OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

How good is this Japanese guy?
1) This Japanese guy has a name. Kodai Senga. (Sorry, but we all have our hot buttons, and this is one of mine.)

2) I have no f'n idea how good he is

3) But what I do know is how good he is PERCEIVED to be. I know this from the contract he got - $75MM over 5 years. $15MM AAV. Mid-rotation money. The Mets expect him to be a solid mid-rotation starter. We shall see.

So the Japanese guy might be good or the Japanese guy might not be good. Guess we’ll have to see.

So then - if the season began today (which BTW my sources have informed me it does not) here's the likely roster.

STARTING LINEUP
Nimmo CF
Marte RF
Lindor SS
Alonso 1B
McNeil 2B
Canha LF
Vogelbach DH
Escobar 3B
Narvaez C

COMMENT - Other than platoons at DH and C, this is pretty much carved in stone.

BENCH
Nido
Guillorme
Ruf OR Vientos
Lee OR Locastro

COMMENT - Alvarez and Baty both begin the season in Syracuse. Neither will end it there. Those last two bench positions could use an upgrade. Nothing that Adam Duvall and Jurickson Profar wouldn't solve.

STARTING PITCHERS
Scherzer
Verlander
Senga
Quintana
Carrasco

COMMENT - The only question here is whether Carrasco gets dealt to free up a spot for Peterson or Megill, and to save a few bucks in luxury tax.

RELIEF PITCHERS
Diaz
Ottavino
Robertson
Raley
Smith
Yourguess
Isasgood
Asmine

COMMENT - Those last three guys could be upgraded. Your guess is as good as mine.
I like your assessment but I don't think you can trade Cookie. JV and Max are older and I worry about innings and injuries. We will need 7 starters with injuries. My only other quibble would be I could see Baty or Alvarez making the team out of spring training if they have a big spring. Knda like Pete a few years back. Leaning toward Alvarez because of the power, so Nido may be to odd man out.

I really don’t like trading Cookie at all as a 4/5 starter he is better than 90% of the league in that role.
I actually think there will be a Alonso type rookie to make the team this year- but like Pete, it will be a very good prospect but not Alvarez or Baty- my gut is telling me either Vientos or Mauricio

Any of the 4 is fine with me.

If it falls apart, all sides come off looking foolish, its one thing if the Giants come off looking like cold feet and backing out since their GM Farhan is negatively looked at by the fanbase, but if the Mets do it as well, Boras looks really bad too and the Mets lose out on a premium player that at least for half of the contract should be healthy, its more the long term whether it will deteriorate but if he contributes to a WS title then its all worth it. Ultimately Correa is the one that loses out if this falls through because if Cohen is unwilling to pay him, no one will give Correa another long-term deal for the rest of his career. It'll get done.
Nope.

If the Mets make no further moves at DH, I think Vientos makes the team over Ruf. They have to add another OF though. Have to.

I think the Mets want to get Alvarez more catching experience before they bring him up.

dammitt 008 lol 🤪 i was not asking you- I am actually curious. He went from a Diaz type untouchable to just get the hell rid of him over night.
Sorry, it was easy pickins😁 since the 3 Amigos came in. You know how they love when there's a negative Mets story, lol

I was extremely impressed with Mauricio seeing him 3 times this summer.

Senga is second coming of Yu Darvish

Alvarez hits like #1 prospect

Baty becomes Bohm

Escobar plays to 80% of September Escobar all season

Vientos and Mauricio destroy AAA pitching and are big trade pieces

Top 5 in lineup do what they do

Narvaez thinks it’s 2019 again and hits 278 with 20 HR ( 2021 266 and 11 )

LFGM

Super Bowl - Valentine’s Day - pitchers and catchers 5-6 weeks away

Can I tweak this statement to say fanbase? 😁 Kirby Smart says "the worst disease that can surround a football program is entitlement". Says at UGA they have to continue to ‘eat off the floor’ Should be a lesson learned for so many.

MLB Network begins its annual ranking of Top 10 players at each position right now, with its Top 10 Relief Pitchers and Rightfielders.

Edwin Diaz Numero Uno relief pitcher! Starling Marte #7 RF.

What's Alvarez reputation behind the plate? Is he Sanchez like, a work in progress, or solid? If the first two, the veterans at the front of the rotation and Senga may prefer pitching to someone else. Just a thought.

Better than Sanchez but no one will mistake him for being the best defensive catcher in the game. He's a work in progress back there. Strong arm.

I don't see Profar as a good fit and don't think he will sign to be a bench player. Canha better than Profar in most categories and defensively slightly better. Might have to look into a trade for that last OF spot.

Trade is fine

Showing interest in Tommy Pham
You could do worse. Couldn’t stand him, Kolten Wong, Harrison Bader and that Randal Girchuk guy when they were on the Cardinals. All guys who you can’t stand playing against but love having them on your team.
