We had 9 steals in yesterdays game. I thought the team played great defense in the first and early in the second. We got our hands on the ball a lot which helped us build the lead. This is not a moral victory at all. I'm just hopeful that our guards are going to be improved defensively this year. Of course this all depends on how the refs officiate the game, but I thought Sander, Williams, and Daniels played some good clean D early.

Steals are an interesting thing. It's a gamble. In our case, we have to gamble to become a better team. But i remember Mack would try to go for the ball a lot last year and would get beat and then defense had a greater chance of breaking down.Out of ten times you go for a steal-4 could be fouls. I am just saying, the matchup has to be there. Look before hand at games and find out players who normally turn the ball over a ton. Put emphasis on trying to get the ball from them.

Watching bits and pieces of the minnesota - temple game they referenced Richard Pitino (who right now i don't think much of as a coach..his teams play without heart at times) saying they look to get 35 defensive touches of the basketball per game. Our teams the last few years have been seriously deficient here. last night I'll bet we got the 35 defensive touches Richard looks for.

I just remember Mack going a lot, and the gamble not working out. For the amount of touches, how many do you get fouled on?You have to scout who can't handle the ball, who over dribbles, and who dribbles too high. You go after them. Out biggest strength is athleticism, so you have to go for them. I just wonder how it works out game by game and how the gamble looks at the end of the season.
