Folks, it's time to accept that with all the things that need to happen for players to transfer in a timely and orderly manner so they are available for spring practice that these bowl games need to go.
FBS should follow the same format that all the other football divisions follow and start their playoffs in December right after Championship week. The HS signing period should be in early December like it was this year and then the transfer portal should open up in mid-December through mid-January so transfers have time to visit and enroll at the new school. Additionally, every football program should be allowed up to 15 additional practices for young player development.

College sports is a joke and people don’t realize what’s really going on. Look at the transfer portal numbers = insane. You have teams that over-recruit only to then tell a bunch of freshman they are no longer wanted. Then you have players that only care about $$$ and will go to the highest bidder. It’s in all sports. Baseball is one of the worst for players because the poor kids that get shown the door after working hard all summer and fall don’t even get to make it to spring. Then, they can’t even transfer anywhere D1 to play in the spring because the baseball rules are BS. So they have to go JUCO and commit for 1-2 years. You even have HS soccer kids that were committed for almost two years getting phone calls on signing day that their offer is rescinded - and some were scheduled to leave school early after Xmas break. But nobody will call out the coaches and process because they fear being black-balled.

I think there needs to be a limit as to how many transfers a program can take each year. Or some type of sliding scale as to how many transfers in you can compared to transfers in . It’s all very complicated
There isn't even a limit any more on how many scholarships you can give for players from highschool because you can't know how many you will lose. I don't see how you can limit how many coming in when you don't know how many are going out. The roster limit is the only limiting factor.
I don't see it as a mess. It's chaotic at times but I'll take the good it brings over the bad on balance.
You don't get the TCU, IU, ASU, Colorado, Vandy, BYU etc..type stories without it. If there is an issue like Marshall that happens at times, on balance I'll make that trade.
Yes - for example go look at what Pitt did to their girl soccer recruiting class. Penn State also. Plenty of others too.
And the baseball powerhouses will recruit 15+ pitchers in a class and then bounce a bunch of freshman only to then bring in transfers and JUCOs. The kids are totally screwed because if they stay on schollie they have no access to facilities or the team. Then if they transfer they can’t play anywhere until a year or more later.
I don’t know the specifics of those instances but have seen similar in stories I’ve read. They weren’t due to the portal but upcoming roster/scholarship limit sizes across sports. I don’t know remember all the details though.
Yes several factors. Pitt was notorious for over-recruiting and the settlement talk alone ended with a dozen girls in the portal and a bunch of offers rescinded. The worst part is how long they waited to tell the girls and the signing day nonsense is BS.
I tend to think this rescinding stuff should generally be a one time event because it’s due to the NCAA settlement.
So when everyone is right sized after this year and the settlement is in effect, I’d think it shouldn’t happen with the frequency it might be happening at currently.
I tend to agree - but at the same time what we will continue to see is a percentage of players from each team will be asked to leave in order to back-fill those slots with transfers. In effect freshman/soph year becomes nothing more than a college tryout.

Maybe not a week before signing day. But I know a player who was balls deep into his commitment, got his offer from Tulane rescinded after they started 10-0. Wound up signing with and starting for Delaware in their playoffs.

The very low transfer rates from the service academies (can only do so during their first 2 years) has likely contributed to their improvement over the past year or two. Continuity has to matter somewhat.
As I said in the portal thread, the portal ought to not open until after 1/4 or so, when all but the CFP semis/finals are over - I would think that still should be enough time for players to enroll in another school for the spring, although it certainly makes it a tighter window. And if that doesn't work, maybe get rid of spring practice and allow that practice time to be added to summer practice and have the transfer portal open near the end of spring semester - has the same impact on the following season, but doesn't wreck bowl season.
Not possible in terms of kids transferring and being signed up for classes in time for Spring semester. For example Spring classes begin at Rutgers this year on January 16th and the NC game won't be played until Jan 20th.
Schools make exceptions for athletes all the time. This could be figured out. Its no longer about academics, unfortunately
Students who do not play in bowl games or playoffs should have to pay back all the money for the Fall semester to the school that was given to them—tuition, room and board, books, computers, etc. Coaches contracts should stipulate that they can not leave a school or do any work for another school until their current team post season is over.
I don’t like perpetual free agency/roster turnover in any pro sports . But that’s just me and the system is what it is.

Do that and find out very quickly why no one wants to come to your school to play. The current environment has too much packed into a small window. Bowl games are the least important thing happening in the entire window. They are basically exhibition games now outside of the playoff.
