Was Politi's latest artcle about Delaney and donations discussed?

Maybe my definition of upper middle class is different than yours. I’m talking about the kids from places like Basking Ridge, Chatham, etc. those are the kids that treat RU as an after thought even though it’s as good as of a school as the schools they are enamored by. In my family, my niece isn’t sniffing RU (goes to a high end private high school), but is applying to big ten schools like Maryland and Wisconsin as safety schools.

RU still has good SAT scores and a high number of applicants because there are plenty of smart people in NJ not from those affluent towns.

Rutgers has an instate branding issue.

Spruce up college Ave campus, pump up the jersey pride and history , and do some things to make it a “cool” spot. We’re not far off.

Apparently he hasn't gotten over trying to walk onto the football team and Shea not giving him the time of day I guess.
Well, it was Doug Graber ... and he was very good to me and I really respect him as a person (I think he was a good coach who got stuck with a handful of awful lazy assistant coaches, with one notable exception) ... and I was there for an entire semester ... and it was one of the best experiences I had in college ...

... but other than that, you got it right on the money.

I know of at least 3 people in my freshman year dorm from Chatham lol.

In terms of the mentality of applying to Maryland but not RU when they literally have the same ranking, yeah, not sure that ever totally goes away.

IMO it's never going to be totally eliminated. And I knew more than one person at RU from Maryland, and I am sure they felt the opposite way. It's the nature of this region.

There's a lot of people with more money than they know what to do with.

We can’t discount that NJ is a geographically a small state. I have 2 kids, one wanted to stay close to home and chose Rutgers and the other wanted to explore other locations and chose UMich. That will always be the case in NJ

Michigan is a prestigious school so that's a little different than kids who choose an equivalent (Maryland) or lesser (Cult) for extra money.

My kids are younger, so not looking at colleges just yet. I have had many nieces and nephews as well as colleagues that have gone through the application process in the last 10 years. Nothing has really changed from when i applied to school in the early 90's. It's now there is a new flavor of the month amongst kids and parents. Southern state schools seem to be the flavor. But whats funny when I ask the applicants why they aren't giving Rutgers a try (LSU, South Carolina, Penn State), they pretty much all say because I won't get in. These are not dumb kids but they are more realistic.

Kids that are getting into UCLA, UMich USC UVA from these "affluent towns" more than likely were never coming here but the kids that go to Penn State UMD UDel may not have had a realistic chance (i know they are good schools as well). Rutgers is not a lay up to get into. And it's easier for some of these parents to justify sending their kids to LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama then admitting they got rejected by Rutgers.

When you're from the northeast, schools like Alabama .etc are pretty easy to get in. They crave for those students.

Yep. Want that out of state tuition...And the football team gives parents something to brag about. I see flags flying of all the SEC schools in front of houses that in years past had IVY flags. Spoke to a buddy of mine, Far Hills Country Day, Delbarton guy, said he saw this coming 10 or so years ago. He would get the college announcements from the Far Hills alumni newsletter. It was historically filled with IVY, high liberal arts, the Public Ivy's, then it started with the occasional Alabama, Ole Miss, UF. Now it's filled with Southern state schools, schools these kids or parents would have been embarrassed by in years past.

Vermont used to be a flavor of the decades for kids from affluent towns who fell short of Ivy standards. Is that still the case?

Not sure. I knew a couple of kids that went there in my time. My botany lab partner was a girl from Vermont. Even with in state tuition and grants it was cheaper for her to go to Rutgers as an out of state resident.

Elon, Gettysburg, James Madjson and some Carolina schools are in favor

But for "some" majors, Maryland may be a better choice. While RU has a great computer science department/program, Maryland (and Illinois) have very highly ranked programs arguably with better reputations.

Gettysburg is a college, not a university. Solid academics but apples and oranges with respect to Rutgers.
I'm well aware-- I'm showing schools that are recently popular to be applied to by nj kids.

No doubt, I am speaking generally. Credit to the 17 year old kid who knows what he or she wants to do with their lives. But I have big doubts that any kid is choosing Alabama for academic reasons, for example.
