Urb Meyer told Ash to take RU job over Syracuse

I was just joking around.

All joking aside.

Trust me, both schools are much better off in a Power 5 conference that we were in the terrible Big East.

ACC added Cuse because the ACC wanted to be the best MBB conference in the country and they wanted to spread throughout the east coast.

But we are not riding the Big Ten success, since #1 we are not making much more than we did in the Big East for now and #2 we already made the Big Ten and BTN a TON of money thanks to our TV market. They didn't add us as a joke, the Big Ten added Rutgers because we could and have made them a ton of money. The Big Ten is much richer in both TV money and research thanks to Rutgers. We still need to catch up with the rest of them as far as winning games. But both Football and MBB have finally got great staffs. Wrestling has already took their place among the best programs in the country. Lax is doing pretty good on both fronts and Women's Soccer made the final four last year. Things will take time, some sports may take a lot longer than others but the days of being a doormat are behind us for the most part. We are not going to go backwards now. The main thing holding us back before was lack of funds and they won't be an issue for long.
No doubt man. ACC football is better than a lot of you think but don't get me wrong. I am jealous you guys are in that Big10 east division. You guys are gonna benefit for sure.

Marathon, not a sprint buddy. We had many years of ineptitude to overcome. I really don't care about who we shared it with. More concerned that we should have finished and won it outright and we didn't. Yes, 2006 we didn't win it but you do realize that UL and WVU were Top 10 teams that year don't you? We finished #12. While I think our ceiling is only MSU/Iowa level, I don't think we've even come close to it yet. 2005-2014 was our "best era" since going D1-A in the late 70's, sure, but it was also the first time we started to fund football at a 1-A level. It's safe to say Cuse's best football years are way behind them (much like Pitt). I really don't think we've approached our ceiling yet. 2006 was scratching the surface.

Well Boogie I guess we will have to see how this plays out

Which team will evolve first into a continual Top 25 Program Rutgers or Pitt.

I'm sure Rutgers is your answer and Pitt is mine.

Rutgers has a lot of upside but so does Pitt(New Chancellor committed to improving Academics,Research and Athletics, New AD, New HC, good natural recruiting base and improved financials from ACC membership). You seem to discount these positives in Pitt's case but elevate them when discussing Rutgers. Saying Pitt's best football years are way behind them but Rutger's best years are ahead is simply illogical (ok Spock).

Rutgers has many of the above mentioned positives (New AD, New HC, good natural recruiting base and improved financials (phased in $$) from B1G membership.)

Pitt like Rutgers has all of the positives in place to show significant improvement in their respective football programs going forward. (In Pitt's case I believe we started the improvement process last year and will be even better this year).

lol, I will save some laughs my man. We will see. This is internet chatter stuff. I can't take it too seriously. I always hear about Rutgers fans being annoyed of SU fans they know or are co-workers etc... It's Interesting, there must be a lot of SU fans in the NY/NJ area. Maybe we are NY's college team after all.

...don't believe everything you read on the Internet or you see advertised on the top of a taxi;-)

Upstate NY's college FB team [thumb2]
But don't look behind you, Buffalo is gaining quickly and is your main rival for the hearts of Upstate New York college football fans.
Heck if UConn ever gets in the ACC, between them and Buffalo Syracuse fans will be taking plenty of Prozac after they see how many upstate college FB fans ( without ties to Syracuse) start looking at those schools as a college FB program to support .

As for college football in NYC ?
Talk college football to a so called Syracuse FB fan there, you'll find the conversation changed quickly to Orange MBB or one of the NYC area NFL pro teams.
If there are Syracuse FB fans in the NYC metro area, you have a hard time finding them and it's just about impossible to talk about Syracuse FB once you find one.

Spin doctoring your expectations.
I had said Syracuse once was a good program so you can bring up the past and be proud of it.
It's the future that has Syracuse fans worried .

Yes Rutgers has a way to go to be what RU fans expect it to be ( notice expect , not just want)
and bringing up RU FB's past just shows that Syracuse fans do not like what they see for Rutgers future if it gets a HC that can mine the State of New Jersey for its HS Talent and bring in talent from other states.
Syracuse fans know for the Orange that would be a miracle and their recruiting brings in occasionally some top talent but the usual recruit is your average player that feels he has a better shot at making the rotation than if he went to a school with the future Rutgers has.
As for just winning some B1G games and being satisfied with being a middle of the B1G East division, that's not happening for some RU fans, we expect some big wins and to be a top B1G program anything less will be disappointing.
The syracuse mentality of settling for some wins is not the way we support our football program.
That's why Ash feels he can make RU FB a major player in the B1G, the way RU fans support
a winner has been proven and the casual fans in the NY/NJ metro area are starting to look at RU FB as a program they can get behind.

