I believe Dooley was my first choice but had no issues with Pikiell, didn't call it the cheap route or anything like that. Good coaches come from the lower levels all the time.

So far so good, hopefully he keeps up this trajectory especially for the fans here who are much more die hard and have stuck it out way beyond a typical pedestrian fan like myself.

Interesting/happy to see that some of the posters I look for on here were spot on with their analysis

IM(most)HofO's most of the die-hard, long-time guys, are pretty good with this stuff. It's the hit-and-run guys, the moniker-changers, and the over-the-top-blowhards (guys who harp on the same thing over-and-over-and-over-again), who are TYPICALLY off-base with most things.

I think in fairness to everyone who posted in this thread, I think we have to go back to where we were after Jordan was axed...I mean some serious rock bottom after 3 years and nightly embarrassments on the court. I voted cautiously optimistic myself but to those who who didnt like the hire, I can certainly see why they had concerns given the sexiness factor of Pike. Remember the Hurley stuff had just gone down days earlier. Pike is proving what an incredible coach he truly is, just needed to upgrade his school.

Not sure if I voted on this originally, but I recall telling my gf at the time Pike was hired that I was impressed by what he did at SB, and while I didn't know much else about him, I felt he was a good hire.

Boy, was RUFANFORLIFE really wrong with his comment. He guess he still is away forever.

GRF also ripped the hire of Pikiell.

This was a good read.

I think this was also posted before he filled out his coaching staff. From what I remember I was cautiously optimistic about the hire at first, but then thrilled once I found out he was bringing in Knight and Hobbs as part of his staff.

I don't remember, but knowing me I voted cautiously optimistic. Amazed only 15 percent voted for disappointed or discouraged. With our fan base, I would have expected more.

And it's so cool to see somebody I truly despise sharing the planet with be among the first and most vociferous to bitch about it. I just can't help smirking about that.

Beyond discouraged. This was probably the worst of the hires we could have made outside of Cluess. If the America East is the best we can do, we don't belong in the Big Ten.
Ha, good thing you are not an athletic director.

To be discouraged or disappointed at this point you either have to know nothing about the game, or be just plain stupid.

RUFANFORLIFE with the coldest of takes - love digging up old threads.

Anybody want to find one of those thread of folks arguing if Eddie should come back for year 4? Those were some doozies.

I vote this to be "post of the year"....or is it re-post of the year?? Either way, classic entertainment looking back at some of the comments!!

I like Pike!!

For whatever reason, I didn’t post much in this or voted in the poll, but I remember being cautiously optimistic mainly because he had HC experience and had led a massive rebuild - even though it was at a lower level. At the time, I felt we needed a coach who understood how massive a project this was.

For the record I was one of the 24.7% Happy, but then I tend to be optimistic when it comes to change. My only insight was that I knew someone who played against Steve in HS/Prep and he said he was the kind of player the could ruin your day.
Interesting to note since spring 2016:
Illinois - John Groce - GONE
Indiana - Tom Crean - GONE
Iowa - Fran McCaffery - still there
Maryland - Mark Turgeon - GONE
Michigan - John Beilein - GONE
Michigan State - Tom Izzo - still there
Minnesota - Richard Pitino - GONE
Nebraska - Tim Miles - GONE
Northwestern - Chris Collins - GONE
Ohio State - Thad Matta - GONE
Penn State - Pat Chambers - GONE
Purdue - Matt Painter - still there
Rutgers - Steve Pikiell - still there
Wisconsin - Greg Gard - still there
Bonus
UCLA -Steve Alford -GONE
USC - Andy Enfield -still there

Including RU 10 B1G teams changed coaches and 4 of the more successful programs have the same leader.
