OT: Electric vehicles

You get electricity for free? Inform a non-electrician, how many watts are used in that 1 hour to get 4-5 miles? And if I use the midpoint on the 240V conversion and $3 per gallon gas it costs 7000 miles of my cars range to make the conversion.
Ok. Sounds great.
We could factor in the reduced maintenance costs of an EV too.
We could factor in the fun factor too. My Tesla is the most fun thing I've ever owned.
I look for excuses to drive, but that's just me. ...cue in @mildone with a 10 paragraph dissertation about how great ICE cars are.

7000 miles is less than a year of driving...that's really not that bad.

Tesla now offering LFP (lithium, iron, phosphate) batteries in US model 3.

Iron batteries will give you less range than nickel, but you can charge iron to 100% on a daily basis without worrying about degradation. Iron cathode should supercharge more quickly too.

Once again, you are completely mischaracterizing my position on ICE cars. This gets old after awhile. Perhaps I need to write 20 paragraphs next time? Using smaller words so you can understand?

You should drop the "fun factor" argument. Your Tesla may be the most fun thing you've ever owned. But it would not be the most fun the thing lots of others have owned. It would be the least fun car I've ever owned.

That's the great thing about words concepts like "fun". It's definition varies widely depending on people's desires, opinions and experiences.

This thread is far worse than the first. But the fact that so many keep coming back to fight is definite proof EVs are both loved and hated, mastering both of the best kinds of PR.
So, they are here to stay....and take over, without a doubt.

I cannot speak for others, but I am neither a lover nor hater of EVs. When I eventually purchase an EV SUV, which will probably happen in around 5-10 years, I'm pretty sure I will like having it. I doubt that an SUV of any kind will ever rise to the level of emotional bond I formed with the sports cars I've owned.

But that's hardly a knock on EVs. It's the vast difference, for me, between sports cars and SUVs. Entirely different vehicle types with entirely different purposes. One is purely about uncompromising fun. The other is about pragmatic point A to point B driving.

Oh, and I disagree that this thread is bad. Or that the other thread was bad. IMO, both threads are great fun. Talking cars, EVs or otherwise, is always fun for people who like cars.

However, I think that maybe, if one's intent with these threads is mostly to advocate for one particular brand (whatever brand that might be), then these threads are much less likely to be much fun. Because such advocacy is extremely personal, purely opinion-based, and more likely to lead to divisiveness than to a shared enjoyment of all the advances and technology with EVs.

Well I keep lurking in this thread as I am in the market to get a new car(lease or purchase). I’m thinking of Audi SQ5 or S5, Porsche Macan, or Tesla model 3. All in the same price range and I’m intrigued by Tesla(I own 200shs) and what they are doing long term—just not sure I want to jump in right now. Just keep looking for clues on deciding and what else is out there

You're shoppin' the wrong types of SUVs, then 😜

I'm in the market for an SUV. But I'm holding off because (a) I don't actually need one, I just want one - so there's no hurry and (b) it's a pure seller's market for SUVs of all kinds right now, so it makes sense to wait on the market to become more neutral or even favorable for buyers.

I'm kind of leaning towards a Macan S or GTS right now. Although, while I've cooled on it slightly, every time I see a Telluride, I want one. Kia hit that one out of the park. I could easily wind up with one of those for which my bank account would thank me.

If you want an EV SUV, and you like the Macans, you might want to wait for the Macan EV to come out. I think it's due as a 2023 model, so sometime in 2022. Or consider the Audi e-Tron (SUV, not GT).

I kind of am, that's true. My current lean is not at all consistent with my initial priorities for an SUV.

However, the Telluride, which is probably sitting in second place for me at the moment, would be consistent with my priorities. They are pretty widely disparate options, I know.

I just can't settle on what I really want. Which is another good reason for me to keep delaying. I've delayed a couple years now, another year or two won't hurt.

And as we've agreed about in the past, the researching and shopping is actually more fun than the owning. I've been having a great time with it.

Spent a weekend with a brand new DB11 back in June.

That was definitely fun.

Telluride looks nice. Might look at it for my next SUV, but I'm leaning bigger.

Hoping Kia develops a Land Cruiser rival as was rumored.

If you're not sure on an EV yet, just lease one of the Germans you mentioned and see what options are available in 3 years.

How was your experience with the car?

I find all the Aston Martin sports cars to be very beautiful cars. IMO, they've have some of the best automotive designers in the business. Mostly unrelated, I'm a Sebastian Vettel fan. So I'm a fan of the Aston Martin F1 team, for whom he drives these days.

Showoff 😜
Do you get the 44 mi range/ hr as advertised?

LOL. I do. The dryer is gas powered, so we had an unused 220 V outlet rerouted to the garage. In the event that folks have an electric dryer, you can have a shared EV charger/dryer connection. Only one can be working at time, so typically a switch is added to turn the juice off to the dryer when the EV is charging (or vice versa).

I started out thinking large SUV (like the Suburban). But as time has passed, I've come to realize I have no need for something that big, at least not at the moment.

I hadn't heard the rumor about a Land Cruiser rival, but that would be interesting. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have been doing a great job in recent years. I just wish they would stop putting such narrow wheels on their cars. If I get a Telluride, I'll replace the wheels/tires on the first day. I admit it's an appearance thing. I don't like how narrow wheels look, although they're lighter, quieter, and better in the snow and rain than wider wheels/tires.

