Our 2.5 year old Samsung washing machine stopped working. Does not seem to make sense to repair for $200 or more when you can get a new one for $400 or $600. This is for a rental house.

If I had time, I would fix it myself, but the tenants need a washer and can't wait for me to do it in 2 weeks.

Any recommendations on reliable brands? Thanks.

Showing my ignorance (again). Why do the new washing machines take so much longer than older models? It takes an hour plus to do what the old washers did in 30-40 minutes.

It's all about energy savings and using less water. We have a new Maytag washer and dryer. The washer, well, it first "senses" the size of the wash load before filling, and, yes, it takes a loooong time to complete a cycle. Cracks me up to see the "sensing" light lit, though. Longevity? I suspect this electronic "sensor" thingy will be the first to go, likely one month after the warranty runs out.

The reviews online for Whirlpool are terrible, but I guess we all have our favorites.

Can I wash clothes in a Honda Accord?
What is the Rolls Royce of washing machines that some one will surely suggest even though he indicates he on a budget.

thats only because you read the Yugo online reviews.
Consumer Reports recommends the whirlpool WTW4850BW at a tested price of $580

Wash Basin, a wash board and a woman.

(Wha?!!!!)

Get a Speed Queen. Old school top loader, built the way they should be -- to last. Check the reviews. They make all of the commercial coin-op machines that are designed to last forever.

IMHO, most of the new HE machines suck. All of the old appliance companies have been bought out. They just trade on brand loyalty to trick us into buying cheap disposable crap.

they all suck - as they are made in China and designed to be obsolete in a short period. you would be lucky if any current model lasts five years

Sadly I agree. I've had about 3 washers in 5 years. We use it a lot in our household but its ridiculous how often they've broken. Before that we had a simple washer that lasted almost 10 years

Go with a GE if it was manufactured in US. I know they moved a lot of manufacturing back but not sure about their washers. My 14 yr old $200 GE is still running strong with a family of 5...

All Speed Queen still made in America. Still making old school top load washers that will last for decades. Best brand going that no one knows about.

All the big brands are total crap these days, and they try to hide the lack of quality by offering 10 digitally controlled wash cycles that no one ever uses. It's really awful. They took appliances tha used to last 30 years and have them a 5 year lifespan.

Rental unit .... would be inclined to get a very basic non-'he' unit (he = high efficiency) - those are older basic design - but are likely to be less sensitive - less vulnerable to 'operator error' (like somebody using old fashion plain non-he detergent in the unit - because it was the cheapest detergent)

We went with a Speed Queen top loader. $799 delivered. I read eeviws on them and was convinced.

We bought a Maytag Maxima X MHW4200BW for about $800 a year ago and we love it. It is far the best washer we ever had. It is essentially a premium Whirpool, since it is made by Whirpool corporation.

Stay away from Bosch. The gasket gets mold if you do not dry it and class action suit is in play. Bosch washer is made by Siemens

Mine has been running for just over 28 years, now. In the strictest sense, she was free but the maintenance and upkeep expense over the years has been well into the millions.
Lol. Does your washing machine go to your tailgates? If so, either pay me 1 billion dollars or I'm stopping by and telling her you said that.

Pffft. That wouldn't even register on the Dumbass Seismometer.

Mine's been going on and on for 44 years. It most certainly is not free.

I have owned a Frigidaire Front Loading set for the past 8 Years and have had zero issues. Purchased from PC Richards.

We just got an LG one from PC Richards. I haven't used it yet, but the nanny says it's great.

Go with a $400-$500 top loader. The fancy front loaders are fun but too fragile imho. I bought a GE top loader (they still sell a similar model) 8-9 years ago and haven't had a problem with 7 loads a week. My friends and parents have bought front loaders that came with lots of cool technology and have had multiple problems. Just my experience but I'd go with simple and effective.

Front loaders needs less detergent and uses less water, thus saving you $$$
It does need a specific detergent that is labeled with a he ( no clue what "he" stands for )

Yes, and they cost a whole lot more. When is the payoff? I'd need to know that before I invested in an HE model.

HE = High Efficiency. The payoff comes from increased efficiency. Less water, less electricity to run. the front loader mold issue is overblown. just leave the door open when finished washing. Have had our Bosch for almost 10 years and it still works flawlessly.

Consumer reports says... read the text at the link.. some models vary in rating from same manufacturer

Samsung A+ for Top Loading washers? Who is doing the evaluation Rivals or 247? Did Samsung make the Elite 11? Those ratings are worse than some of the high school football player rating services. Maybe I could have Kyle Flood evaluate washers for me?

I'll never buy a Samsung again. Broke after 2.5 years, and it only sees use May-September in a summer rental house. What a joke. I hope to have better results with the new Speed Queen we purchased to replace it.

Gets low priced Whirlpool from PC Richard

This. I have a whirlpool washer and dryer, non HE, as basic as they come these days and they're great. Cheap and reliable. I got mine from lowes, free delivery and haul away of the old ones. I originally bought the higher end, and high efficiency version with all the sensors and what not from best buy, and it never worked properly. They sent the geek squad out, they couldn't help, so I decided rather than exchange I sent it back and went back to basics.

I thought this was another thread about mail order brides when I clicked.

I am disappointed.

Here's the Consumer Reports from Dec 2014 on several different styles.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/12/the-best-washing-machines-of-2014/index.htm

I had a near top of the line Kenmore that last over 15 years...just gave the washer (and matching dryer) away when I got a new set.

And while I showed the consumer reports graphics ratings.. those ratings represent specific models.. not all models. Perhaps there is a specific samsung model that is much better than the one you had. Or maybe you exceeded the weight ratings for a load many times. Could be any number of reasons why a good washer might fail. Example: for a dryer, try an over-full load of wet towels and see if the band that turns the tub snaps. Same could be true for washers and very heavy unbalanced loads. Commercial washers have weight ratings... for good reasons.