Stick to your hoping for a few wins and spin it anyway you like, but this isn't the Rutgers you hope it is, but the Rutgers I know it will be that we're talking about.
The wins will come because Rutgers potential finally is being mined and will keep on improving
the way it started whit Greg Schiano as HC.
Even Schiano was being view in a negative light by many for not making RU top program after the 2006 season and that's the difference between RU and Syracuse FB fans.
Syracuse FB fans know their glory days are gone and just hope for glimpses of glory every year
Rutgers fans know the RU FB program can and will be great and won't settle for glimpses
of greatness every year.
So say what you will, but be SCARED :cool2:
I have said repeatedly on here that I want Rutgers to win. Its better for Northeast Football. It doesn't bother me. Sorry if that disappoint you. Im not your typical Cuse fan. And I disagree, I think the worse is in the past. You act like your the only team that's benefiting from a new conference. We are getting more money, there is a new commitment with administration, facilities are improved and will get even better with the minnesota vikings style dome roof thats coming. If Rutgers can improve, why can't SU? lol . Don't let your hatred cloud your opinion. We will never get another Greg Robinson. That was a terrible hire that set us back 10 years. ACC is better conference than you think. I enjoy the unique offenses and the superior athletes in the conference. SU has never been a consistent power in football. SU had good teams in the 50's late 80's and 90"s. Besides that 7-5 and 8-4 seasons were the norm and thats what we will continue to be. a 9 to 10 win season here and there will happen but to say we will be in college football playoffs in a few years will be unrealistic. Maybe sometime in the future.I am a football guy but I follow other SU sports more than football. We are well rounded and I like that more than anything.

I agree that SU fans keep moving the goalposts when it comes to RU football:

2000-RU will never be competitive.
2003-RU got lucky...they will never beat SU with regularity.
2005-Schiano will leave at first chance he gets. (he didn't)
2006-RU couldn't even win the conference championship.
2010-RU is back to a doormat (first losing season in 6 years)
2012-RU will never be invited to B1G. (we were)
2014-RU will never beat OSU or Michigan. (we did beat Michigan)
2015-2nd bad season in a decade! RU is a doormat and they won't fire Flood because they can't afford to and they accept mediocrity (fired coach who is career 4 games over .500)

I really actually enjoy all the SU negative opinions. Makes proving them wrong that much sweeter.

it was a joke. I can care less who's talking about SU football in NYC. lol I know you guys care about it though. NYC is a pro sports town. SU was bad, and Rutgers got better along with everyone else in the Big East but that was a long time ago. Thats how you celebrate Rutgers football? " We are not Syracuse whipping boy anymore. looks at us." I'm Welcome to college football, now win Big ten games. Seeing SU losing is the highlight of your day. We must have hurt your feelings really bad back then. lol

We've been in the conference a whopping 2 years with a joke of a coaching staff. In 2014, our OC was more qualified to be the HC than the actual HC lol. As stated by someone else in this thread, Flood, despite having 3 non-losing regular seasons his first 3 years was not good enough. We want and expect more now. Far cry from 16 years ago. And yes, Syracuse football was a bully program. Was never good enough to beat PSU with consistency (only 2 wins in that 80's-90's run, RU even had 1 vs the Nits) but would celebrate running up the score on lowly Rutgers. Rich Scanlon, a PLAYER who jumped into the stands to fight a RU fan (child), is a microcosm of SU's fan base after RU got their act together and became competitive. I KNOW SU fans feel every good player who commits to RU is "wasting" their careers because RU "will never be good" but if they just went to SU instead the Orange would return to their former glory. Go ahead and try and deny that. You know I'm right.

If you couldnt beat us during the Greg Robinson era then something was wrong with your program. Im more interested to see how Rutgers did against SU when they had a adequate coach. Marrone was 2-2 vs some of your best teams. Would have been 3-1 if Bailey didnt fumble on his way for the winning TD in overtime. Marrone had less talent and 15 less scholarship players because he cleaned house when he got there. You guys get mad because SU fans dont pat your backs enough. The big brother doesnt give the little brother enough love.

Money, I think again it's more of the denial factor; a lot of times the online cuse fans sort of remind me of the guy who was 'good' in HS, but at 45 years old can't accept that life is different now. It definitely isn't 'big/ little brother' IMO. A number of cuse fans like to point out 'college football existed before 2005'; well, yes, and it's also existed after 1998 as well.

...also, Bailey was stripped of the ball; wasn't like he dropped it out of the clear blue sky...and if you want to play 'if', cuse was lucky to win the '10 game. A 10-2 cuse team in 2001 also needed 4 missed FG's and a missed XP to beat 2-9 Rutgers in 2001. Cuse fans also refuse to acknowledge that their 'dominance' in the modern era coincided with our worst period as well, so you ain't getting any sympathy there (no, RU wasn't 'terrible for a hundred years' no matter how many times others like to repeat that misnomer).

