While I missed the call, Sea Bright Fire Rescue, along with aid from Departments from Rumson, Little Silver, Monmouth Beach, Fair Haven and Middletown, rescued a cat in a structure fire last night. They performed CPR, used a special pet oxygen mask and revived the cat.

Early this morning, Stations 43 and 33 were dispatched to a town house in the Sea Bright Village for a reported structure fire. First in Chiefs confirmed fire on the second floor of the three story middle of the row. 43 Truck went in first due and stretched on the fire making a quick knock and keeping the fire to the floor of origin while Tower 33 went to work handing the first due truck company duties.

During the searches a member from Engine 42 (Rumson Fire) located a missing cat unresponsive in the third floor bedroom. Felix the cat was removed from the house and turned over to Firefighter Joe Eskridge and FF/EMT Dan Drogin who, utilizing the new pet O2 masks that were recently donated, performed numerous rounds of pet CPR which resulted in a successful resuscitation.

Our thanks goes out to the companies that responded on the general alarm:
Monmouth Beach Fire Company
Rumson Fire Department
Little Silver Fire Department
Community Fire Company
Fair Haven Fire Company

The fire is currently under investigation by the Sea Bright Fire Marshals Office.

We were talking about this earlier this morning. Pretty cool. Sure beats the hell out of styrofoam cups (which is what we used to stock in the rigs for pet re-perfusion).

Nice story.

In these small towns volunteers perform such a valuable service to the community. Truly appreciate all they do.

Yes. It is important to make them feel appreciated. Not many new folks signing up any more to volunteer. You have a great Fire Department and First Aid Squad in Manasquan.

That was a nice story. Cats everywhere thank you.

The styrofoam cup gets taped to an O2 line to become a makeshift non-rebreather. You don't need to do mouth-to-mouth because chest compressions take care of that for small animals - just set up a high flow of O2 and you're all set.

So yeah, we've all done this a time or two.

Agree 100 percent! I live in Hamilton, which is in the NJ top 10 population-wise (2010 data) and we have a volunteer fire department. All of us residents owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Lived in Hamilton for a year after I graduated Rutgers and volunteered for what was Mercerville Chemical Fire Company. Great Fire Department.

Still not buying it. You kissed more than one dog.
