who will defend him? Mag? His 3 point shooting seems down a bit from last year. Our 3 point defense is horrible because we allow open looks as part of our strategy. Is Mag the difference from last year when he torched us.

Maybe bother him with the length? It’s a tough ask for Mag given he’d have to chase him all over the court. Maybe a better guard for Simpson/Davis. Could see Davis keeping up but Tomonaga is crafty and older so that could be an issue. Either way don’t like the matchup, RU struggles with teams that have good spacing and thrive moving the ball left to right with quick ball reversals. I actually think we end up having one of our better offensive games of the year but still can’t keep up with Nebbys offense. I see a score of 81-73

We don’t have much of a choice but to play Nebraska this way:

Mast — Cliff
Gary — Hyatt
Brice Williams (who is a 6-7 wing/guard) — Mag
Lawrence — AWill
Tominaga — Simpson

You can’t put Mag on Tominaga because that leaves 6-4 AWill to guard 6-7 Williams.

Tominaga loves to run around like crazy, looking for screens that will give him an open look.

A few strategies that could help:
1) Denying him the ball as much as possible, with one of our quicker guards.
2) Trapping the ball handler to get turnovers or forcing a pass to someone other than Tominaga.
3) Play some zone so that when he runs around he’ll be picked up by our guy in each zone.
4) Pray that he misses.

I am thinking a will. The bigger question is how much switching are we doing as he comes off those screens. It could make whoninitially guards him almost irrlevant

Don’t love the zone. They’ll shoot right over it. Has to be a combo of Derek and JMike on him. I’m worried Gary will eat Hyatt alive though. I say switch all screens first four mins. Then alternate back. Then switch all screens again. Alternate every tv timeout for the first half and see if it impacts their offense.

I like a junk, stay in it until they make zone just to disrupt their flow, but prolonged zone feels like a disaster

Per the great Dan Patrick : No one can defend Tominaga ! You can only hope to contain him!

Kid is a non stop running battery!

I feel the only player we have to try to defend him is JMike.

Austin Williams doesn’t have the athleticism but his physicality may neutralize Tominaga in stretches.

Albeit the Tominaga issue is a concern but as always I’m more concerned about where does our scoring come from and can we go a game and score within each 4 minute timeout stretch !

Let's see if RU plays that same dumb style of cheating off opponents on the perimeter and then trying to recover to affect the shooter. Truth is RU's defense is only as good as the opponent is shooting from 3, because that shot is always available to teams that work the ball around with the style of defense the Knight employ.

I think it's pretty obviously Davis and Simpson

Davis I'd probably give first crack at it. I think be would fully embrace the challenge to chase him around, fight through screens, and shut him down. Simpson has the quickness to stay with him too

Williams will always be the go to guy against bigger stronger guards

I give you an A for this answer. Bart has us #6 in defensive efficiency and like 350 in offensive efficiency. I always worry about defense, but no progress can be made if we can't be more efficient on offense.

RU will have to keep Nebraska under 70 to win

my question is why is penn state so high scoring and able to knock off Wisconsin and Ohio State given the situation they came in with
Penn State did a good job of bringing in a mix of proven talent and untapped potential.

Ace Baldwin - A-10 POTY and Defensive POTY
Qudus Wahab - Proven high-major producer at Georgetown/Maryland
D'Marco Dunn - Former 4 star, top 100 recruit
Puff Johnson - 4 star, top 100 recruit
Nick Kern - Was quite productive last yeat at VCU

Not like everyone has worked out (the Patriot League transfer O'Boyle has been nothing and Zach Hicks from Temple has been a letdown) but they did a good job in the portal. Much better than Minnesota when their coach had to bring in 7-8 new players in year 1. Being the vcu coach with Baldwin and Kern helps, obviously.

Also Kanye Clary's development has been really good.

thanks did not know they got that haul

makes me even sadder for our situation and how okay Pikiell is with average players.

yes huge class coming in BUT dismal recruiting the past couple seasons..you have to be aggressive and move parts and stock talent...Pike was left gasping taking Oskar back...boggles my mind,,,,,and yes bad luck with Cam and Paul although the latter he might have been better off cutting ties but it doesnt excuse our roster this season.

Yea Baldwin and Clary are really good. Baldwin is streaky. If those two are on they can be very tough.

I was so used to Penn State playing tough D under their previous guy but struggling to score. Now it seems like their coach has taken the VCU style and a more offensive orientated team has come to Happy Valley. Put up a boatload of points last night on Wisconsin 87 who had zero answer to stop them in the last 3 minutes.

I think we're a better team than Penn State but they'll end up with the better record. We play Purdue, Wisconsin, and Illinois six times, Penn State plays them three times. They play Minnesota, Maryland, and Indiana six times, we play them three times.

This kind of imbalance is why I hate the Big Ten possibly going to 22 games. That's just going to make the issue worse.

With 18 teams I'd prefer to go a system where you play everyone once plus one rivalry double-play.

Michigan-Michigan State
Purdue-Indiana
Illinois-Northwestern
Wisconsin-Minnesota
Ohio State-Penn State
Rutgers-Maryland
Iowa-Nebraska
UCLA-USC
Washington-Oregon

Also solves some of the west coast travel woes. Every year with an 18 game schedule you'd play two of the west coast teams on the road, so you'd be able to knock that out on one trip. With a 22 game schedule it's going to be so dumb when we play at USC, at Washington, and at Oregon and have to make two or even three trips out there.

The "dumb" strategy that gets us top defenses year after year lol.

I looked back, our recruiting class was ranked 52 in 2018 and 31 in 2020. Thanks before we were good. After that it was 103, 99 and 69. That’s not capitalizing on our success at all. I just don’t get it either.

he's only 6ft2 and has a crazy quick release. Only 14 turnovers on the year but 7 of them just in the last 3 games. So pressuring him and poking it away could be a strategy.
really does have a Curry like release

JMike feels like a relatively good matchup, but I think you just throw guys at him. Reink Mast scares me too
i think Mast is going to be more of an issue than Tominaga, great post moves and can drain the 3. Poor man's Garza

He gets hot and it’s game over.

I think put Williams on him and have him play physical.

Rutgers wins if this kid had an average game
