We actually will be much improved next season.

The 3 position groups imo RU needs the biggest upgrade are LB, OL, and WR. I agree with you on 2 of the 3.

It does suck that the B1G East is killing it on the recruiting trail overall but it is what it is.
I would say quarterback is the biggest need for a upgrade because the offense was abysmal in every relevant stat.

I don't care if Rutgers was bringing in Alabama's class it still going to take more than one class to be much improved next season. You simply can't count on a bunch of freshmen contributing especially in a conference as difficult as the B1G.
I agree that you can't count on most 18 year old kids to contribute right away. As noted on
one of Sean Browns threads we may get some help at wide receiver. The biggest improvement should come with the qb's.
One more year will definatley help these players to become more familiar with the system. Same with the defense.

Can you or @gef21 comment on what PJ Fleck has done, as analyzed in this article?
As best understood, he distributes 80% of the plays to 3 playmakers.
Assuming we had Grant back, and 2 more playmakers in Mitchell and one other, could something like this system work for RU?

The link says it is similar to what McElwain did at Colorado State, called a "bell cow" offense.

This looks similar to Bobby Petrino's "feed the studs" offensive philosophy. Systems like this rely on execution of a few concepts and putting playmakers into favorable matchups. You do need multiple game-changing playmakers to really make it work. You really have to have a dual threat QB that the defense has to account for. This could work at RU if the coaches develop a QB like that to go with other threats. It goes without saying that the playcalling would have to be more imaginative.

The only positions I see ru improving significantly next season is WR. Maybe QB and LB if things go smoothly.

I agree with you. I think we get better at skill positions on offense and our secondary gets better. Linebackers and both lines are huge question marks and I just don't know if we get any better at those positions. Ash also better do something about our special teams.

I think distributing the ball that way is an incredibly great system and one I have been a part of. We called it a touch count and we would have 3 guys who we knew we had to get to touch the ball 10-15 times a game and a few other guys in the 5-10 and a few in the 1-5 range. We stuck to this religiously. We would see a guy is only at 1 we would run plays to get him the ball and it was great for us. We would count at half time and see where we were and adjust accordingly. Of course if a RB had a real hot hand we would not cut him off but we made sure guys touched the ball.

The Minnesota Vikings did something like this a few years ago, but it was only with Randy Moss. They called it "The Randy Ratio".

Can we PLEASE improve the kicking game?
We can't kick a FG over 38 yards, can't force other teams to start on their own 25 after a kick off, and our D seems to play on a half field far too often.

Are we recruiting any kicker / punters?

I think next year is another 2-10 season for us unfortunately. Both lines will not be good and the LB crew will still struggle.

Its two years from now that we should start to look decent.

Next years schedule has Morgan State and Eastern Michigan, so if you are predicting 2 wins, that means you don't think Rutgers can win a single Big 10 team. That is incredibly pessimistic and disrespectful to Coach Ash and the players. You honestly don't think they can win a single Big 10 game ??? not all of the teams are powerhouses, in fact some are mediocre

It's amazing how insanely low our fans have put their expectations of our football team.
Might as well beat Eastern Michigan and Morgan St. in Games #2 and #3 next year and forfeit the rest of the 2017 season. Unfrick'n believable. Makes me sick of our milk toast fans.

If the guys in the trenches,on both sides of the ball,do NOT improve their play ,it will be another looong season.

It looks like we will have a half decent team next year especially if the recruiting class holds up. Not getting shut out in any games next year.
They should be improved but I'm not sure how much better they will be. Both lines will need to be rebuilt and there will be true freshman all over the field. Sign me up for more competitive games and an offense that can move the ball.

if we go 2-10 again, then say sayonara to ash

I don't see how anyone can realistically rely on a group of freshmen to turn around a program in their first year in it. RU would see a quicker impact if they could bring in some jucos/ grad transfers to help depth and development of the recruits.

Definitely hoping a bunch of our recruits come in early. If I wanted early playing time, this is the program I want to be in.
This has been the mantra for what 10 years now?
Sheesh I sure wish we turn that page soon.

Gentlemen it's a 5 year plan at least so next year is the next step, that is, getting ash recruits into his system. 4 or 5 wins is realistic. But it's only one class so you have to wait for year 3 for the next class and some maturity. 5 to 6 wins in year 3 and so on.

WRONG.

We're not going to judge it on wins and losses but how do you build a program? Are we doing all the things that we need to do on a daily basis to build a program? And, if everybody could be as close of an observer of what he's done in the past year, they would see that he's putting all of the right pieces in place to be successful as we move down the road.

Agree 100%.

Next year's team will probably have the same record, maybe one more win since the Laviano/Allen experiment won't waste half the season.
