Tango Two posted the article on the football board. RU basketball fans should read if they haven't yet. We talk about the need for NIL $,here's a golden opportunity for so called small donors to do their part. No excuses.

Eh. To be a Debbie downer (while also a realist)…
First of all, I’ll donate for sure….

So, we shake the trees here and after a couple months we get to 1 million.
What is this really doing? If 100% was used towards MBB NIL (which it won’t be) that would get us a better than average but not elite center for 1 year. Big whoop.

The University needs to invest big if they want real support, both in terms on fans in seats during good and not so good times, and with donations.

It’s not and has never been a chicken or the egg scenario as it relates to college athletics. The university goes first and has to put out a big winner first, as I believe happened in 92.5%+ of all the top 40 athletic departments that exist.

in addition to however much of this match campaign gets earmarked for basketball, they will also have:
$1M from player’s era tournament
~$3M from revenue sharing

"University" = NJ taxpayers
NJ taxpayers paying too many taxes and are leaving the state
NOV 2025 we elect a governor
Campaign topic 1 for Republican candidate will be reduce spending and lower taxes
Greg Schiano flying in a helicopter wouldn't be a bad thing to show on campaign ad.

The problem is the old heads on here refuse to give a penny until we have a president and AD

And even at that point they still believe you can succeed in college basketball by contributing the minimum aka ticket sales and concessions

Wrong … never going to happen… college basketball and college athletics in this era will not reward teams who give it the ole college try and try to Hoosiers their way to success

It’s an arms race and while you need a sharpshooter at the end of the rifle (aka a good coach and AD)… you aren’t winning unless your holding a high level weapon or weapons

Most of the big spenders in college athletics have Republican governors

It’s an arms race…. And the university has a yearly budget of 5 to 6 million and recent article talked about the endowment doubling under Holloway.
Invest in athletics like you never really have before RU!

FWIW..... Bill Spadea a Republican candidate is dead against any sports funding to Rutgers. He already has spoken on that during his years on 101.5. He would definately not help RU's sports cause. I don't know how Jack Ciattarelli stands on this.

Again it doesn’t appear political party negatively impacts any schools we’re competing with funding wise

The governor of Ohio, Illinois, Pa, Wisconsin, Maryland, etc don’t seem to be preventing their universities from funding

Not to mention the southern schools

1. You are looking at the past
2. Some/most states dont have net loss pooulation because of taxes
3. Practically no other school losses more money on athletics than RU

Gotta love how they stick to the win first nonsense and ignore that the landscape has changed and that mantra just leaves you in a worse spot now.

And we know they won’t give when they are winning. Donations only went up a little bit when basketball was winning and in the tournament and we’ve never seen the big money come out when football was in lots of bowl games in Greg’s first stint.

Bowl games? 6-6 and 7-5 for 5 years in a row doesn’t move the needle.
Win 10+ back to back with a realistic shot at doing it again…. And the stadium will be sold out and donations will be double what they are today.

The deeper we get into this era the more and more it looks like we would’ve been better off either A) staying in AAC or B) joining the ACC which is a little more our speed budget wise and probably would’ve yielded more competitive products albeit lesser competition
Definitely more in line with ACC for sure

See Va Tech NIL struggles

This shouldn't be made political. Don't give then don't bitch,it's simple. All the rest is all a bunch of excuses. Leave the Big ?? Now you're being a complete ass. More than 78000 applications to RU NB ,being a BIG Ten school had a lot to do with that. It's a fact ,confirmed by top Admissions people. Don't give then don't bitch about the lack of NIL. Oxymorons.

I didn’t say leave the big 10 so chill out on your pedestal buddy

I am a donor and will continue to be because I’m not tone deaf

My point was the majority of our fanbase mentality would be better suited in those leagues

We were never invited to the ACC. Sorrycuse, SPitt and Fredo all saw to that. AAC???? You gotta be kidding me. I and most of the rest of RU's fanbase would be gone. This board would be dead.

Everyone gets revenue sharing that $ does nothing to give us an edge

The schools that don’t need it are getting it too
non power conference schools, even basketball only schools, do not bring in enough revenue to be able to take advantage of the full $20.5M that is allowed to be shared. seton hall for example is not going to have more than $3M to share with its basketball players. the B1G and SEC tv contracts dwarf basically all others

Why the excuses to not give ? It’s a million dollar match. We as a whole are going to look incredibly bad if we don’t get the full million. Recruits are watching on this and our competition is as well.

Supposedly the $1 million not distributed equally to all players so careful who gets what
You spend the majority of your day after day here on this website. You should be the pied piper of this match. Your biggest hobby is to spend hours of your life recapping a game we all saw. How can you possibly not get behind any effort where Rutgers sports can have an easier time having full rosters of Big Ten players. You def are weird.

