Take a look at the Philly Inquirer's story

I do think Temple is onto something with that passing attack. If they find a way to protect Warner and catch those balls more reliably.. I could see a big upset or two next year. Tey are closer than the score indicated, I think.
The Owls could use some schooling on tackling.

I got to Rutgers from Camden County in 96. I had never seen an advertisement in South jersey, and I'd seen a total of one football game on TV. There was zero presence in the 90s.
Amazing. So you and many others from your area still attended Rutgers without any real outreach/publicity/marketing- imagine what Rutgers could do in that area if it tried…

NOT when they have a team in their city...Maybe they can make a section devoted to the other State's team but this was a Temple story in a Temple city...The OP was upset that a story in Temple's local news was about Temple and not Rutgers

While I’m not upset like the OP was about this article…I get where he’s coming from.

I’ll repeat this again - it is not just a Philly news outlet - they cover Philly, PA, NJ and DEL. The Inquirer/Philly.com has a whole section devoted to “South Jersey”. They cover South Jersey High School Sports.

So yes - you would think they would also provide some coverage of Rutgers Athletics. The reality is they have limited resources and obviously don’t see the value in covering Rutgers as they don’t have a beat writer assigned to Rutgers Football (but do for Temple and Penn State).

IMO it’s because they see Rutgers being covered by the NY metro reports and also because we have sucked.

They do put out an article once in awhile about local athletes though (i.e. last year they put a nice one out about Derek Simpson). If we start winning they will produce more articles about Rutgers. It happened in the mid 2000s.

I wouldn't say many. Those who did now about Rutgers thought it was lesser academically that it really is. Several of my classmates chose Delaware over RU. I went to Rutgers because my parents had just split and our finances were such that it was the only college I could afford. Otherwise, I'd probably be on a message board talking about GW, Penn State, or Maryland.

I'm not saying it's inaccurate or derogatory . . . just that it's a story that treats Temple as the hometown team. Again, that's not surprising for a Philly newspaper, but South Jersey is part of that media market, and so this kind of coverage weakens Rutgers' sway in South Jersey.

To put the point differently, this story would have been written much differently for a game, say, between Villanova and Temple.
Can’t really slice it any other way. Temple is the hometown team.