I'm sorry but 2009 and 2010 were not "some of our best teams" by any stretch. In 2010 we were bad even before Eric was injured. And Cuse ran the score up on Terry Shea. Congratulations! In fact Cuse fans recently were waxing poetic about McNabb hanging 70 on RU in the Dome in '98. Conveniently failed to mention that in 1999, we went 1-11 and our only win was vs Syracuse LOL.

Here's the deal...you guys don't want to be remembered for the G-Rob Era but yet only think of RU as Shea Era bad. Can't have it both ways.

Bravo Joe! Also, I'm pretty sure we had a chance to win up in the Dome in 2004 but fumbled the ball away late in the game so they shouldn't go there with the "ifs". Although I still love their insistence that they "beat us" in 2012 because they had more yards from scrimmage LOL. Like we were playing fantasy football or something.

In all seriousness, neither program is anything to write home about at the moment. But we are not as bad as they like to make us out to be and they haven't been good in quite some time.

If you think you know SU's so well, then you will know that SU NEVER relied solely on NJ prospects. That is a myth. Rutgers fans like to think they are the reason for SU not winning consistently because we are not grabbing the top NJ kids anymore. There's alway's been a lack of talent in NY, SU always relied on grabbing kids from FLA first and foremost then a few from DMV ( Graves), some from PA ( Harrison), some from Conn( Freeney), some from Ohio (Reyes) and we would get a few from Jersey. Penn st and Notre Dame routinely got the top players.

Microcosm? you are one of those guys to judge the acts of a few and assume everyone is the same. Should I say every rutgers player beats on his girlfriends and mistress who happens to be a Rutgers employee. I wouldnt say that because I know its not true.

you all do realize this is just a stepping stone for ash. rutgers will never be a destination job. ask vanderbilt how that worked out with franklin.

Really? If he really builds Rutgers into a consistent winner in the Big Ten (think like Dantonio at Michigan State) to the point where he becomes a hot coach, why would he leave? The Big Ten East is the second best division in the sport at the moment (behind the SEC West). He will get paid just like Mullen at Miss State. I think it's plain to see why Franklin left Vandy now. There was controversy with the rape case and he happens to be from Pennsylvania. The only jobs I could see Ash wanting are the cream of the crop type jobs (Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, Texas, etc.) He's an Iowa guy but IF he builds RU up will he really leave RU to go coach the Hawkeyes? Maybe but I can't see it if we pay him. Iowa is Fry and Ferentz's program. If Ash wins at Rutgers in the Big Ten, he will easily be elevated in popularity above Schiano who didn't really win anything of note in the Big East and this would be his baby. Sure he may leave if he's successful but I don't think it's as cut and dried as you are making it.

Oh so now margin of victories matter? And tell me again that Syracuse wasn't a bully team lol. I do recall Cuse fans whining in 2006 when Schiano gave the ball to Leonard EVERY play in the 4th quarter so he'd get the all time scoring record even when the game was in hand. Would you brag about beating Lehigh, Princeton and Colgate for half a century? Because up until 1980 that was really our identity. Those were our peers, not SU and PSU. You beat us up for 2 decades after we "made the jump" and we beat you for 1, the last one I may add. And yes, Rich Scanlon was being a sore loser as many Cuse fans have been when RU has beaten them. Not ALL Cuse fans, but many.

Ok so what?, we still beat you. Then you joined the big east and we still beat you. Then you got better while we got worse and you beat us. This is not rocket science. Your feelings are so hurt about SU beating all those years. You keep reminding us of the great decade you had against us. It was really a 6 year stretch. Like I said, Cincy, Pitt, S Florida, Uconn, Ville all did the same thing to us but they aren't walking around pumping their chest out like they did something. lol. Every fan bade has sore losers. Like rutgers don't

I personally only really worry about from when I was in school going forward. Whatever happened before that I'm not too concerned with. I was never a Rutgers fan...I am a Rutgers ALUM. Big difference. My frosh year was 1997 when we went 0-11 and were the worst team in the country. I think 20 years through various coaches on both sides is a fair sample of time, wouldn't you agree? And in that time period, we played a total of 16 times and you know what our record vs. SU was?
8-8. That includes the McNabb vs Shea Era AND the Schiano vs. G-Rob Era. So no, I'm not hurt about my personal experience vs. Syracuse. In fact, carrying it over to the court, I remember storming the court after we beat a Top 10 Syracuse team at the RAC in 1999 (we also beat them at home in 98). Our tormentor in football was West Virginia and it's not even close.