Does James Franklin travel via Horse and Buggy from the middle of PA to Northern Virginia or the Carolinas.....How does Iowa cover and comb through the cornfields ?? They have surveillance imagery that identifies the body fat of potential offensive lineman from over 20,000 feet in the air!!!

Can you navigate the So Cal terrain of mudslides and roads out, due to flooding, wildfires and just plain traffic?? Or do the assistant coaches just waste 3 hours 1 way in a car, to go see kids play??

I always wondered how RU never invested on the Iowa infrared imagery, so they can find 2 to 4 300 pound offensive lineman in towns that no one has ever heard of. At least they made the investment into their program......!!

I think the revenue NJ creates is slightly higher than Iowa, so a helicopter that might be donated for free use by Schiano, isn't on someone's balance sheet......but if it excites you more than Kenpom or Bart, go for it.....😂😂

A candidate can say NJ taxpayers paid $200 million the last 4 years paying for Rutgers athletics.
The VAST majority of the money that Rutgers gets from the State is to pay for the health benefits & fringe benefits that Rutgers State employees are entitled to under their contract. Taxpayers are not paying for the Athletic department they are paying for State Employees.

again i didnt advocate for us to be there i would be off the board too

my point was there is a large contingent of fans that behave like that is where they would rather be because then they dont have to be asked to donate and can just be happy participating in sports

Typical of those that refuse to donate to set a high bar that can’t be achieved unless fans donate. Keep your head buried in the sand. & think it can be done organically. It’s a free country you’re entitled to be badly mistaken.

Taxpayers fund roughly 20% of RUs budget so your numbers don’t add up unless RU spent a billion dollars on athletics the last 4 years.
If RU athletics was told it had to be self sufficient 100% of the loss would be savings to the State of NJ, not 20%.

Listen.....I obviously want the investment. I am a fan and a season ticket holder. I am just telling it like I see it.

The fact that NJ taxpayers will be indirectly paying college athletes is not going to sit well with most, especially a SHU fan 😃

With all due respect.....this response shows you really don't get it.
I don't get it at all.....RU has spent 50+ years worrying about what the residents of NJ may think and it's gotten RU where exactly??

Every meaningful moment of RU sports has been made by legislation that pushed the envelope way beyond what anyone believed should have been done.....

"You can't invest into the expansion of the football stadium"!!!

You can't create a tax credit to help build a world class basketball facility for players"!!!

"You can't invest into Greg Schiano again. He's asking for too many items, we can't afford that!!"

This is the cost to invest into being in an elite conference and elite revenue. That doesn't happen by sitting on your hands or worrying about what some taxpayers say or don't......if the taxpayers don't like it and leave, here comes 15 more new residents into the state to replace them and their tax payments.

I'm interested in knowing how you think RU landed in this position or would you rather be where we were 15 to 20 years ago......in the old Big East or AAC, playing East Carolina or Temple??

And in come the advocates to wait for success to take a single dollar out of their pocket above the minimum required

We have 1 10 win season in this millennium... so were waiting for something that has never happened to begin taking our heads out of the sand? Idk how nobody cant see what athletic departments and fanbases that give a shit about winning can impact it in a meaningful way

Look at the 0 to hero teams this year in football and basketball

Indiana SMU Arizona State in football

Louisville Missouri St Johns in hoops

Yes they put good coaches in place but those coaches are fighting with a sniper rifle not a pea shooter

It isn't about me. I am the 5%. What about everyone else?

This is about what is going on in our country right now. Individual states are looking to replicate what the federal government is doing. TX and FL governors are on board. We have an election this November. Candidates are going to figure out what voter math looks like and I am certain republicans will want a sledgehammer or chainsaw taken to ANY unnecessary spending and wouldn't be shocked if democrats do to.

I'll bet 90% of voters would want taxpayers paying ZERO to fund college athletics, especially now that it is professional.

I doubt Brannick or Sherrill would sit on a debate stage and say the state of NJ should support part of a $70,000,000 athletic department loss.

FAIR DISCLOSURE......I am for the state investing in athletics. I am against how the federal government is going about things.

Let me add..........

Don't bother sending a rational response detailing how important and necessary investments are to Rutgers University and how the investments pays itself back.

Unfortunately any good argument apparently doesn't hold water any more. Among many others....we are cutting funding to the the IRS saving taxpayers X amount while forgoing 2X in potential lost revenue.

Wow what a bunch of sorry losers in here….i will never tell people how to spend their money but if you want a better product to watch then put your money where your mouth is….

There is a reason this campaign is kicking off now and it’s due to regulation that’s coming. Collect any money you can from individuals before all of that is collectively scrutinized going forward in the new model of NIL.
Revenue sharing and corporate donations will drive the bus moving forward trying to eliminate “pay for play” as best they can. A corporation can still service pay for play but someone on the other end will be asking question where they get their ROI from that “marketing budget”.

So before all that happens shortly let’s do our part and get money together from individuals to create some momentum.

I wonder where the match is coming from and how much of this campaign goes to football vs basketball?
