I never saw people get hit like this. I knew people could be hit in water but thought it was the taller objects on land. I never took physics.

As a 5 year old(many, many years ago) I saw a surfer get hit by lightning at Point Pleasant Beach. His surfboard splintered and I am pretty sure he did not survive. He may have been the highest point because he was up on his board.

I've seen lightening hit the Hudson a lot. I've also read that boaters on water when lightening is around should lay low in the boat. Not sure how that works out in reality.

The last two years I was on the beach in Cape May and they kicked everybody off because of rain with a chance of lightning. They reopened in about a hour. Lifeguards take it seriously as they should.
Hope they are ok

It's the tallest object within the area that lightening has targeted which can be much smaller than the rain storm itself. Those unfortunate people were the tallest thing in that small targeted area of the beach.

Many years ago, 20+ maybe, a young man was struck and killed by lightning at LBI (I think). Storm was out at sea, visible from the beach, but far enough that every one thought they were out of danger.

My sister told me about that - I think it was in the Belmar area unless that was just a similar incident. Didn't appear to be any inclement weather around and then she heard a boom-crack out of nowhere. It turns out it was the lightning that struck a kid throwing a football around on the beach.

"...Positive lightning is the most dangerous of the two types. It is more dangerous and can be deadly if struck because it comes from the top of a thunderstorm. The cloud tops at the top are positively charged, and can strike as far as 25 miles away from the main thunderstorm where the ground is negatively charged..."

Was party boat fishing during the summer out of Atlantic Highlands a number of years back with my brother in law. We did half-day and headed back in around noon and a storm was coming in as well. Went to Bahrs Landing for lunch and made it there just before a really intense thunderstorm and someone was struck and killed by lighting on the beach in Sandy Hook during that storm.
