From Howie Kussoy's selection column:

MICHIGAN STATE -14 OVER RUTGERS
"Rarely do I advocate taking a double digit road favorite, but rarely do you need just two touchdowns from a potential playoff team against a team that has the potential to never see what the top of its conference looks like"

The selection may turn out to be correct, but the commentary was totally unnecessary.

I'm smelling Syracuse grad here.

Maryland.

What if he is wrong? Does he lose his job?
If not, then why even bring it up here?

Given the record of Rutgers vs. highly-ranked teams over the years, the turmoil that has surrounded the program over the last month or so, and the low regard most place on our coaching staff why would anyone not pick Michigan State ?
Plus, they have better players.
One can only hope the home field crowd can make some noise and inspire the team to bring its A game.
BTW, I learned a long time ago that the only prognosticators to listen to are the ones that are laying some cash down on the outcome.

Could be PSU, Rutgers, Miami, or just someone who's paying attention. We have to show something more than what we have in order to a void press like that.
Truth. The last 6 games against anyone in the top 40 we have lost by 42, 39, 37, 24, 18, 14, 13. Plus, we just lost at Penn St by 25. So, we could cover but it doesn't seem all that likely.

As far as covering goes, I think we are 1-3 and MSU is 0-5. Neither team has played up to expectations. Let's just hope our offense can do something against their injury-riddled defense.

I really can't blame the guy. We have shown zero ability to keep games close against strong competition, let alone a top ten team.

From an outsider's perspective, this does seem like an easy pick. Michigan State blew us out last year and is a top 10 team. I understand their O line is decimated, but so is our defensive backfield and our D Line hasn't scared anyone yet. On the other side, I give their defense the advantage against our offense. Having said that, the line I saw has actually moved down (from 14 on Tuesday to 13.5 today). Why is the money favoring RU right now?

I would guess it's a combination of it being a night away game (which has been shown to help), MSU being unimpressive and banged up and Mich being their next game. RU is a tough team to get up for, and MSU is very easy to RU to get excited about.

So, basically, Howie Kussoy's (whoever the heck that is) is a Rutgers hater.

Imagine that. So rare to find these days.

This, plus Carroo.

Win big games, at least once in a while, and this won't happen. The college football world is simply not impressed by the kind of wins that send shivers down the spines of many of our fans, like the victory against Maryland last year that sent this board into an ecstatic frenzy.

While what he says is easy to defend, Kussoy has always been snarky in his comments regarding RU.

It amazes me that anyone can look at our results against good teams and assume that someone who has something sarcastic to say while picking against us must have an agenda, is a "hater" (as overused as "respect") or went to Syracuse. Why do so many people -- the same ones who bitch about how awful we looked against anyone good last year and rip Flood for it -- forget those games and label people who use those results as ammunition?

The country does not respect Rutgers football. We were a fun story a few years back. Then we treaded water for a couple of years while our basketball program went deeper into the toilet. Then we got a Big Ten invite nobody in the nation thinks we deserved, so they hold that against us. It's not hard to figure out.

All that being said, I have an oddly good feeling about this game. Michigan State is vulnerable, night games are usually really good for home teams, they have to be looking ahead to Michigan, etc. etc. etc. I question whether our leadership is smart enough and our players talented enough to take advantage of the opportunity, but it is there.

I can't wait, and I only have to wait until 5 p.m. PDT.

Did you read the rest of his picks? That's his style.