Didn't mean disrespect to Pitt here. I'm talking when you guys were winning national championships, producing Heisman candidates like Dorsett and Marino, when you were better than Penn State, etc. You guys absolutely do have a lot going for you right now but until you get your own on-campus stadium I think that will always hinder your recruiting somewhat. Just my opinion. And for the record, as great as Miami was in the '80's and '90's, I still think facilities/lack of on campus stadium has been a big detriment for them since they went to the ACC.

MADHAT is doing his best RutgersAl impression when it comes to overall athletic department performance. RU finished 83rd in the Directors Cup this year, last in the B1G and ahead of only Oregon State among P5 universities. Syracuse was 21st.

Okay but you can admit it was more negligence on Bailey's part more than it was Laryea making a great play. Laryea did even know he made him fumble. We also got in the red zone 3 times and came out with no points. Again, Rutgers had better players at the time. No way they should have been scrapping for a lucky win. How was they lucky to win 2010 game? SU had a great defense that year. Rutgers offense was terrible. What happened in the SU final drive that was lucky? DIdnt ask for sympathy. I do acknowledge that it was rutgers worse era. That was a long era

I tend to agree with you that if Ash shows he can win at RU - and that's an uphill climb considering the division - he doesn't have to leave, but be fair, RU is the 6th best job in its own 7-team division. There are more than a handful of jobs out there that could cause Ash to look around.

Fans on a football message board really don't care much about the Directors Cup and Olympic sports or other sports, it's a Football board, that's what we care about. In Conference Realignment, it's all about football, just like here : - ).

What about the Fullmer Cup ? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I can also say that Brian Leonard did not play in the 2004 game and I believe if he played we would have won that game. We scored 31 points without him.

I tend to agree with you that if Ash shows he can win at RU - and that's an uphill climb considering the division - he doesn't have to leave, but be fair, RU is the 6th best job in its own 7-team division. There are more than a handful of jobs out there that could cause Ash to look around.

I think we are about even with Maryland in terms of how good the HC job is and remember, Dantonio has made the Michigan State job great again much like Alvarez did at Wisconsin. Yes, RU has 3 legacy programs/college football institutions in their own division that they will never approach long term but I'm not putting Maryland or even MSU out of reach. Another John L. Smith type hire at Michigan State after Dantonio and they are back to being pedestrian.

MADHAT is doing his best RutgersAl impression when it comes to overall athletic department performance. RU finished 83rd in the Directors Cup this year, last in the B1G and ahead of only Oregon State among P5 universities. Syracuse was 21st.

I knew it was bad for us. . .but this is positively dreadful. . . well south of awful.

we finished ahead of Oregon State, among the P5. . .and Hobbs is being lauded for his Genius.

I'm willing to give Hobbs the benefit of doubt, but honestly we can't get much worse.

Except he said this...

"With the right leadership might surpass your school in overall sports programs."

That's not happening anytime soon unless RU finds a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and completely changes its athletics culture.

Congrats on the Fulmer Cup, though.:gun:

Both New Jersey and Maryland are strong recruiting territories. Only one school has Under Armour money. Today, MD is the better job.

I'm not really surprised that Meyer encouraged Ash to take the Rutgers job.

I think the more interesting comment in the NunesMagician column is that everyone (with the exception of Art Briles) told Dino Babers NOT to take the Syracuse job.

Yeah, I wish he had identified who those people were. Really curious. What were his other options?

True but what has that gotten them? Randy Edsall, DJ Durkin (first time HC just like Ash) and putrid uniforms. Also, if Under Armor was really the sugar daddy that Nike is to Oregon, why was Maryland so cash strapped that they had to leave a conference they were a founding member of?

You mean the guy who has been here for half a year? You are giving that a guy a break? How generous.

Believe me, I hope MD never becomes anything other than mediocre, but just because advantages haven't proved fruitful yet doesn't mean they're not still advantages.

In that '10 game, we had the lead for a big chunk of time, our offense was abysmal, yet still ran the ball down to about the cuse 15 before the infamous 'ankle sack' and porked FG broke our back. Cuse then had a nice drive and took a 13-10 lead with less than a minute left. With the way Krautman was all smug after that game, I wasn't shedding any tears when we pretty much tormented him the next 2 games with seemingly 50 blocked kicks. Also, in '11, Lareya was making the tackle but it was one of the Merrils who intentionally punched the ball out.

...you also may want to check some of those RU-cuse scores from the early-mid 90's; the series really didn't become 'complete obliteration' until Shea arrived...and there were clear signs cuse's bloom was off the rose before any of you even knew who GRob was.

Agreed. My freshman year was 1998 and I started to loosely follow Rutgers Football in 7th grade or so (1992). We have basically the same frame of reference.

Exactly. We had no business beating them in 1999. There were chinks in the armor showing once the Graves/Harrison/McNabb Era ended. Interesting side note: my brother played football at Southern Connecticut State in the early 90's and they ran the freeze option as Paul P used to coach there.
