Pony up or Shut Up

What do you think the Yankees do with their ticket money?
You do pay player salaries.

CFB/CBB need to drop the fake-amateur athlete notion they use to prey on fans for "donations".
Nah, the tickets and merch are the only $ the Yankees ask for. College you buy the tickets and the merch and THEN they want you to pay the players.

The biggest problem is the coach doesn’t have enough talent. He’s taken us to the NCAA tournament after a long drought. That shows he has what it takes to make it here.
Al,

He took us twice - once was aplay in game where we lost. He won ONE game and blew a huge opportunity to advance to the Sweeet 16. Even in his years of success, the mind numbing substitutions and the lack of a coherent offense or consistent three point threats were on display. He is not cut out for this wild west of the new college basketball era.

Pike will be making 3.5 million for this mess. Let him increase his donation first.

Well luckily they are moving towards a revenue sharing model.
Exactly what you want.

To be fair - colleges want you to pay extra for everything.
They literally demand extra "donations".
There is even a fund for donations to pay for private jet fuel for recruiting.

It would be interesting analysis - what would the AD have to price tickets at if they removed all "mandatory donations".

Like every other entertainment - price it into the ticket price.

Get a life bro.

I’m fairly confident that Geo has done far more for this university and athletic department than you ever will.
I’m just saying….people need to stop complaining about NIL and how it’s changed college basketball when our guy Geo was a huge voice in the movement toward NIL.

Geo can speak for himself but it seems all he wanted was for players to be able to parlay their fame to make some spending money. I don't think he was advocating the free agency and the total disruption that NIL has become.

It's disappointing that the world of college sports is dragging their feet on reigning this stuff in. One easy thing that should be done immediately is making players sit a year if they transfer.

Next month starts Free Agency, or the transfer portal, or whatever you want to call it, and Pike needs all the resources he can get. We need impact players, not schlubs who take up space. Impact players cost 💲, which we don’t have enough of. Maryland fans ponied up and the majority of their scoring is from transfers.

Maryland Transfers Point totals From Rutgers Game
Rodney Rice- transfer from VT - 19 pts
Selton Miguel - transfer from South Florida - 17 pts
Ja’ Kobi Gillespie - transfer from Belmont - 14 pts

Our transfers are not contributing enough because we chose from the bargain bin. They are too inconsistent. The performance on Court is a reflection of our support or lack thereof and We are reaping what we sowed.

I knew we were F’d as soon as we lost Cliff. Only to watch him languish on the bench. This year, we must hold on to Somerville, and add the appropriate complementary players. Get the right players and we can get back to the tournament next year.
Heres the issue, why should the fan base have any confidence that even if given an unlimited bank roll that he even has the ability to get anything out of them?

We had one of the most expensive rosters in the B1G this year. NIL wasnt the issue, coaching was

Just curious, but what specifically do they like? I know he picked the program up off the mat that was down in the basement, but he is currently shoving us back down the stairs of the basement as we speak with an incredibly disappointing season with two generational talents. What do they currently like about Pike and the current trajectory of the program? Is it they just like him on a personal level? He’s a great guy, no debating that. But what do they like about him currently coming off this season and the previous two as a coach of a Big 10 program?
They like pike the person. Hes a great great dude. But two things can be true. You can be a great person and a bad basketball coach.

Is more NIL going to get more than two five stars? Is it going to run a simple out of bounds play? Is it going to stop the giggling during the alma mater after a pathetic Iowa kicks in our teeth? Is more NIL going to stop the goofing off and lack of focus in warmups. I’m sorry that’s the coach. I know he isn’t going anywhere but even if you give him more talent the lack of structure, accountability and discipline will drag it down. Pike used to stress that. He’s lost the ship and I say it started with the Bless the Rains fiasco in Minne a couple years back.

If you are not making any sort of contribution toward NIL you are the problem.
I mean sharing your credit card or check with the collective.
All full up on bloviating and key board bluster, thanks.
Would have been nice if Athletics leaned into the thing more.
But John and his team makes it really easy and it doesn't take much.

This was all happening with or without Geo.

Get a life and stop trying to break down one our our student athletes who’s done a ton for Rutgers and continues to do a lot for the NJ basketball community.

Just saying.

Also NIL really picked up post Geo, so your post was pretty dumb lol.

Except the ask won't stop. Everyone will have the revenue sharing so schools will still want the above and beyond to have the advantage.

It would be interesting to see. So many who give to a school aren't giving to the athletic part as well.

While talent is extremely important, this season has been more about the bird brains running the show.

He has the best offensive ability in the center position, that we have had for years, including Cliff

Maybe, over time, he can get better defensively, remembering he is a true freshman
Yes....but is he going to get longer and jump higher.

For Lathan to work in B1G...needs to be a capable perimeter shooter, improve a TON on D, get in better cardio shape (along with others) and be relentless going after loose balls and rebounds.

I don't see it.

One of the best posts ever!

He still has been our best offensive center in
a long time
And is a freshman who’s game offensively will probably get better
If we lost him I doubt we replace that

Hold back NIL monies unless Pike is let go, and then see how long it takes for a buyout.

