Basketball Rutgers Basketball holds off Saint Peter's with late defensive surge

Outside shooting is still very poor from this team for the 3,785 season in a row

Win or lose, this shitty performance is on Pike.
Disagree. The team was making young mistakes in the first half. That got corrected at halftime, which is good coaching. The play in the second half was much better.

I actually think the coaches did a good job overall and the team will learn a ton from this game.

Also, I was very impressed with our player’s ability to tolerate what seemed like a lot of hard fouls through the second half without getting rattled. Lot of young players playing with good maturity tonight. To me, since we got rattled in the first half, but not in the second, that’s again due to really good coaching.

Actually, Mildone, I would have to agree with you. Because I was unable to watch the game on TV, I was relying on Internet updates and stats. You are so right. We played like Rutgers in the second half and only gave up 23 points. Now that is excellent defense.

With that said, it still baffles me how Pikiell's teams always start slow and don't play well in the first half. Somehow, some way he needs to change that. We need to start fast, especially against this kind of competition.

Impressive composure. It's extremely frustrating playing a game like that but it didn't seem like any of the players let it get to them. Dylan and Derkack draw a lot of contact

And you thought we'd lose. LOL! Quite frankly, I was sweating bullets too!!!

Yeah that Randolph kid brought back memories of that Minny game where they had one kid who was knocking down 3s with his eyes closed. I’m glad we found a way and it was probably wasn’t a bad thing for some leadership roles to take shape in closing the game out. Dylan is still a frosh and that showed at the end with that traveling turnover. Jordan and Zach played like our veteran leaders and we’re going to need them for that.

BTW, SP gave Seton Hall all they could handle. SH only beat the peacocks by 4 points.

Yes- And then Seton Hall lost to Fordham. At home. It’s not that Fordham is vastly improved. They suck. SJU beat them 92-60. It seems that Seton Hall just isn’t good either.

Thx! Glad I could see that. Is BTN+ always on YouTube or is this a rogue stream?
Rogue stream, you didn’t see the random Indian lady sitting there after the game was over? LOL

Not joking, I almost pissed myself when it happened.

We have two NBA lottery pics, pretty sure all these games will be easy to track down somewhere

So we beat an in state rival by 10 despite them shooting great from 3 in the first half, without one of our two most talented players... sounds like no reason to panic! Lots of great tape to continue coaching guys up, and we closed it out like good teams should with that 11-0 finish.

Great result. Back at it tomorrow in practice!

The games on streaming services are always harder to find free streams for vs games on cable

I think this game is actually going to help this team get better. Doesn't hurt to have to find a way to survive a scare without one of your two best players early in the season

Defense was much better the second half. Some nice moments on offense. Only stagnant for a few possessions there. Good outcome. Easily could have folded there.

Avoided disaster. Hard fought physical game is a great early season test so it's a good thing in the long run

Derkack and Martini showed up late when it mattered most along with Harper leading the way

Surprised we saw so little Hayes but Pike pulled the right strings at halftime

Totally agree. Never felt like we were going to lose. Top team in the state against arguably the worst, we’re going to get a lot of best punches along the way.

Didn't look like a travel live or on the scoreboard replay. Did the TV broadcast show a travel?

Our defense played a very good second half. St. Peter's scored 42 in the first half but only 23 in the second. We outscored they 38-23 in half number two. I feel we need to run more plays for Hayes. He should get more than 4 shots in a game. He also led us with 7 rebounds in only 20 minutes.

I listened as well. Geo does a good job.
Someone I know pointed out that Geo reacts to what he sees without commenting in a way that indicates he knows the audience did not see what he saw.

I did not notice that myself.. though, hearing that comment, I realized it was true.. but somehow did not bother me. I think I use my imagination to "see" while listening.

yes, i noticed that as well, but had no issue w/ it, he provides such good insight that most color guys don't because he knows Pike so well

Yeah it was a travel. He gave up his dribble and moved his pivot foot. He thought they were intentionally fouling him to stop the clock.

I saw her and was wondering what was going on. Pretty funny. Wonder how long it went on? I turned it off after a minute or so.

Seton Hall also took 37 free throws - probably the amount we should have gotten.
