Rutgers Retains Council to Investigate Football

Agree, this is Flood's infliction..

But c'mon, an admin dropping this info to the press on a day of good news for the program. The timing is very suspicious, and I'm the biggest paper fan on this board.

Someone in the admin doesn't want Flood or our program to succeed.
You need to separate this from other incidents with the media. My guess is that this wasn't an unwanted leak. Timing is just a coincidence and sadly bad timing.

Disagree, when the law firm confirms the the investigation has been going on since August, and it drops on a random Tuesday more than a month later. Not a coincidence.

And not blaming the media here..they're reporting what they were told.

good to see this here, honestly. If there are truly other issues, squash them. but this is the way a school should handle it.

Well, it's a damn good thing these lawyers come cheap. With all of the talk on this board about what we can't afford, it's nice to see all of this lawyer stuff that fits nicely into the RU budget.

Maybe those in charge feel the key to "success" is to weed out all involved with the current issues? Maybe they DO want success but don't like what they see, on-and-off the field, and want to go in a better direction?

Rutgers is not shy about getting [QUALITY] outside opinions, and we should be happy about that. Its the sign of a program with nothing to hide, and an intent to be above reproach. Nobody is saying an NCAA violation occurred with the ambassador program or the drug policy. But yes, the headline lent it self to a 'What now?' reaction. The answer - nothing. We are becoming Seinfeld - a show about nothing.

When Flood is back I hope everyone takes their finger off the self destruct key.

On the one hand, all the recent headlines leads me to think where there is smoke there is fire.

On the other, the Carroo situation reminds me to let the process play out before presuming guilt.

But the investigation is a good move by RU. If nothing comes up then we can have some confidence that all else is clean, and is something does come up then we can clean house.

Let me just say this. This news was coming out today. Has nothing to do with the Carroo news. No one knew what was coming out, if anything, regarding Carroo when we woke up today.

True, you may be right. But the fact some us leaking this story on a day of good news is troubling.

The school is doing everything right with this investigstion, that no one knew about a month ago. Not sure why anyone has to onow.

Ok, still don't know why it couldn't have cane out a month ago, but OK. You have no reason to lie. But don't get the story.

It is really a "leak" or did someone just hold onto it until today - purposely - since Carroo's court date was announced? I have no idea, but not gonna get too worked up about it, already stressing about Saturday night lol!

To be fair, it said the drug policy at Rutgers was put into place when Schiano came aboard. Its not Floods policy. To hear it from the members of this board, Flood is worse than Tony Montana. Hes a drug deal, prostitute pushing, woman beating, grade changing thug. Damn I am starting to like this guy.

HUH?? The policy is the policy, for the head coach to stick by, regardless of the HC's "name." What it has to do with Schiano, Tony Montana, or anyone else OTHER THAN Flood, his staff, and the kids on that roster, is absolutely nothing, to be honest.

PR department will let it dribble out into news, then it will be released. It didn't come out a month ago because report wasn't finished. The report is more likely completed and this the initial news cycle prior to full release in next few days/week.

If Flood wins some games he is not expected to win, we will not hear another word about this "investigation."

Study = Dismissed for cause, no buyout.
Well - what it likely means is dismissed for cause, Flood sues, RU ends up paying some of the buyout, which with the legal fees, ends up being more than the original buyout, along with months of terrible PR on issues that are basically of the everyone does it, and no one else anywhere else cares type.

If this is possibly laying the foundation for terminating Fludd's contract without paying him a penny then all Rutgers fans should be happy. The only thing worse than a head coach that knowingly violates the rules and meets off-campus and does all the other things Fludd did is a coach that does that and is not even a good head coach or recruiter. Also, keep in mind that the NCAA has a long habit of cracking down harder on weak programs than on strong programs, and since we're a weak program we don't want to give them any justification for claiming we have a lack of institutional control.

If Flood was following a Schiano era 4 strikes law, he probably is not on the hot seat for this issue.

Nuts, because if the allegation is the policy is to lenient its not Floods doing. I did not hear that someone failed it and nothing happened to them, just that its to lenient.