He’s a work in progress, which we can’t afford to lose.

It isn’t the alignment, it’s the alignees. This team is lacking leadership which Cliff would have provided. Had we recruited the caliber of kids that Maryland recruited, this would have been a much different season. Our leadership is literally coming from Freshman. How is anyone surprised with the way things are turning out?

He is not remotely as close to what Myles and Cliff were offensively as centers. Lathan has a tool box that the others didn't have. Lathan has every tool except a hammer. Myles and Cliff had hammers and could finish.

Lathan is stuck on 3 dunks. Cliff had 51 last year.

You already did this thread weeks ago.
Literally every post on this board is about our lack of NIL.

Thread 'Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season' https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/t...t-reason-for-our-disappointing-season.288419/

Do you even watch the games or just see a loss and start an NIL thread?
Can you give one actual on-court critique or improvement opportunity that isn't "We need NIL to get better players"?

It’s not just poor NIL. We’ve had a few recruiting misses the last few years (Gavin, Baye flipping, Simpson regressing), we didn’t become a real brand until recently so Pike was still recruiting diamonds in the rough (Wolf, Chol) that just weren’t ready for this level - this forced us to basically bring 9 new guys into the team, many of them young, so there was no real chemistry nor ability to play college defense against grown men. And when they finally looked like they figured out how to play together, injuries and illness took a toll.

In the future, we’re going to need to return at least 60-70% of the core each year to have success. You develop the freshman and they play as they’re ready. You hit the portal for immediate needs and gaps - not to replace your 1/3 of your roster.

At this point, it’s all about the Big Ten tournament. Last night sucked, but these guys are still capable of beating anyone.

How do you know he doesn't donate?
99% of the board doesn’t donate now or ever. My proof is how much NIL is bashed daily. How we don’t have a BIG TEN roster and everyone knows this and everyone understands how NIL and forming a roster are alligned but Pike gets bashed for HIS inability to get alumni and you die hards to donate LMFAO. If you look back at fund raising efforts in the past Big Build as one example yes the goal was reached but politicians had to give us 1/4 of the money and individual donors to that fund was very low. We simply do not have fans that care about the program enough to spend any of their money on making the team better. The problem is other fanbases do have e that type of fan and donors. We have excuses and shitting on coaches and players. We are experts on giving opinions and shitting on our own. We have two lottery pics on our team and maybe 3 more players who belong here. Everyone knows this yet bash the players and coaches anyway. We got what we deserve.

The winning teams will want to maintain their advantage and understandably so. What this fanbase needs to realize is that kids were getting paid all along, but it happened under the table. That’s how Maryland, UConn and others won their Championships. Rutgers has won zero Championships because we never played the game the way others did.

Cliff wasn’t vocal enough to be a leader. Pike even said last years team was the quietest he’s ever had. Go watch Geo’s games. Nearly every break in the action you’d see him coaching up guys. That’s leadership. Plus, you had Paul, Ron and Caleb - even Cam, who led differently, but were also leaders.

I see what you did there. Hahahaah

He has a state of the art practice facility. So that should tell you all you need to know. Shiny new digs mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.
Just our luck that we go years and years with no practice facility and then when we finally get one it loses its significance within a couple years.

We have one of the most expensive rosters yes BUT none of that money to get Ace and Harper came from the fanbase. The fanbase NIL got us the rest of the roster. So with that logic NIL got us players that do not belong on this roster. We have a roster full of players who are not Big Ten players. The two 5 atars are here because of separate non RU NIL deals. Pike had no money to go get a real Big Ten team.

You think one out of every seven folks in the RAC, little kids too, has $1000 to burn?
I have no idea what people in the RAC can do or not do. But I look in the RAC parking lot, and it’s not like everyone is driving Fords, Dodges, and Chevy’s. There are some impressive automobiles out there. So when people cry poor, I’m calling BS.
IMO, we have the means to support a winner. We lack the desire.

Season tickets are already expensive. Wouldn’t it make sense to kick in an extra $1000 to ensure we have something worth watching?

Al our mandatory seat donation and ticket prices are not expensive if you compare it to other Big Ten teams.

Just our luck that we go years and years with no practice facility and then when we finally get one it loses its significance within a couple years.
The practice facility matters. UConn, Villanova, and our competition also have very nice practice facilities. But UConn also has significant NIL support that we don’t have.

If you do a search for B1G power forwards and centers and sort by def rebounding, offensive rebounding and blocks he doesn't belong

Al our mandatory seat donation and ticket prices are not expensive if you compare it to other Big Ten teams.
True, Even our parking is a joke, especially on the football side, compared to what other Big Ten schools pay.

Still, people have to lay out a good amount for season tickets even though they are less than other schools. So the point is lay out a little more to ensure you have something worth watching.

Just our luck that we go years and years with no practice facility and then when we finally get one it loses its significance within a couple years.
Yep. Crazy how that works. But can’t say that it was used to our advantage by any team that currently resides in that building while there was significance. . One program went into a death spiral upon completion and another shouldn’t have been included in the design in the first place.
