when they return to Rutgers. A practice where they only work on defense and rebounding, no one shoots a basketball. And they come right back to the APC and do the same thing tomorrow. This was unacceptable and Pike needs to get that point across. Step off the plane and head right to the APC and practice.

To bad Stringer isn't still there. She would have them do "D" things until they literally dropped. Not kidding. Oh, and make them wash their own jersey's for those that remember that far back.

I don’t think coaching is at fault for our poor defense / rebounding

This is a roster building issue — which is a different critique of Pike and co.
We are stuck with the roster we have at this point, Pike already constructed it so it is what it is. Did Pike screw it up? Yes. But it is what it is, so coach these guys up and try and do something. The alternative is do nothing, sit back and go 13-18. Gotta try and do something.

Well sure. My larger point is I’m sure the staff is actively trying to fix our issues. Making defense / rebounding a priority when practicing and game-planning

I’m just not sure how much improvement we can reasonably expect on that end given our roster limitations

The ass patting and coddling part of coaching this year should be over. It's now time for fire and brimstone coaching and starting to hold players accountable. I no longer want to hear there's a lot of guys hurting in there and we'll get better.

Which is easier to do, play smarter on offense or play better on defense?

Bad shots and the wrong guys taking shots at the wrong time. Completely self-inflicted. We've seen it every game this year. 100% on Pike and relatively easy to fix.

The Alabama staff made it clear to Cliff what his role is. There are no post ups for Cliff at Alabama. That staff coaches the players on offense.

Then why should we bother watching another game or commenting about them on the board or Pike even coaching them for that matter? The roster has been constructed and the season is over, right??? I get what you’re saying but Pike and the team have 22 games left, they can either keep doing what they are doing (which is not nearly good enough) or Pike can lead the way and try and do something different with this team and the current roster he constructed. We know what the definition of insanity is, continuing to do the same the rest of this season will possibly get us a worse record than last season’s 15-17. Think about that. I am not Pike, I don’t have the answers, but he sure as hell gets paid to try and find the answers and figure it out.

It’s possible there is nothing he can do about it, but he and the team sure need to try. This looked like a team going through the motions. It’s possible this is what we get all year, but Pike needs to try and change that while we still have 22 games left.

Pike has to look in the mirror. He coached his worst game since he got here. It was obvious they were trying to go down low or exploit Royal against Jordan , then Zack , then Grant. He watched for 10 points Royal got against ZACK WHO DIDNT EVEN TEY TO SLIDE HIS FEET, and couldn’t keep Royal in front of him. The other bigs also found themselves wide open for dunks or uncontested layups. There was no attempt to send the whole team to the backboards when they missed they got second chance points. He didn’t try zone enough , didn’t mix up his defense and the guys looked like they found they were allergic to going and getting the ball , a loose ball or a rebound. Maryland pressured Ohio State and contested every shot and Ohio State folded like a cheap suit. This has to be least resistance a Rutgers team has ever put up.
Attempts to get back in the game resulted in turnovers. Down 7 with 7 minutes left and we either finally get 4 stops or Ohio State turnovers , and we proceed to turn the ball over 4 straight trips including Dylan and ACE each having one. The lack of smarts , effort and simple fundamentals and lack of attempting rebounding was despicable .
Every sub Pike made today did nothing and usually backfired. It was not his best day. J. Williams did almost nothing today , Jordan nothing after his 2 threes in the first 4 minutes , which means doing zero the rest of the way , Zack was terrible again . PJ gets beat easily on a drive for a layup , he wasn’t the only one , and never plays again. JMike has become a bad defensive player and again gives you nothing.
Were they not motivated enough? Not explained how important this game was ? The lack of hustle , smarts , and urgency was shockingly bad today. That is all on Pike. His worst coached game. So so disappointing.

immediately Grant came in and shoots a 3....than Lathan takes a 3.....where is the accountability

I couldn't believe those shots. Unreal. Clearly the staff has not explained to each player what their role is.

The possession where Lathan wildly drove to the basket is what really drove me crazy. Initially Ace had the ball in the corner and Lathan didn't move, which allowed Lathan's defender loiter in the area to help if Ace drove. It basically forced Ace to pass the ball to Lathan. Dylan had a reaction (justifiably) as that shit show of a play was happening.

Any other coach in the Big 10 could get better results with this roster.
Whatever limitations this roster has we will never know, because they are being so poorly coached.
It is clearly evident on game day. The team shows up and Pike rolls the ball out.
It’s a terrible product.
When a coach has the best player on the floor he should win a majority of those games.
This is 100% Pike from roster to game day and everything in between.

Pike can coach D. For whatever reason these guys aren’t understanding the rotation concepts. It doesn’t hurt that they often get beat at the point of attack putting a spotlight on the bad sliding.

Maybe just go to zone which might hide some of those flaws and live with relatively open looks which they are getting anyway.

Do we have local sports media? Maybe they should ask something this obvious (since it happens every game). Maybe we could ask why we never seem to box out for a rebound, too.

Wait ... you mean Sommerville shouldn't be trying to drive to the basket 1 on 3 from outside the three-point line?!?!?
He got pulled immediately after that. These are all learning experiences. He was allowed to do that in high school and AAU. Doesn’t work at this level.

Don’t mind the Grant 3. It was within flow.

Somerville 1-3 with a horrid Euro step attempt. Please

He should have been told over a month ago that his ass belongs in the paint and with his back to the basket. That's on the coaching staff.

Pikiell stated on a pregame radio interview that practice was focused on defense the prior week to todays game.Time to come up with a different corrective action plan.

Thanks for the info, didn’t hear the interview. That makes me feel even worse that it was emphasized and they looked no better, they may have looked worse. These guys just can’t defend, just like last year’s team could not play offense this year’s team can not play defense. Unfortunately, it is what is (hate that cliche), but it’s true, it looks like we are in for another long year as far as the wins and losses results are concerned.

Agreed 100% about Royal, do we have anyone who can slide their feet and stay in front of their man? Dylan seems like he does it, Derkack at times, but everyone on this team gets beat off the dribble and then no one comes over to help, and let’s not even mention the concept of helping the helper with this team. They are utterly lost and befuddled on defense. As bad as last year’s offense was, this year’s defense is equally bad and possible worse.

Try hard-coaching guys that can leave the minute they get their panties in a bunch. Forget the guys who will be multi-millionaires in June.

It was inevitable that opposing coaches would trap Dylan to get the ball out of his hand requiring the other players to create offense which they can’t. Pike should have foreseen this and had a contingency plan ready. He and his staff don’t have one. Coaching malpractice. Without quick ball movement, screens, and other forms of scheming to get Dylan and Ace open - we will lose most games.

Why can’t we mix in occasional trips up the court with JWill bringing the ball up or initiating the offense up top, get the ball to Dylan on the wing to try and counter how defenses are playing Dylan when he has the ball up top. Put Ace in the post on Dylan’s side, this allows Dylan to create from the wing and possibly have an easier path to the basket than what is seeing now or he can play a 2 man game with Ace. Ace can catch it in the post, Ace can set a screen for Dylan and roll, Dylan can shoot a three if it’s there for him, Ace can go the 3 point line and Dylan can dish to him, PJ Hayes in the corner and Dylan or Ace can kick to him for a 3 if the defense collapses on them, Dylan can drive to the hoop if it’s available. This is a pretty easy concept, but I don’t feel like we have seen it much. Obviously Dylan will predominantly initiate the offense up top, but once in a while when things get stale can we mix it up some?

He should have kept that comment to himself after what we watched and tired again this week. Either the students don’t care or are incapable or the teacher is inept….I thinks it’s a combo of both.
