OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Is there any team that would want Hamilton? I'd think if we were sellers at the deadline a deal would include Hamilton so we can get rid of his contract
Who’s gonna trade for a guy that’s most likely out for rest of regular season and has a slight chance of playing in playoffs

so you wouldn't trade Mercer and Holtz for a forward, 2 defenseman and a goalie. You would wait for the offseason to acquire a goalie and a few D.

I respect that opinion...I just don't know if I would give up this year PLUS are Mercer's future salaries going to come at that much of a discount that you can replace them with?

Nemec and Hughes are young and cheap.
Bratt and Hughes are stars that quite frankly are in limited supply.
Can't everything else be acquired via free agency?

I do think we are about to see inflation with the salary cap going up. FAs are going to get more though.

Would certainly not give up Mercer. Huge young asset for us who does it all and will be a big part of our future success.

I also wouldn’t trade Holtz, but the way Iindy has been using him (he’s not a 4th liner)…maybe he is expendable.

If we do fall out of contention in February and decide to sell…Toffoli and Palat would be the guys I try ton get rid of..

1. Would you admit any chances of a deep playoff run would need D and a goalie?
2. I suppose you are OK throwing this season away?

Again i respect your opinion and I see the merit.

Would Columbus (or NJ Devils) trade Hamilton for gaudreau?

Gaudreau is awful and you know COlumbus is regretting the contract. Hamilton would have some value on a team that can use an offensive defenseman.

1. I’d love a goalie, but Ive also seen flashes of brilliance from both Daws and Vitek at points this year. Hopefully they improve and become more consistent. Neither are bad goalies..they’ve just been playing badly. That could certainly change in February.

I’ve said all season when we get healthy, our forward group is so talented, we can overcome our lack of D with overpowering O. Just look at last game…it’s possible. May not be the formula in the playoffs…but once in the playoffs, anything can happen.

2. I’m not ok with throwing the season away. We are in a good spot for a playoff position..I don’t think staying pat is “throwing the season away” when we’re right there.

If Mercer gets offered 5yr $30M do you match?

If the salary cap goes up as much as discussed there is going to be extra money. You are going to pay inflated market value for Mercer or you get draft picks

Zero need for gaudreau on this team. If devils trade dougie (not against that at all..but what’s his value right now and who would want him?)…it would have to be for another D or goalie help

100%, but little need for Dougie over the remainder of the contract. He isn't going to get PP minutes so his asset of being an offensive D is really going to be watered down.

2024-25 are we better off with Hamilton or Gaudreau?

It is trading one bad contract for another

id stick with Dougie..good locker room guy who actually wants to be here.

Will he be happy not playing on the PP the rest of his career?

If Luke's last name wasn't Hughes he might be the guy that i would trade for next year and get a sh!t ton back.

Bratt and Hughes are GREAT contracts.

Do agree about Luke. If not for his last name I think he’d be the young guy to sell.

I guess you haven’t noticed how much more proficient the devils PP is this year with Luke running the first unit . Dougie can always run the second . To even contemplate trading Luke clearly shows how much you don’t know about hockey . He’s a 20 year old kid playing 20+ mins a night, runs the first PP , skating and passing is off the charts , is a lethal threat in OT 3v3, he’s a top pairing dman in the making .

I don't know hockey as much as I know basketball.....I do know that NJ has a contractual obligation with Hamilton for 4 more years at $9,000,000 per year. I totally get that Luke is young and is a much better skater and passer and will get better as a defensive defenseman. The contract isn't going away. He is and will be a very good offensive defenseman but those talents will only be used on 5X5.

Wouldn't the Devils be better off trading Luke Hughes for a young forward that will have a similar contract. You would then have 1 less forward hole to fill and have all the cap space for stay at home D and a goalie?

Hughes would bring back a ton of value.

Right now today...........what is a better team...
Hamilton (no Hughes) and Ryan Graves
Hamilton and Hughes

2 obvious things
1. Hamilton is hurt
2. Luke Hughes is going no where

Greene is telling us he’s not a hockey fan without actually saying it ITT
I have played basketball all my life. I know the game inside and out. I hate what the game has become. My son played hockey and I started following and loving hockey ever since.

I have missed maybe 3 Devils games all year. I have even taped them when they overlap with RU games. I am pretty big Devils fan. I don't know strategy. I know what a defenseman is supposed to do and the responsibilites as my kid was one.

I’m glad you chose the Devils as your team.

I’m not trying to be a dick but you’re saying some cringe stuff today with trade suggestions

Ask Pittsburgh fans how much they hate that Ryan graves contract already . He’s got 5 more years at 4.5 million and he’s been a turd. Luke Hughes makes 950k. I’d take Hughes and Hamilton . Why would we trade Luke a dman, who we are short of “, for a forward who we have plenty of . Devils are tops of the metro in scoring and have the core top forwards bratt , Nico , Jack , timo and hopefully Mercer locked up. Devils need defense . To trade Luke or Nemec would be stupid .
