utley takes out tejeda on a bush league play, never touches second and is safe. Utley is a bum....can't take Rutgers talk anymore

I think Tejeda's pirouette move put him in harm's way. Utley got clocked too. I was reminded I was watching baseball as the rescue crew spent 10 minutes on Tejeda. If it was a football game he'd a been scrapped off the field in no time

Utley should be out, never touched 2nd base, why we didn't appeal shocks me.

The rule on takeout slides is that you have to at least make an attempt to touch second. Utley didn't. He should have been called out for that reason alone.

Not to mention that the neighborhood play is not supposed to be subject to replay. (I suppose the umps could have decided that Tejada just missed the bag, but it pretty obviously was because Utley was coming.)

I don't believe that you can appeal the neighborhood play.

They awarded Utley second because he was called out and didn't think he needed to touch second. It's complete BS, the umps are now making up rules.

Utley's slide past the bag put him in harm's way. That shouldn't be a legal baseball play.

Tejada has a broken fibula.

Utley clocked himself by running into Tejada. I have no sympathy for him.

Poor kid. He was our best defensive SS. Utley is a real dirt bag. I hope someone Ray Knights his ass the next time he slides into a base.

I may actually enjoy watching him get knocked out more than winning this series.

I can't remember the last time a player started his slide even with the bag, broke the SS's leg, never touched 2nd, left the field on his own without touching 2nd, and was still allowed to go back and take the base. That was the difference in the ball game, as the next guy flew out to left for what should have been the 3rd out of the inning with the game tied at 2.

I was flipping to the US men's soccer match when Tejada was being treated so I missed the explanation of why the umpires let Utley back on 2nd.

For those that don't understand how dirty a player Chase Utley is, just Google it. Countless players have called him out over his career. Even Don Mattingly wouldn't defend the play during his press conference.

Utley is a douchebag and the umpires and MLB and Joe Torre (as Chief Baseball Officer) should be embarrassed for:

1 - Not ruling Utley out on interference for an illegal "slide" and causing a DP
2 - Allowing Utley back on 2B when he never touched the base
3 - Listening to Joe Torre - as Chief Baseball Officer - stating that Utley would have been out had someone from the Mets tagged him out. Hey Asshole Torre - your umpire called Utley out - so why would any Met tag him out and plus Tejada with a broken leg cannot tag him out. Torre made such as ass of himself - it's ridiculous - but of course the jerk is protecting his boy - Mattingly.

I'm too pissed for even bitching at Collins for his stupidity during this episode (not challenging the interference call); not having Neise pitch to Adrian Gonzalez and his asinine press conference where he actually defended the umps.

Did not see press conference, but what did you expect Collins to do? The umpires on the field were just the messengers.

First, according to New York Post article, Utley admitted that it was his intent to break up double play.

http://nypost.com/2015/10/11/why-chase-utley-is-so-convinced-his-slide-was-clean/

Second, according to the Rules cited by ESPN, players are not allowed to try to break up double plays.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/p...at-ruined-everybodys-night-except-the-dodgers

Third, since Utley never touched the bag, he clearly had no intent to try to get to the bag, which he has already admitted was not his intent. Actually, pretty straight up response by Utley.

Pretty clean cut issue, and he should be suspended for the rest of the series.

Here's hoping baseball does nothing and that Utley gets what's coming to him...a pariah in New York.

That play happens multiple times a night in the regular season. Players go into second base trying to break up the double play with no intention of trying to touch the base all the time. Utely was well within reach of the base. Only thing Utely is guilty of is sliding late.

That's the whole issue. Plenty of guys do very legal, very respectable takeout slides to prevent double plays. All within the game and guys know that. But this is just dirty and disgusting. He started his side at the bag with total intent to injure. The goal is to get the guy to have to jump over you, not to break his leg when he can't even see you. So, so dirty and Utley should be suspended for the rest of the playoffs for this (Yankees fan here btw, looking at this as a fan of the game)

I expect a manager to stand up for his team in a playoff series and advise them what a pathetic job it was by the umps (which everyone knows) and argue his ass off on the no call interference play - rather than defending the umps. Did you hear the comments by Wright; Kelly Johnson; Murphy and Cuddyer after the game? Our manager should take cue from that. Also Alderson and Ricco got into a heated discussion with Torre and the umps after the game. That's Collins' job....man, regardless of what the Mets do, I hope this is it for Collins.....total buffoon and how he managed the 7th inning was a travesty as well......keeping Reed in to pitch to Adrian Gonzalez when he had Niese available...

