OT: Electric vehicles

Order books open next Monday for the newly redesigned 2024 Mustang.

Completely refined interior, refreshed styling and - for the first time - an available 500 hp from the 5.0 liter Coyote V8. Standard horsepower from the 5.0 is now up to 480.

There's also an included "Drift Mode", as if you'd actually need help melting the rear tires with 500 horsepower.

I think that article's reference to e-fuels as "climate neutral" is a little aggressive.

The fuels have to be sustainably sourced / carbon neutral in their manufacture, but they still get burned and so still produce greenhouse gases.
True. But then I'm not sure we have ANY energy sources that are entirely climate neutral.

I think being carbon-improved over gas engines is better than nothing.

You don't need that much power to melt tires. See: Toyota GR86. Just put the car on super skinny tires and have at it.

I agree. I was just taking issue with the publication's choice of words.

Also - wind. I'm thinking more the maritime wind generators more than the big giant ones on (and off) shore. They're way more compact now than back in the day of noisy-ass wind gens that nobody wanted to be near at an anchorage. They can produce up to 1.5kW. Combined with 1.2kW of solar (3 panels) you're talking about an offshore power production rate capable of running the entire boat. It's just so damned exciting.

I took a good, long look at the BRZ over the weekend. It's a great little sports toy and I'm sure, like a Miata, it would be a blast to drive on a good road. Ultimately, that's not my use case, but I do like the vehicle for what it is.

I'd like it more with wider tires and 300 hp. :)

Been seeing the first Electric SUV's around lately. And like the first electric pickup, it's a Rivian.

I know TSLA is the dominant EV player overall, but they have left the door wide open by producing no trucks.

Which I didn't know until I did a deep dive to look it up. A surprisingly large amount of disagreement on the subject, no pun intended. But ultimately "not grammar" wins out.

~18 months after Cybertruck production begins, they'll be the dominant EV pickup producer.

There's some debate on that, too, believe it or not. I actually spent hours trying to figure out what is and isn't grammar. It's not nearly as clear as what I thought. And I ran across some interesting discussions on it along the way.

Some folks make a hard distinction between spoken language and written language. And those folks tend to view grammar as rules for spoken language for which stuff like punctuation and capitalization play no role. They think of them as elements of writing rather than elements of grammar or language.

Anyway, I found it all very interesting.

It frankly makes more sense to put the punctuation outside the quotations if you're not quoting the entire sentence but ultimately up to the editor.

Regardless, it's not wrong to write it as mildone did.
 
The demand seems to be there for the Cybertruck. I'm waiting to see how practical the car is for working folks. I think Ford did a great job making the Lightning useful for contractors and tailgaters (the drain in the frunk - genius!).

Plus the first reservations were taken in 2019. 3.5 years to get to that 1.5 mil.

So grain of salt with that total.
 
Absolutely. Because all of the R&D money is lumped into that reporting structure.

Again (for what I believe is the 3rd time) if you subtract the R&D costs and just look at cost of manufacturing vs. sales, the Ford EVs are profitable on a unit basis.
Team Tesla likes to act like Tesla was immediately profitable, and that the early years of losing money in EV for the legacies is a sign that bankruptcies are in their future.
