlines she reads. Not everyone follows the story through to the end.

That's a huge stretch, Dawg. The investigation did not conclude that. And the parents did not sue. Very moving story on the family and how they handled it:

I 've worked construction most of my life and I read that report along with quotes from eye witnesses. Every school within a hundred miles called practice that day due to high winds .... all but ND. To make matters worse Kelly allowed that kid to go up in a scissor lift. He's as guilty as if he held a loaded gun to that kids head and pulled the trigger.

I hope you're only talking about the burglaries because the majority of the players were busted for getting in a fight over a parking spot if I recall correctly - which to me isn't even in the same ballpark as an unlicensed handgun.
unlicensed guns are SERIOUS... potentially more serious than knocking over some local drug dealer.. but in the same FELONY ballpark.
