Interesting piece on building out a March Madness type brack for last year's College Football teams. Rutgers draws a 12' seed. Intrestingly Toledo is an 11 seed. All for fun, and different take.

It's too much for the young bodies.

I prefer a 24 team playoff, with the top 8 teams seeded. That keeps the regular season meaningful, while allowing for an improving team to win it all.

Div 1 hoops has like 3 times the number of teams as FBS football. To get the same level of qualifier you would need to limit football to 24 teams. Looking at the NCAA hoops qualifiers most of the 7 to 11 seeds have a winning % of 63% or higher. That would mean the Football tournament should be just about 9+ win teams with maybe a few 8 win teams sprinkled in from the P5. From the midmajors they would probably need to be 10 win teams (9 as conference champs). A 7 and 5 team (58% winning pct) shouldn't be included unless all 7 losses were by less than 3 points to the top 7 seeds in the tourney (not likely).

A 24 team playoff would have:
Conference Champs (10)
- B10 champ
- ACC champ
- B12 champ
- SEC champ
- P12 Champ
- AAC champ (if at least 9 wins)
- CUSA champ (if at least 9 wins)
- MWC champ (if at least 9 wins)
- Sunbelt champ (if at least 9 wins)
- MAC champ (if at least 9 wins)

Autooqualifiers (5 + independents)
- Independents if ranked 16 or better in the polls
- 2nd guaranteed team from each Power 5 if ranked in top 15

Rest of selections (9 based on this year since no independents qualified)
- Committee chooses rest based on rank, strength of schedule, and other metrics

I agree with your first statement which is why I disagree with the rest of your post. Anything more than an 8 team tournament is too much unless you reduce the season to 11 games with no conference championship game.

5 champions from the Power 5 conference and 3 teams from the other group (which includes independents). If you can't win your conference, you have no reason to cry about being excluded from the championship tournament. If you want to reap the financial benefits of football independence, you relinquish the benefit of having a potential automatic bid in the championship tournament.
