When this thread had its first life, I posted Fairytale of NYC by the Pogues. Here is the same song but, unfortunately, being sung at Shane’s funeral a few days ago.
Link seems broken, so reposting the funeral version, featuring the great Glenn Hansard (recently saw him in Philly) doing Shane MaGowan's vocal part and Lisa O'Neill doing Kirsty MacColl's, and the original, below. The Pogues were a fantastic band (if a bit uneven and unpredictable, live) and the list of best rock and roll Christmas songs ever begins and ends with Fairytale of New York. The song has a bit of special meaning for me as I was on assignment in Ireland for several months in 1993 and spent Christmas Eve working until about 9 pm, then I went to the pub with several coworkers and Fairytale came on and it was just magical to see the whole damn bar belting that song out (including me - my coworkers were impressed I knew the song).
But since the thread is about best Christmas songs, I'll throw in a few more I like
Rock/Pop: Happy Xmas by John Lennon, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town by Bruce, /jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms), Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses, Christmas in Hollis (Run DMC), Let It Snow...(Dean Martin), Christmas, Christmas (Mojo Nixon - a hilarious take-off on Louie-Louie), Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee), It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Andy Williams), The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole)
Traditional: What Child Is This (Greensleeves), Silent Night, and Hark the Herald Angels Sing
