Rutgers Wrestling / West Coast Trip to Fresno State (Fri), CSU Bakersfield (Sat)

I get that the team just travelled 3000 miles, but I gotta say I was a bit disappointed in today's outcome. Just feel like outside of Colucci, Aguilar, and Alvarez, this was a bit of a letdown. That being said at least we got the W unlike previous years where the team was upset by teams like Lock Haven and Utah Valley. The good news is they can redeem themselves tomorrow vs Bakersfield.

What was uninspiring?
Did you watch the tournament where he just beat two ranked wrestlers to get that 14 ranking? I did, this was not how he wrestled in those matches. So it was an uninspiring performance against a freshman who isn't even sniffing the top 40. Just for comparison the #32 ranked wrestler from Army majored this kid. I call that an uninspiring performance from Pagano.

JoJo and Janzer have to get better from the bottom and they will. It’s a position they likely have rarely been put in as they dominated the high school scene.

Some ugly wrestling late in the match. Maybe I’m naive but I’ll blame some of it on the travel. Pagano for example was wrestling literally after midnight EST. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that our best wrestling happened early in the match.

Legitimately one of the longest matches I’ve ever seen. Fresno doing a two minute long t shirt toss in between every single match was absurd. The delays in the Colucci and MVB matches were excessive as well.

This is a young raw team that traveled 3000 miles with a short weigh in time after a lot of tough wrestling last weekend and pulled out a win.

Aguilar and Sammy looked absolutely dominant. MVB had a rough 3rd but dominated for most of that match and rode the kid for 3 min. He needs to close out better and learn how to get those bonus points, but he’s getting into a groove. Janzer wasn’t spectacular but pretty much handled his guy and will improve on bottom. Colucci continues to win the matches he should.

The redshirt for Jo Jo is gone. Debating that decision is pointless at this stage. Time for him to get in the room and down to the NJRTC with Ashnault and Meredith. He will get batter. Like I said last week, he will be a better wrestler in January.

Grello and Turley sat out so can’t complain about that.

Pagano got the win... I like the kid but let’s not pretend he’s a a returning All America. He will have ups and downs. It’s who he is. I’m excited to see what Correnti can do. Let’s not forget he’s on the team.

My only concern is 149 but that’s not a new development. Jo Jo had a freshman night... it happens. I’m not going to jump to conclusions. Enjoy the win folks. Remember this was supposed to be a down year.

Did we bring Zac Firestone on the trip? If so he could wrestle 141. If not we forfeit a big 6 points

I think you can only have a certain number of wrestlers on road trips (I thought it was 4 reserves)

If JoJo is hurt and Lipari hasn’t left school can he still wrestle for us if in Portal? Have a sit down and explain situation and Medical JoJo and bring back Lipari If that’s possible. Don’t know rules.

Yes he can. The only thing the portal does is allow other coaches to "officially" speak to athlete.

Have to be 'certified' to go down a weight. Going up a weight no problem.

I realize that, I'm just saying hopefully we have someone out there who could fill in at some of the lower weights like a Firestone. Ideally we would have people spread out to cover in case of injuries. This is an issue since we know we have Donner and Scott at 165 & 174 which doesn't leave many options below there especially if Correnti is there as well. That would leave 1 backup under 165 which would more than likely mean a forfeit at a weight we could have gotten bonus points ideally.

This definitely won't be a cake walk especially if we have to forfeit 141 and other guys (Aguilar, MVB, Janzer, or Colucci) can't get bonus points. They have a bunch of very solid wrestlers at 133, 149 (#17), and 197 (#24) and with the way 149 has been we could easily give up a TF or pin so between those two weights they could have 11-12 team points which doesn't leave much room for error.. especially after how the majority of the team wrestled last night.

Further breaking this down, Minn was able to get bonus points at the following weights:

125 - pin
141 - MD
174 - TF
184 - MD

Unfortunately for us without Grello and JoJo (if it is indeed a forfeit) there is a very good chance both of those weights go to CSU-B . Minn also lost 133, 197, and 285.. so if we drop any of those match-ups plus bonus points at 149 we could be in trouble.

Not sure about Grello or Aragona, but I had wrote this on Friday

125 Nic Aguilar (4-1) or Malcolm Robinson (2-1) vs Alejandro Figueroa (0-2)
133 #11 Sammy Alvarez (4-2) or Zach Firestone (3-1) vs Chance Rich (1-1)
141 #24 JoJo Aragona ((5-1) vs Carlos Herrera (1-2)
149 Gerard Angelo (3-1) or Jake Benner (4-4) vs Russel Rohlfing (1-1)
157 Mike Van Brill (4-2) vs Wyatt Gerl (0-2)
165 Brett Matter (5-1) or Jackson Turley (4-0) vs Jacob Thallin (0-2)
174 #15 Joe Grello (2-0) or Willie Scott vs Albert Urias (4-0)
184 Billy Janzer (4-2) vs Josh Loomer (0-2)
197 #14 Jordan Pagano (4-1) or Matt Correnti (4-0) vs Dom Ducharme (2-0)
285 #21 Christian Colucci (3-2) vs Jarrod Snyder (1-1)

The best match of the night could come at 197 where either Jordan Pagano or Matt Correnti (both past NCAA qualifiers ) could face Dom Ducharme, also an NCAA qualifer (at 184 last year).

No I didn't watch. That's why I asked what was uninspiring.

Sorry didn't mean to come off like a d*ck. There's a couple of board cops on here who have been hammering anyone who critiques any wrestler or has an alternative view point. If you don't feel things are all rainbows and unicorns you get lambasted. So again sorry I misconstrued your post as being sarcastic, completely my fault. I think these posters are completely in the wrong and a healthy debate is what makes this message board work.

Critiquing wrestlers is one thing ..it happens and is a function of this board ..that I get... but hammering kids incessantly is another ..the guy I said something to does it constantly even when the kid wins ...even when the team wins he rips the coaching...it gets tiring ...it’s a young team and it’s gonna be a long season as we all know ...I said what I had to say ...why not look at what the guy said all day ...constant critic as if no one did well ...we won pretty handily yet he tears apart coaching and throws team under bus after two matches ...young kids are gonna make mistakes like Sammy did ..they will learn ...I saw it totally different ..the kid was down 6-0 almost instantly and did not quit ...at all ...came all the way back in fact ..how about mentioning that instead of his constant criticizing that he made same mistake again ..just one example yesterday of many !

Apology accepted. I understand.
