Things that you want to see from Pikiell year one.

To the eye I want to see a change in the pace and urgency we play with...especially on the defensive end. It will not be easy getting returning players to change.

What I want to see - A team that other teams hate to play
- hate it because RU plays with fundamental soundness, swarming tenacity, creativity and is tip-off-to-final buzzer just non-stop relentless.
- hate it because - even if they manage to win the game, when they play RU they will feel like they always look shabby & off their game & at risk of losing

Here are a handful of mine in no particular order:
  1. Full-game effort from players on offense and defense
  2. Players in-tune with their teammates (whether just meshing on the court or rushing to pick a guy up off the floor, etc). The way the Duke players are I think shows an example of what I mean (and from year to year it's a regular thing).
  3. Win more games
  4. Find a knockdown 3pt shooter who can find his spots and be the guy who consistently hit's 3s on guard drive/kickout plays.

I want to say "we haven't seen that around here in a long time" at least five times this season

Team gets better from a skills, and teamwork perspective, as the year progresses. Steady improvement.

Conditioned players. Players that hustle on defense and close on the three-point line. Players that know how to box out and do it aggressively. 40 minutes of effort from everyone. Players who stay eligible. No assistant coaches on the bench who look like they're in a coma. Nobody driving the lane like a madman and tossing the ball in the air near nothing (though Daniel's graduation alone may end that). More wins. Keep the blowouts to a minimum. Please, none of the 35-60 point losses. RU's presence in the HS gyms of NJ. Some capable NJ HS players starting to name RU as at least an option. I'm sure there's more.

this "opposite of Jordan" post wins the thread IMO

well done willis!

THE ABILITY TO MAKE LAYUPS

- make them when receiving the ball within 3 feet of the basket
- make them when following-up off of rebounds
- make them on fast breaks

.....MAKE FREAKIN' LAYUPS!!!!
I think the men and womens teams should go through the same drills on making layups.Improvement certainly is needed by both teams.

I would like to see a few plays designed and executed to stop scoring droughts after 3 minutes instead of 8 minutes.
I would like to see the other team's best player get frustrated trying to get an open shot.
I would like to see a drive and kick out for an open (and made) three pointer.
I would like the team to be listening to the coach before the game instead of watching the pregame video for the 15th time.
I would like to keep the cap on my bottle of water...

I believe that his SB teams were very, very good at defending the 3-pt shot, as it's one of the things he "keys" on D.

I want to see a game like Water's first year against Georgetown.
Herve had a breakout game, even more on defense. As you saw what was happening you knew it was real. The team was growing into competing at a high level right before your eyes and you knew that on any Knight, anything positive was possible.

If only we had kept Waters, he would be at Pitt now and we would have hired Pikiell from a position of strength. Fantasy lane!

Good list. If we can outwork, out-think, and out-execute our opponents, while staying healthy (not Jordan's fault this year), we should win 5-6 more games than we did this year. 12-13 wins would be a huge improvement and a signal that Pikiell has a chance to turn this mess around. Anyone thinking we can get to more than 15 wins should really be checked into a psych ward, as we still don't have the talent for that in the B1G.

LOL. All seem like such basic things, but so true! It's where we are at....
