OT Mets getting screwed

This suspension won't stand up to an appeal. His agent will produce footage of countless similar "rolling slides" that didn't result in suspension

I bet you're wrong - the Commissioner won't rule until about 10 minutes before Monday's game, and will uphold the suspension. The next stop is arbitration, and the arbitrator would be very unlikely to rule before the series is over.

You'd have thunk that out of all the Mets connected people out there, someone would've tweeted or phoned to point out Utley never touched the base. You's also think that somebody at the game would've looked at all of those replays and challenged.

Typical Mets.

This play would only be viewed as "not dirty" viewed with a lens from 20 years ago. Today's game, like it or not, is played differently and that was a dirty play (apparently MLB agrees w/ a 2 game suspension).

What really frosts me is that the umpire crew/MLB screwed up with calling him safe upon replay. The rationale is that because he was immediately called out he did not need to touch the base. However, by that same reasoning, Tejada could have easily tagged him if he was immediately called safe (ball was still in his hand). In the good old days, dirty play or not, he would have been called out and retribution would have happened when appropriate.

I'm not a big defender of Collins, but he had a pretty long discussion with the crew chief after the replay decision was made, and I suspect pretty strongly that part of that was him saying he wanted to challenge based on either the interference rule or the rule that says you're out if you leave the base path, and he was told he couldn't. Otherwise there's no reason for such a long conversation.

Were you not watching the game and hear Ron Darling say that he placed a call to MLB in New York after that half inning and that he received an explanation that as a result of the umpire mistakenly calling him out his not touching the bag was then irrelevant. Got to love people coming along running their mouth when they have no idea what they're talking about. As if Collins was out there talking to the umps about what restaurants to dine in while in New York.

I think MLB did the right thing here by suspending Utley. It also helps MLB (and perhaps the Mets) avoid a potential worse issue tonight. Harvey has been called out on a couple of things recently and I'd hate to see him do something too stupid and jeopardize the series. Payback will happen at some point though.

Could the Mets have played the game under protest and gotten a ruling afterwards? I mean, that was the game-tying play, followed by the game-winning hit shortly afterwards.

At this point its done and its time to move on and have Harvey and Matz close these punks out in the greatest city in the world.

You can protest rules issues, but you can't protest judgment calls. So they couldn't have protested on the interference issue because the ump decided there wasn't interference. I would surmise that the same principle applies to the ruling that Utley was safe and entitled to the base.

Sort of lost in all of this is that the replay challenge might never have happened if Tejada hadn't been hurt, since it seemed like the Dodgers didn't look at the replay until fairly deep into the delay.

Eddie Coleman on the Fan made a good point. Why do runners have to play flag football at home plate but get to play tackle football at second base?

My first question is I thought a replay in baseball had to be challenged instantly ? Mattingly sure took his time .
Zappa , how do you think the mets retaliate ?

I know less of baseball than most on the board, but I don't want Harvey throwing at anyone. Don't need him putting any runners on unnecessarily. Especially don't need him ejected. Getting 27 outs is the only revenge I need.

Tough spot. Get a nice lead and then put one in utley's ear and try to knock him out .

The rule is kind of like football - you have until the next play. In practice, umps will hold up the next play for a little bit while you decide, but not too long. Here, Mattingly had a lot longer because of the injury, and probably wouldn't have had time to check if there hadn't been such a long delay.

Utley has to live with the fact he's gonna get drilled, you make that play you get ripped hard.
He needs to take one right in the neck.
If he doesn't play someone else takes one in the ribs, that guy can go thank Utley.
In 1969, the Cubs knocked down Agee, next inning Koosman drilled Santo with two strikes and broke his wrist.

No, the baseball rule is supposed to be instant . Not wait until the next play .

In baseball the next play generally is in about 5 seconds, unlike football, which is relatively instant. But what's actually happened is that the team that might want to challenge causes a 15-30 second delay for someone to look at the replay, which the umpires tolerate. It's evolved from the beginning of the first year, when the manager would wander out onto the field and chat for a while about how he wasn't so sure about that play until he got the sign from the dugout as to whether he should challenge or not.

BTW, Cal Ripken's view of the Utley play seems to have evolved a bit, too. When asked about whether it was okay tonight, he was equivocal, unlike on Saturday night.

It looks like the freaking umpires just gave a warning to start the game. That's uncalled for.

ETA: Maybe not. It looks like something else. Maybe a complaint from the Dodgers about some equipment issue is the current speculation in the booth.

I think they can let it go for now. Get Utley next year.
Yup. Only exception is if the Mets are winning a laugher tonight and Utley comes up late. Then you can drill him tonight. Have Robles do it with one of those 100 MPH fastballs he can sling.

I like Zappa's suggestion about putting it in his neck. Zap's coldblooded.

Yeah, but in that case you want to make sure you have Robles for the NLCS, so maybe not.

Well after the way Goeddel looked last night I think he could be sacrificed. LOL. Besides if they were to face the Cubs I believe you might want add another lefty with Rizzo, Schwarber, Fowler and Montero all batting from that side.

I thought it was a good play by Utley. I want guys who play like that on MY team. He's won a lot of games over his career. But I understand why Mets fans don't like him.
