I didn’t think much of the hire too but he’s done a nice job in year 3 and they’re ranked in the CFP as well. Close losses to UW and USC. Fifita has really helped them.
Still would like to see more than this year though just like GS or any other coach. Take the year for what it is and enjoy it but consistency is what matters most.
Why? Why reward mediocrity? Why not extend when we take the next step--upsetting a team we are not supposed to beat.

I’m rewarding for the progress. When he took over to now. We have 4 Ls. Two are against top 4 teams. The other is locked for a share of the B1G west. Wisc on the road pre-injuries isn’t a bad loss.

Who has Franklin beat this year that makes him more attractive? If you think he can bring all the PSU players with him, sure. But everything you said about GS wins this year could be said about Franklin.
I like Schiano and hope he can improve the team but no extension until he straightens out the QB situation. That means maybe by the end of the 2024 season. He has to make a difficult decision, maybe Surace is the answer, Nova was a true FR, or another QB from the portal or Winsatt but he needs to make vast improvement.

He will get his extension because the team is showing progress in going to a bowl and maximizing the talent onhand. There are no gimmes in the big ten. Every big ten victory is significant, as was our victory over VT.

I tend to think there's a better than 50% chance some contract adjustment happens even with 4 years left because that's what ADs do..
I saw the headline above (it's a paywall article but you see the headline), it reminded me about Chip Kelly's situation at UCLA a couple years ago. IIRC he went into year 4 of his first deal with just like 1 year left on initial 5 year deal. They didn't extend him saying he needed 4 years on his deal at all times. His first 3 seasons were losing seasons. He went into that year without 4 years left and went 8-4/6-3 and they've given him a couple extensions since and even then they didn't seem crazy over the top. His contract just goes out 2027 currently (only 4 years) and his buyout if he's fired before Dec 2023 is 8.5M and if he's fired before Dec 2024 is a little over 4M. Kelly was 9-4/6-3 last year and is currently 6-4/3-4 this year.
I don't know that I believe in this tact of always needing 4 years on a deal. Coaches leave all the time anyhow so what are you guaranteeing? With portal, players can leave any time as well so what are you guaranteeing from their end? Portal also allows you to reshape a roster quicker so any incoming new coach can make additions quickly regardless of 4 years or not.
I remember reading some years ago about some Montana coach getting let go without being fired. The school just let the contract expire and didn't renew. I thought to myself don't lower level coaches have recruit and retain players as well. But the schools down at that level probably don't have the money to be paying buyout after buyout so this is more financially reasonable way of doing it. I don't think there's any mass exodus of players because of it. Higher level schools would be better served taking a page of out this kind of book and lean in that direction.

None of this matters. We’re bowling for the first time since 2014. We won 6 for the first time since 2014. We’ve lost to teams with more resources and support than what we have. They’ve gotten every ounce of productivity that this team was capable of. We will continue to get better. The ‘24 recruiting class is another significant step in the right direction.
Yes why would we ever want a coach who’s is consistently ranked in the top 10 and recruits out of the same location at a much higher level? It’s unfortunate that we have fans like you. You wonder why we have been so bad for so long when you look at this year and believe anyone deserves an extension. How quickly you forget how absolutely horrific we were last year. Outside of the lack of talent on this team and his inability to run any type of am offense.. His teams still undisciplined and his X and o’s and timeout usage are horrific.

You discount GS wins because they are against teams he is supposed to beat but gives credit to Franklin for doing the same. The fact Franklin’s name is coming up is because he can’t beat teams on their level. Did he have top 10 teams at Vandy? Born on 3rd base.
Mike Lockley, Maryland, turned Maryland around in 3-4 years, third year 2021 7-6, fourth year 2022 8-5. He didn’t get a contract extension until this 2023, after two years of 7 wins or more. Maryland was worse than Rutgers, we use to count them as a win in the past. Lockley proved himself with two winning seasons. He went from 4 million to 5.5 million to next year 6 million. A smart man wait to see a trend, two years, before giving an extension, again no one giving Schiano a better opportunity after yesterday loss. No problem waiting after 2024 season.
It would really be stupid to give Schiano a raise for only a six win season. I don’t think we get to six next year if he doesn’t correct the QB. Six is his high and 4-5 will be the norm in the future without a decent QB. Almost all the Big Ten teams, see Iowa, have great defense, it’s how many points can the offense generate.

Good point but I think most feel that he got lucky with the QB transfer and the rest of the team hasn’t improved. MD is known for their October collapse. It will be interesting to see what happens after TT leaves. It’s like when IU lost Penix Jr.
Well, Schiano got to get lucky (a real Qb) to get a few million more. I agree Maryland fall back but still ahead of Rutgers because he will have three seasons of 7 wins or more and better recruits for the last three years.

Is a bowl really that huge of an accomplishment? 86 teams make a bowl game this year. In year 4 that should be expected not celebrated. I get with the talent level that it a big accomplishment with this team but in year 4 with the portal and roster turnover the bar should be higher.
If the team tanks next year, the team tanks. What happens year to year doesn’t bother me, because I’m excited for where we’re going to be 5 years from now. Next year, we could take a step back, but should take a significant step forward in two years.
It should be celebrated because we are doing it playing one of the most difficult schedules in America. We’re not losing to Cincinnati and Houston anymore. We’re losing to Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, programs with significant resource advantages. We beat everyone we we’re supposed to beat, and that’s the best we can do.
I wonder if the recent reporting that his record is worse than the fired previous coach’s record was has something to do with it, even at the staggering cost.
This is why it’s foolish to give long term contracts.
