OT: Green Giant Arborvitae Advice

I drove past the soccer field today, can see right through the forsythia since they have no leaves yet. So forsythia isn't the best for a barrier.

I planted 5 gallon (24-30”) Lyland Cyprus trees, watered them weekly and used evergreen fertilizer twice a year and those puppies were huge after 36 months. As others said 6’ planting distance works well. Keep the base covered in mulch. Worst thing was spraying for bag worms annual every summer. Home Depot rents out 1 or 2 person augers that work well. I went with the two person as the bore diameter is bigger making it easier for the roots to grow faster.

We went with white pine...about 200ft of road side. 5/6' at time of planting and grew about 3 ft per year. At year 12, they average about 35ft and an incredible noise and view barrier. Our house is well known in the area for our pines...

I love a mix of pines, holly, cypress and hemlock

We shortened the grass area of our yard and planted a mix of these