Sounds like it is another compliance issue that Julie did not catch under her watch. If the policy was in place for football and it was different than for other sports, and Flood followed it, no problem for Flood. But the APP article posted elsewhere indicates Football has a more lax policy than other sports. That's Julie's department. Not throwing stones at Julie, but as the AD, she should be reviewing and enforcing key policies and NCAA compliance issues.

first of all, these lawyers were contacted in August around same time the law firm investigating Flood was hired , second even after the penalties barchi gave flood a big pass on BTN--I would think the current investigators had a good idea about flood's situation when barchi made his pro flood comments

Is that an actual "allegation" or just what is being written by the papers? I don't open those links. I would like to think that they're going to look into the full scope of things and make a determination based on HOW Flood has handled whatever policy is currently in place. That would be the only fair way, IMHO, agree?

The entire Athletics Department Policy is said to be more lax than other B1G schools:

http://www.app.com/story/sports/col...g-test-policy-compared-big-ten-ncaa/73271014/

The most obvious difference: Unlike at Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, Maryland and Indiana, Rutgers differentiates football players from other student-athletes when penalizing a third strike.

Rutgers football players will be suspended a minimum of three games for a third violation, while Ohio State, Indiana and Maryland football players face a calendar year-long suspension.

A third violation at Illinois leads to a half-season suspension. A third at Wisconsin is grounds for dismissal — a punishment that Rutgers turns to after a fourth violation.

While all other Rutgers student-athletes are suspended for one calendar year for a third violation, the football exception exists so players will not be “excessively penalized” because its season has fewer games, according to the appendix of the policy adopted in 2008 and updated to reflect 2014 Big Ten membership.

Football is a hard and brutal sport. Players probably need to smoke a weed to forget about the aches and pains. Plus, the snacks after smoking weed helps keep their weight up.

The firm was hired to observe the investigation into Elmer Flood's email chicanery. Read the article. The center of this new review is the allegations that Scarface Terry failed multiple drug tests and the Recruiting Ambassador program.

I'd reset your "nothing to the story" gauge.

This is exactly what many of us said when the suspension was announced. There would be more shoes to drop.

Yep, that would include me. Frankly, I was surprised Flood wasn't fired for cause based on the academics/email mess and when he wasn't I figured perhaps RU needed to perform further due diligence to obtain the appropriate level of ammo to make this happen - or at least to reduce the buyout, which is how it is done these days - this way RU saves some money and Flood saves some face and can coach OL again somewhere.

I'll be beyond amazed if Flood is our coach next year, unless he pulls a miracle and gets to 7 win. Even then, if there's enough found he could still be gone - although that's why you can him now/soon, so that if we turn a miracle the decision doesn't become much harder - maybe the interim guy gets a chance or you just chalk it up to luck and move on with finding a new coach.

You have to find the reasoning in the policy funny, "because football has less games". Wtf does that have to do with anything.

Good luck trying to find a coach willing to come to Rutgers.
Flood may get fired, but NO decent coach is coming to Rutgers without really big guarantees or someone desperate for a second chance. If they are not in either of these categories, then have to question how smart they are.

Are they retaining a law firm they had hired a while ago, or are they hiring them for the first time? Hiring someone for the first time isn't retaining them, it's starting a partnership.

Hmm... looks like the suspension was just a way for Rutgers to buy some time to determine not when but how (for cause?) he will be terminated.

Bo Pellini comes to mind. . . .
Jim Tressel comes to mind. . . .
Charlie Weiss comes to mind. . . .
Is Rich Kotite available . . . . .

Where is $2.5million coming from, and is that all in, with assistant pay?

No one with even a trace of a legal blemish will be considered. And you can pretty much rule out anyone with a temper that isn't palatable enough for television.

"Richard Evrard, an attorney for Bond, Schoeneck & King, confirmed that his firm was retained by Rutgers in August to investigate and advise the university on potential NCAA rules violations. Evrard's firm was hired shortly after the university retained the Florham Park-based law firm Saiber to investigate whether head coach Kyle Flood had improper contact with a faculty member regarding a student-athlete's academic performance." They were hired in August.