How about just stopping already. This isn't a damn thing we don't know WRT to your feelings about EVs. Consider starting a classic car thread or long distance trip I make evert week thread.

I see the reading comprehension issues persist. Seriously, I could write your posts for you. BUT THAT'S JUST ME was the phrase used when referring to MY Tesla driving experience.
And no, I won't drop the "fun factor" argument, because that's MY opinion and experience. You're certainly not shy about droning on and on about yours. How about another 5 paragraphs about your love of sunroofs? Please tell us again for the 100th time that you're in the market for a gas powered SUV (in a thread about EVs).

It's a great car. And it's a bit of a conundrum. Consider this...

The DB11 (I was driving the convertible) is a dead-even performance match to a Camaro SS - by the numbers. They're all nearly the same. The Aston is roughly 400 lbs. heavier but has 40+ hp over the SS. The Camaro has a better chassis. But (and I'm not even remotely considering fit/finish) the Aston just feels better. Maybe it's the weight, but it's way more GT than sports car. It doesn't really want to be hustled, but if you keep it out of the twisties it wants to go really fast.

And better on gas mileage. Hence the Prius having those super skinny tires

I think we must have passed by each other. I was all in on mid-size, but they have gotten small once I threw an 85-lb dog in the mix with kids, sports gear, bikes, etc. Not sure a mid-size will cut it anymore. Not in love with the full-size market, tho. Trying to get Yakima's new stacker hitch rack so I can carry both bikes and cargo box/basket on the hitch and maybe mid-size will be OK. More interior would be nice, however.

Telluride looks best with nice chunky AT tires, imo, fender flares if tires stick out too far. But that might be a lost mpg too far for our hypersensitive Tesla Bots.

Calm down. Do you always get this angry and offended when other people's viewpoints and opinions differ from yours?

I'm having pleasant conversations with people in the thread. I'm not trolling or attacking anybody. I'm posting my fairly moderate viewpoints regarding the many topics that have sprung up in the thread.

So I'm not seeing why I shouldn't be posting in the thread. If you are having anger management issues with my posts, and don't like what I write, then why not skip right past them? Save yourself the angst.

Why don't you stop trying to stifle other people's opinions in this thread. All forum threads are going to wander around a bit, topically. And I'm not the only one wandering.

You're not understanding my point about dropping the fun factor "argument".

I wasn't, in any way, suggesting you not voice your opinions about anything. If I gave that impression, then I apologize. I enjoy reading about other's opinions on stuff, regardless of whether or not I share those opinions.

I was merely saying that your opinion about your car is not any kind of argument about your car. Nobody here is arguing with you about how you feel, or how you should feel, about your car. How could we? It's just how you feel about it.

I just reminded you that many of us feel the same way about cars we own and that Tesla has no claim to uniqueness among auto-makers in that regard. 'Cause sometimes, a couple of you Tesla fans here in the RUFB forum seem to forget that and think how we feel about our cars is some kind of competition.

What do you think makes the car feel so good? Or is it just that undefinable feel that some cars have when the designers and engineers get it really right?

Maybe it's the setup. It's a beautiful car as you approach it. It's even more beautiful when you're sitting in it. I think those impressions just lend themselves to a feeling that the car is something special. And hell, it should be, right? I mean the friggin' thing cost $239,000.00. But regardless, there's an intoxicating, "come hither" air about it.

Hell, my wife - who never passes on an opportunity to complain about my driving - came back from a spin in the DB11 and rather coyly admitted that she'd had it well beyond 120 mph on one of the local county roads. She, who loves her German sedan but insists that cars are basically just tools, gushed about how much fun the Aston was. I guarantee you if you put her behind the wheel of a Camaro SS her response would be "meh".

I'm trying to get her to test drive a C8. :)

Picking up my Model 3 this morning. Can’t wait
Congratulations! 47K miles in with mine (I was a 2016 line-waiter) and I still love climbing into it every day (as do the 5 friends and family members I convinced to buy their own).
I just detailed the inside for tomorrow's trip to and tailgate at the game (any degreaser is great for removing a summer's worth of sunscreen left behind on my black seats by my daughter 🙄). If you see this plate in the yellow lot tomorrow, say hi!

I’m hoping to be able to get a test drive of a C8 Z06 when it comes out. But I‘m not sure dealers will be too keen on allowing such test drives. I‘m not even sure it’s easy to get a test drive of a base C8 these days, although I expect that situation to improve after the chip shortage resolves.

Midnight silver with black interior. I think my original delivery estimate was 11-15 weeks. It was here in 7.
Nice. All my cars have been some kind of black or some kind of silver. They are the fastest colors. 🙂

So exciting when picking up a new car. Best of luck with it.

fastest colors?
A car being the fastest color is a common light-hearted joke in the automotive enthusiast community.

Similar jokes exist about how the brand stickers, that aftermarket performance part makers often include with their parts, make cars faster when applied. As in “applying those stickers to your rear window gives a net power increase of 5 HP at the wheels”.

It‘s silly and fun and slightly self-deprecating (because it gently mocks our common desire to always increase horsepower).
