OT: Stock and Investment Talk

EBAY down 8% after hours on earnings. Earnings in line guidance a little light. EBAY won’t be using PYPL soon but it’s still an option through this year IIRC. Wonder if that might be what will pull PYPL below 100. It shouldn’t as much a part of their biz but the CEO did mention it during last earnings call.
The EBAY shift away from PYPL has been talked about for a while and should already be priced into the stock. I owned EBAY for a short time when I thought they were going heavy on NFTs. Then I helped my kid sell some stuff on EBAY and hated the platform/experience. Hard to believe someone hasn’t come up with a better auction platform because EBAY kind of sucks.

It shouldn’t matter and it should be priced in but I’m not so sure it doesn’t have an impact still. The CEO himself said EBAY will be a headwind through the first half IIRC. I still think there could be some downward in sympathy movement.

Overall sentiment is negative and PYPL has been one of the biggest dogs out there so any reason to push down whether reasonable or not can have an impact.

Couldn't have timed this temporary correction any better with bonuses hitting soon! This happens from time to time. No big deal, especially when you have a long time horizon. Bought heavy in 2018 and 2020 and that paid off nicely. Stick to your plan and enjoy!
Exactly! I bet we are the same exact age and we have plenty of time to play the long game

If true, great news for the market! Get it over with quickly and move on. Biden has already indicated that he doesn't care. Yeah, sanctions. Big whoop.

Onwards to the next inflation report and Fed meeting.

Rally coming soon. Stocks cheap compared to bonds:

Charts suggest the stock market is set up for a meaningful rally

**** Joe Biden

A catastrophic withdrawal, nonsensical closures of pipelines, non-stop Russia antagonism and weak leadership set this all up.

I’d say buy the big dip tomorrow (already down 700 points in futures) but Taiwan is next.

I think they are in the position of can't win don't try.
They can win. I know the situation is different from our Rev. war. but nobody gave us a chance. Only 25% of the colonist's supported the Continental army and independence. I have faith. I am an optimist. They will fight and win. My neighbors are from Ukraine, and they are very nice people. I will try to keep positive for them and their 3- and 5-year-old daughters. They just went back to Ukraine to visit family this past summer. I am praying for them. We should all be!

They can't win. They have no real support from the west. If they want save bloodshed and lives lost, just give it up. Putin outsmarted the world. Called everyone's bluff and won.
Hits the nail on the head. They can't win. The military action will be over very quickly. Sounds like Putin wants to demilitarize the country and put someone in charge that is friendly with Russia. Similar to Belarus.

It's over. Time to move on.....

Maybe not in the short run but in the long run a gorilla war is HARD to win. They have been fighting them for 8 years already. Russia could not beat Chechnya; how will they win this? They also lost in Afghanistan.

Being a rag fan, I can understand why you feel this way. LOL

Hard to fathom that we have 3 more years of this administration still to go. From an investment standpoint, can our markets realistically handle this level of incompetence?

In Dec the Ukraine president had opposition leader arrested
Yet all media red and blue describes Ukraine as the purest democracy
Swalwell (had the Chinese hooker spy that also staffed his whole office) said "an attack on a democracy anywhere is an attack on all democracies anywhere " - they love this drama.
Lots of coordinated blue kabuki theater about the "most horrible war" taking place
Its portrayed as the new Cuban Missile Crisis - and media is already blaming it for inflation
Sad part is Russians think of themselves as European -they and Putin wanted to draw closer to Europe and US .
DT was headed that way with them but the Russian psychosis crippled it all
Putin gets aggressive when oil money is rolling in and NATO is buggered
US made sure oil price rose
Its a carnival of fools

Look at Pelosi screwing-up Euro geography. I could laugh/cry

This thread has attracted the "usual suspect" CE posters. Too bad. The posts have become political and nonsensical. Any and all discussion of Ukraine should be limited to and focused on markets impact.

I’ve been posting here for months and have nothing to do with your CE board trash.

Because of people like yourself who shame and censor anyone who disagrees with them — we are in this total mess.

If you haven’t noticed, the stock market & crypto are in freefall FOR GEOPOLITICAL REASONS.

And our president and more importantly, his administration, are very much a player in why this happening.

As an actual liberal, I’m done with you guys telling others what we can and can’t do.

If we weren’t censored for the past 6 months on this thread, told we couldn’t talk about the geopolitical ramifications of the afghan withdrawal or pipeline closures or concerning antagonism or weak leadership — maybe we could have saved other forum members a lot of money. You know the express point of this subthread?

Just... avoid... accusatory domestic politics....

Sadly neither JB or DT could have stopped this. The Afghan withdrawal was irrelevant. If you remember, DT wanted to withdraw in June of 2019, had shredded our NATO allies and IMO wouldn't have authorized any severe sanctions. Damn it, I said I wouldn't get political. An argument can be made on both sides as to whether JB should have authorized his full armory of sanctions before the invasion just as an argument can be made that he shouldn't reveal all his ammunition right from the start. I don't know which path would be better or if neither would have changed the situation. Putin's aspirations for Ukraine did not suddenly develop if you've followed international politics. It has just gotten more adamant with time. The west has been tone deaf to it or lazily felt that he didn't have the balls to actually go through with it. If you're saying that pipelines in America shouldn't have been shut down, I'd agree, IF our intelligence had foreseen this invasion coming. If you're talking about the Nordstream 2 pipeline, then you're wrong and our allies should never have been beholden to Russia for its energy source. Maybe there's a silver lining in that this will hasten development of alternative energy sources.
As for inflation, the seeds were planted when COVID shut down our economy and trillions of dollars were injected by both administrations. The unintended consequences of all this free money fueled the market to exorbitant highs that inevitably was due to correct or crash. The Fed has never been good at preventing inflation and despite its "nonpolitical" stance, it almost always leans toward the political landscape that occupies the White House. Now we just have to hope that the economic and human cost to Russia will cause a regime change before other former Soviet countries are targeted or hope that China isn't emboldened to squeeze Taiwan.
Lastly, the U.S. needs to shift our critical supply chain dependencies out of foreign countries and back to this country. Intel's building of a chip factory is a step in the right direction but unfortunately will take years to come to fruition.

Russia did exactly what the WH said he was going to do. Most here just didn’t believe it. It’s not a buying opportunity yet.

Plenty of the experts didn’t believe it either. And if the WH did believe it then why did they wait so long on the sanctions? That’s the joke of Biden’s strategy. If he had intel that the invasion was coming, and he believed the invasion was coming, why didn’t he immediately start sanctioning Russia?

This Ukraine mess reminds me why I moved out of international investments…I’m 98% domestic. The international markets will get hit much worse than U.S.
Good point! Barely any exposure to international. Crap returns compared to the US for well over a decade, perhaps more.

Ready to buy HUGE today if this artificial dip continues!
