Stanford Dropping Wrestling

In a word... horrible.
With an endowment of between $ 12.5 - 13 billion Stanford could easily support those 11 teams they cut... You don’t see that there was a reason to do it during a pandemic? Can’t do that at the state school level as the outcry would be overwhelming.

Endowment money is earmarked for specific items/purposes, so legally they likely can't, unless money was earmarked for the wrestling program or any other program, which appears unlikely and is why at least the wrestling program is fundraising for that now.

With an endowment of 12.5-13 billion I would suspect some of that was available for some of the eliminated non revenue sports. Check it out and get back to us...Thanks

You clearly don't understand how this works. If there was any money designated for those sports, then legally it would have to be used for them and only them, so clearly there wasn't much, if any.

I clearly understand how endowments are separate and not normally associated with the athletic programs of an institution. However , I would also believe monies can be moved, transferred and directed in a direction not originally intended for. Stanford University is a private , non prophet school so , the ability to support a non revenue sport is not out of the realm of possibility and should not be discounted. At Rutgers , a state University, much different.

No, you don't. Endowments work the same at public and private universities. The donor specifies what the $ can be used for and that's it. The school can't just move it to something else. Study up on the legal stuff...

Bucky O'Connor hoped it would work that way

Stanford's endowment is only $13 billion? Thought it would be about double that