Time to make a statement . I would pitch right at his head might even bring in Syndegard to pitch just to Utley with a 101 mile an hour fastball. Might not happen in this series but Chase Utley is a marked man.

I hope Utley and the Dodgers don't complain tomorrow night when Harvey drill someone in the ribs. First choice Utley, 2nd choice their shortstop, 3rd choice any other Dodger.

Lots of proof in this thread that Mets fans are indeed the classiest in all of baseball.
The slide into second by Utley is part of baseball. Stop your whining.

Putting aside whether the slide was legit, the call was ridiculous. He's called out and never hits the bag and then they give him the base b/c Tejada's foot is not on the bag and he didn't tag him. Well why would he tag him when he's called out and whatever happened to the vicinity call. No matter how you slice it, a terrible game changing call IMO.

First, the ump should have exercised his proper judgment, and called Utley out for interference. That is part of baseball.

Second, the ump should have exercised his proper judgment, and called the batter out as well. That is part of baseball.

Third, the Mets need to retaliate. That is part of baseball.

Fourth, Utley should be suspended. That is part of baseball.

Fifth, the SS suffered a broken leg, and that is not part of baseball / takeout slides.

So, get lost with your pot shots at Mets fans. If that had happened to Jeter, or any of the greats, there would be hell to pay ...Upton is 100% correct.

Mondays game will start with warning to both teams. If a pitcher drills anyone you had better be prepared to lose that pitcher for a few games

I grew up aDodger fan and like the Yankees now. I wouldn't mind seeing a fast ball thrown high and inside at Utley. Guy is a piece of shit.

I predict that Utley does not play again in this series unless there is some emergency or Mattingly can figure out a way to use him that guarantees the pitcher won't throw at his head.

No way a warning should occur before the game. If a Dodger batter gets hit, than warn both teams. Not fair to either pitcher for a pre game warning.

Mets activating Matt Reynolds to replace Tejada. Not sure how that will work out since he hasn't played in over a month.

It's all o'k. Matt Harvey will not intend to injure Utley when he sticks a 97 mph fastball in his ear on Monday. Because it's all about whether you actually intend to injure somebody, right Utley?

Only saw the play on tape numerous times this morning, but according to a baseball friend who just canceled on our
Giant tail-gate tonight, MLB will make a statement tonight with a fine and/or more likely a 1-game suspension for
Utley that won't be appealed by Dodgers (gather those details are being worked out now) and there will be no
ugliness at Shea aka Citi field tomorrow night. Makes sense at least until it happens again?

Headed to boys tailgate. Let's go G-men--save the weekend!

Those types of plays happen all the time. The difference here is a broken fibula and playoff game.
No they really don't. Sliding hard to break up a double play is routine-ish. Waiting until you're pretty much on top of the guy to start sliding is not normal and the intent is malicious and reckless in nature. Maybe he didn't want to hurt the guy, but he wanted to tackle him which is what he did. And to paraphrase Cuddyer, the last I checked tackling wasn't part of baseball. He's also done this exact same thing to Tejada back in 2010. Utley is no innocent, he's always taken it past playing hard and tough and into the territory of reckless if not dirty and malicious. Particularly with the Mets and other division rivals.

Now normally in this situation, he has to have tried to get near the bag or touch it or start his slide at a point which could be called reasonable effort to have tried to. He did none of those things, his only goal was to crash at full speed into Tejada. Therefore its interference or obstruction by the baserunner which is an automatic double play and would have ended the inning. The umps literally handed the Dodgers a win last night. Now they may have won anyway, but statistically if they didn't at least tie it up there the statistical probability was rather low. The only thing I've heard from the other side of this that I agree with is that Tejada shouldn't have had his back to the runners. But that doesn't make the injury on him and it doesn't mean that that tackle doesn't still break his leg.
