Thread for well-balanced, thoughtful RVision talk

You guys have reached a whole new level of crazy. I started coming over to this board because every other post was about PSU and now I can't stop reading the car crash threads like this one.

The outrage on the internet these days has gotten completely out of hand. Do you realize what you guys have gone 3 pages complaining about? A PSU alum that tweeted pro-PSU tweets and made a TIC comment about being in the Rutger's bookstore was hired for an unpaid internship. There are employees at every university in the country that went to school elsewhere. I'm sure there are many other RU employees that went to PSU and many PSU employees that went to RU. And she isn't even actually an employee of Rutgers!

Get over it. You're embarrassing yourselves.

As usual, the Penn State fan totally misses the point.
Is reading comprehension not required at that great institution?

This thread has been one of the more insightful, well-managed debates in the history of this board.
"RU4Real said :"This thread has been one of the more insightful, well-managed debates in the history of this board."
and I must agree with that.
In my opinion it is/was a great job by all involved in this RVision discussion.[cheers]

interesting comments by bac2therac, if this thread is such "a nonissue", why keep coming back in? I agree with RU4Real, this thread has lived up to the title and the intent of the OP.

I think we found Macy's Dad. LOL.

That's too bad. I didn't always agree with what Shill posted, or how he posted it. But more often than not, his posts were interesting.

This board will be pretty boring if the only posters are those who think in lock-step with each other.
I rarely agree with the guy but he was always fair and he is very knowledgable with projected TV times and channels. It would be a thread I'd miss every week

I'm one of those who feel that as a graduate of RU I want to see other students and fellow alumni succeed. Perhaps I am being selfish but the more RU affiliated people succeed, the greater chance at a higher number of benefactors/donors......the better potential that RU becomes as a University and in Athletics.

I'm dissapointed that an RU student or Grad was not selected to this position as it both gives even a slight boost to the communications department as well as creating a potential stepping stone for another RU grad in the media.

Geez Trooper!
He's kinda right. If she was a real "intern" I'd never comment but she's worked for a lot of outlets. That was rough....I never thought I'd look fondly on the days of Tom and that skinny dude with the oversized white T's. What was his name? It kind of sucks bc I don't want to watch but love the highlights......

Had a great discussion expressing our feelings about Macy Golder and RVision, but I'm beginning to think
we-have-officially-jumped-the-shark.jpg

because of what's being said now is starting to sound like what got the other RVision threads deleted.

You guys just may get your wish and run her out of town. If it happens, you can pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

All I know is Taryn Hatcher is going to be a bonafide star and Macy has some huge shoes to fill. I wish her luck. That being said, RVision probably should be hiring Rutgers students/grads. But, they didn't. So welcome Macy into the family. If she expressed desire to come to Rutgers then she obviously wants to be here and we should want her here too.

Can't claim there aren't those like you're criticizing, but I feel most who have had a say about how they feel about hiring Macy Golder have expressed they much rather the RVision internship went to a RU Student or RU Grad., not fire her.
Think you're making more out of this discussion than there really is.

I dont think so Madhat-
I agree with those who believe her position should be filled by an RU grad, but that's where it ends.
To the majority, this is about her twitter account and where she went to school, without it this thread would not be 4 long pages long and another thread deleted.

You're right Zap....that's the main issue for me. It should've gone to a RU student. I'm not calling for her to be fired though, but she is terrible. I can't listen to her. I just find it very hard to believe that she was the "most qualified."

Okay... the second knock on her is that video. Hopefully it's just "new job" nerves, but that.... needs some polish.

In all fairness, that's the whole appeal and purpose of this position: it gives a motivated individual a channel for polishing her/his skills for something bigger and better---which, again, brings us back to "why" the position should go to an RU student/grad.

Which is pretty much what I've been saying.

I have zero expectation that, for my money, RVision is some highly-polished delivery of quality sports programming. My expectation is that it provides a somewhat unique, insider's perspective of the sidelines of the football program (and other sports).

To gain that perspective requires an individual motivated both by a desire to improve and succeed and a desire to evangelize Rutgers athletics.

I'm perfectly okay with a Rutgers student, from the Rutgers communications program, using RVision as a training ground. As I posted yesterday, the mistakes and miscues can be utilized to improve the performance of both the individual and the communications program overall.

Taking that opportunity and "offshoring" it essentially deprives Rutgers of something very valuable.

This!
Conveyed without making a young girl feel like a piece of crap.

RVision is nothing more than a home movie and accordingly should be kept in house. It's called R Vision not The Vision.

I apologize if I am a bit confused. I've already made my feelings known in this thread as to why I this type of position should go to an RU Student/Alum. That aside, why is it taboo or not allowed to critique a 23 year old college graduate who has accepted a Media role in front of the camera based on her performance or any potential missteps on social media? There is certainly an allowance to critique 18 year olds still in college based on their performance on the field or missteps off it........as long as the comments are not personal or overboard - which in this thread they are not, I'm having a difficult time balancing the difference here.

You are referring to Hutch (Hutchison). And I don't really have a dog in this fight. I just hate everything involved with PSU. So as far as I'm concerned, dump her like yesterday's garbage.

You can say and think what ever you like

Any chance we can get Ken Singleton (a freakin Oriole) fired from his Yanks broadcasting gig ?

Either you didn't read the thread or you're intentionally trying to obfuscate the issue. This person could have been a graduate of PennCoTech or the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, the issue is still the same: R Vision is apparently not committed to giving media opportunities to Rutgers students.

I think PennCoTech let's you keep the tools after you graduate. Pretty Sweet.

I certainly can. But I'm not really sure that addressed my question. Let me pose it another way......why do you feel bad for Macy? She's an adult, she likely used her network to get the position, she has chosen a profession in front of the camera, she mistakenly did not scrub her social media given the potential sensitivities that certainly should have been understood. Why is she not accountable to any scrutiny, especially given the fact that she is entering a profession that will require a thick skin due to competition and exposure?

I'll take a stab at this.

Yes, she is an adult and she wasn't particularly savvy when it comes to her social media. At the same time, there needs to be some perspective and proportionality to the response.

Perspective: She is a young adult trying to break into a media career. Granted it is a public and visible role, but she is still young and presumably she is still figuring things out. Maybe she doesn't like Rutgers or respect the program, but really, who cares. As long as she is professional in her job and puts forth an honest effort, we shouldn't be abusing her on twitter and social media.

Proportionality: With most professions, if/when you make a few mistakes early in your career, your boss takes you aside and gives you a few pointers and no one is the wiser. Granted she chose to pursue this career, but this is RVision...not 60 Minutes, Frontline, or 20/20. I am not on twitter, so I don't know what the back and forth was like, but it isn't like she killed someone or committed some horrible crime. There is no reason to try to intimidate or cause grief to this gal through social media. I know we live in 'pitchfork nation' where anything that happens opens the door for everyone to comment and criticize people online, but she has to live with the real consequences of all this, while for the rest of us, we get to send out some comment on social media, then we go back to our lives. If she gets comment after comment after comment and gets intimidated/bullied online, I don't know how that is appropriate or proportional to her 'crime' of having gone to Penn State and been a fan of their program. Could she have been more social media savvy...yes, but that isn't the issue.

Lastly, the focus of most people's frustration is correctly on the hiring process and the fact that a Rutgers grad/student should get the opportunity to get exposure through this medium and an opportunity to hone their craft. Macy is not really where people should be focused.

Lastly, Lastly....if the above isn't convincing, I look at it like this. I can choose to be a nice person and wish her well, or be someone that kicks her when she is down. Personally, I'd rather be nice.
