OT: Marshall forfeited

Bowl games have already been ruined with the over saturation of them that they have to look for 6-6 teams from the Sun Belt to be played
Disagree as football is my favorite sport. The season is the shortest, with the most time between games, and seasons. For anyone who thinks there are too many bowl games fine. I enjoyed South Alabama beating Western Michigan last night.

Anyway this line of attack is usually from basketball junkies, who not only get a longer season now starting around Halloween instead of Thanksgiving, an ever increasing NCAA tournament, and lesser season ending tournaments like the NIT. Add it all up, way more games than football. I as a diehard football fan don't bitch, I don't watch games I'm not interested in. Diehards of other sports should do the same as football is, and has been the sport that funds more sports programs around the country.

This is probably one of the most condescending, POS posts in this forum. So I’m a bitch, basketball junkie who’s not a football fan because I think it’s stupid to have a meaningless bowl game with 57 fans is stupid? GTFOOH.

OMG I was speaking in general. I was not knocking you, im sorry you took it personally. I was illustrating why I think that too many football games argument has its flaws, and yes it usually is a diehard basketball type that makes the argument, but to each his/her own, we never met. BTW I wasn't calling you a bitch. To bitch i.e. talk, as in most likely a basketball diehard is complaining about the number of football games even though they get more than double the number, their season is now earlier starting in the meat of the football season, and they have a shorter wait in-between seasons.

Maybe if football played a little tournament in conference to decide a champion at the end of the year, instead of how it's now done, and we had a " surprise " team like FSU win the ACC that would make it better. I do know when you look at the number of teams that make 🏀 tournaments, it is about the percentage that make bowl games. BTW bowl games still do great on television. The higher cost in today's money coupled with technology upgrades that give a much better home experience, is the reason college football attendance is down. Not just with useless bowls. To diehard football fans it's worth every one, because after we have a 9 month wait, for in most cases, only 13 games.

Good Night

Schools make exceptions for athletes all the time. This could be figured out. Its no longer about academics, unfortunately
When have you ever experienced a school making an exception for someone not registered for classes on time? Furthermore the transfer window is about a month long, so under your scenario kids would have until late February to make their transfers? You really think schools will fit kids into classes a full month and a half after they’ve begun? There’s no way. Not to mention securing enough housing 2/3 of the way into the school year.

At some point you have to recognize these athletes are also students, whether being paid or not.

Which is because pandora's box has opened, and a poison is now circulating across the landscape. I wish more people would have looked and saw the players pay was their scholarship, professional coaching, and professional trainers. If so maybe we would not be tied to a system pro sports couldn't make work, with no oversight.

I just hope it is slow acting and we all will be long gone before things completely implode.

many of us argued this but the cancer of 'mines' seeped through. Most of these kids would be in jail, pumping gas etc etc without those scholarships.

blame the coaches for their ridiculous salaries and blame the schools for putting football ahead of education and blame the cost structure and drivers of such

we're just fortunate to have a seat at the table FOR NOW which is why it's imperative that RU get it's shit together and demand excellence instead of 5yrs in being a developmental rebuild that many of our so called fans refer to us as

With NIL and the Transfer Portal, the college football system is broken and needs to be regulated in some fashion.

The Marshall football experience will provide the catalyst needed for discussions to begin on what needs to be done going forward.

Like you, I enjoy the Bowl Games because they bring together teams which ordinarily would not play each other.

Most schools (Rutgers-Howard,Akron/Pitt-Kent State, Youngstown State) schedule less competitive teams in the hopes of achieving a 6-6 record to get a Bowl Game which for the most part are more interesting than other scheduled games (note above). Additionally, the Bowl Games give the HC more practice sessions to work with the recruits who will be coming back next year.

No one is forced to watch these Bowl Games but many will.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

So- the many very accomplished student athletes we have produced from our football team over the years don't count.

And out of the 105 current kids on each football team around the country- you do not think that at least more than half of them are not taking advantage of their education?

Or are you referring to the top 10% on each team, the other 15-20% stuck behind two 4 stars or the bench warmers who may transfer down because they love the game but also are attending classes.

The hype over the years about athletes not being students is just stupid and that also counts now with transfer/NIL...

Why give examples for Rutgers and PItt? Bama played Mercer and WKU.. UGA played TN Tech and UMASS

Agree, I said MOST schools schedule these less competitive teams. Since this is a Rutgers Board and some of the posters stated that they did not like the Bowl system, I was just pointing out that many of the Bowl Games are more competitive/interesting than other scheduled games.

Not a negative reflection on Rutgers or Pitt.

Agreed, in an age where Alabama just lost a starting DB to the portal, developmental programs are now just developing talent for a higher bidder. It's a damn shame the model used for pay for play, was HC at blueblood and not grad assistant or analyst. For a highly scrutinize year around nomadic profession, most coaches are not Uber rich. In fact many who stay with coaching past grad assistant are from well to do families because they need assistance from family or friends to subsidize their living expenses.

Bingo 100%. I was not knocking anyone or any other sport, just pointing out the facts as I see them. It annoys me the complaints go only to the football season when at the Power 4 Level non playoff teams, fans only get at most 13 games. By far the smallest amount.

This is "currently" the single biggest thing I see as a huge plus for Greg...He often has stated "developmental" but we may be one of the few P4 schools with that holds most of our talent we have developed over 2-3 years.
If we can manage keeping most of the players of need and use the portal to fill gaps while not losing many, that could be huge.

Yes.. could be huge over similar type programs.. but the "haves" will be re-loading with the best talent from the portal every season while also retaining their own.

We'd also be captive to whatever it is special about this program that helps retain talent. The moment we lose that, no matter how that occurs, we are in deep doo-doo.

This whole pay the players / NIL thing was always about making sure the name teams.. the haves.. go unchallenged. The mob was getting too close.. it was too hard for the haves to retain talent with the 85 schollie thing. It was all about play time and TV games.. now all the games are TV games.. the folks back home can see you play anywhere. Of course championships and winning play a big role too.. but if you cannot crack the roster.. why sit on their bench where you are useful to them for practice and insurance?

But now.. it is about how much they can pay. And the HAVES CAN PAY.

The rules allowing teams to play on 📺 more than once in a while, thus allowing more parity didn't happen until 1984. Still it was not until this century, the smallest, newest, programs could assure their fans could see them. This upside-down change in the model ultimately just ensures a few blueblood programs will end up on top.

Don't feel bad about losing Bailey. Why because the pizza money must be great as Miller Moss ex. USC QB is transferring to Louisville.

Do these athletes attend class at their university? If so they are students. I had several classes with former Rutgers football players and was a former athlete for Rutgers myself (lacrosse) I can assure you they make us go to class.

At some point perhaps you need to admit that you have a problem separating college football from the NFL. Even with NIL, 99% of these kids will never make it in the NFL

Schools make expectations for these students..whether it’s delaying tests..school work..etc. every school does this. There shouldn’t be an issue delaying admission a few weeks.
