OT: NY Mets Season

Oh well. I always hope the Mets keep me entertained until college football season. They’ll probably be out of it by Memorial Day now. That fast start could be wiped out pretty quickly.

I wish they would just blow it up, get 5 mediocre pitchers and focus on the hitting. I’m so done with planning a season around a couple of top line pitchers, a bunch of garbage arms, and almost nothing else. There is too much pressure on Syndergaard and deGrom to win all of their starts. If one slips, you’re losing 3 of every 5 games.

This was my position during the off-season.

I suppose there's some positives in the season being over by the first week in May. Could take me a while to think of them, though.

DeGrom currently has a WAR of 1.5. Let's say hypothetically that if he had not been hurt, he would have been able to attain a WAR of 6.5 by season end. That is a stretch, as it would be a lifetime best by a wide margin and would have placed him third in the NL last year. But let's assume that.

Let's further assume the worst case scenario that he is out for the season. There is absolutely no reason to assume that at this point, but let's do it anyway.

SO... his absence means that other things equal, the Mets will win five fewer games this year. FIVE. That's significant, no way to sugarcoat it. Five games decides a lot of pennant and wildcard races.

BUT...
  1. If the lack of those five wins means the season is over, then it isn't much of a season to begin with.
  2. I said "other things equal" but they never are. It is quite possible that those five wins can be made up elsewhere. We shall see.

Not sure if you are serious, but... statistically, deGrom's absence between now and Memorial Day is a likely net loss of ONE GAME. That's all.

Making matters worse, the Post is reporting that Degrom told the coaching staff that he felt pain after he struck out but not when he pitched. Hindsight is 20 20 but when your ace complains of pain you take him out for precautionary purposes. When he pitched in the 4th inning Degrom said the pain reached his biceps. I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Life as a Mets fan.

And WTF??? Why not bring Gsellmann out of the pen?
"If deGrom can go in Cincinnati on Monday and he's 100 percent, fantastic. Bullet dodged. If not, Matt Harvey or Corey Oswalt will likely take his turn, and it's up to them to be worthy of that spot. If deGrom does end up needing time off, it's up to the others in the rotation -- from enigmas like Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler to presumably-steady veteran Jason Vargas -- to dial it up a notch, for the offense to get itself in gear, and for the bullpen to not squander any chances to win valuable games."

Steve Gelbs actually answered me in why Gsellman or Lugo cant replace Matz in the rotation. The answer was that those two were doing so well in the pen, why take them out.

"Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Thursday that he expects Jacob deGrom (elbow) to make his next start Monday against the Reds." - It is directed towards the Mets. Can't afford to lose this guy like with the Noah fiasco last year that could be sniffed out easily before he touched the mound that day.

Oh. Ok. I agree. My fault. I'm used to arguing here lol.

But I would sit him down at least one start to make sure hes ok.

LOL. That's better than a Sarah Huckabee Sanders answer.
Or: Why don't we stop the bleeding on the starting pitching mound? Because there are two great tourniquets in the bullpen.

I stand by my plan: 12 man rotation, they pitch 3 innings each, every 4 days. Familia, Harvey and Ramos in the bullpen. Not enough room- drop Reyes off the roster, then Lagares.

I'd put him on 10 day DL and reassess him at that time. Let him relax and the elbow heal for whatever pain he incurred. Hopefully dodged a bullet

No worries - yes, he should be pined for a minimum of 10 days in my opinion too.

Really dodged a bullet here as of now thankfully!!!
But caught one with Vargas starting today.

ERA up past 23. Makes Harvey look like a Cy Young winner. Maybe Harvey put a hex on him.

Was trying to watch the game on the NBC Sports App and it will not let me log in. Not going to bother now. Please post when the Braves go up by 2 touchdowns.

2 out of 3 games you give up 3 runs in the top of the 1st, and in the middle game with a gem going you have to stomach potentially losing your best pitcher for the year. What a miserable series.

Ok, this Vargas experiment should be over now. He doesn't even throw hard enough for BP...and is fooling no one. Unbelievable, but he's not even as good as Harvey.

Harvey what a disaster.
