OT: Chapman to Yanks??!!

Oh wait.....Castro played in 38 more games than Walker. Is that a plus or a minus ? Does the fact that he didn't need replacement a good thing or a bad thing ?
And who was his replacement ?

Castro is 26.....Walker is 32.
Watch out when Starlin starts learning the strike zone a little better.
Castro has 4300 plate appearances in MLB he isn't going to learn to walk at this point.
Castro played in 38 more games and had basically the same in counting stats as Walker. TJ Rivera filled in for most of Walker's time off and did just fine. He hit .333, had 10 runs scored and drove in 16.

I don't have an axe to grind in this debate, but going into the coming season I would take Castro over Walker for two reasons. First, he's younger. Second, Walker is coming off surgery, and until proven otherwise, does it affect his performance both in the field and at bat?

As some coach I can't remember said: "If you can't play you're no use to me or the team."
There's something to be said for the fact that a guy is in the lineup every day...think Cal Ripken.
There's also something to be said for a guy who is out of the lineup every time his hammy hurts...especially if he's resting it on the golf course.
I don't know much about Walker's ailments, but I wouldn't count them as a plus.

Walker has been better than Castro for his career. Keep using old stats and embrace your ignorance.

Walker's a better fielder, too.

Castro is actually rated as a much better 2nd Baseman than Walker if you bothered to review the Defensive Advanced stats by the position they play rather than overall. Walker is rated a -5 (below average) in Defensive Run Total at 2B....while Castro is rated as a 9 (above average) at 2B.

In terms of OPS - the major difference between the two players last year was that Walker had approximately 20 more walks which increased his on-base percentage. Are 20 Walks worth an extra $9 million a year? Personally I would take a 5 year younger Castro who fields the position better at an average contract value of $8 Million over Walker at $17.2 Million with a recurring back injury.

What's laughable about this thread is that Mets fans are citing the length and money of an ace reliever contract as a cause for concern for the Yankees......a team with an abundance of money. This was a good move. You move one of the best Closers for key prospects at the trade deadline in a transition year where the team was going no-where....then you bring him back for just the extra salary after the season and in a year where FA Starting pitching options are thin. So a team with the highest revenue stream ended up with an Ace Closer and a bunch of young talent to either develop or trade.

With Jensen getting 5 years 80 million that makes the Yankee deal look even better. Chapman to me is much better and has a better chance of being good for longer.

Trust me, the mets fans bitching in this thread about how much the Yanks are paying Chapman would not be doing any bitching if the mets somehow found the resources to sign one of the top players in the league for that kind of cash.

Going off baseball-reference Walker is 0 on defensive saved on avg, Castro is -8.

I already said that the Chapman deal is a good one for the Yankees and trading him for a top prospect and resigning him is a great for them.

43 points in slugging + 47 points in on base = better offensive player.

For their careers (at 2B).....Defensive Runs Saved above average:

Walker: -10
Castro: - 6

Yes - through 2016 season, Walker is a statistically better hitter in terms of OPS and Slugging. However, in regards to Walker vs. Castro I look at is as all things considered including performance, salary, age, relative health.....who would you rather have on your team?

To clarify, I wasn't trying to single you out in terms of the Chapman Trade. Just didn't feel like creating another post to point out the Mets fans trolling this thread.

For this year Walker. 2018 and on we'll see. Castro played 188 games at 2nd, Walker is at 913 remember that when considering a counting stat.
