She was a Shetland Sheep dog who was a faithful companion for almost 13 years. A year ago she was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma and we had the gigantic tumor removed. She almost made it a year and did surprisingly well until the last few weeks. It is never an easy decision but to see her like that was enough for us. RIP Cleo.

One last thought, she was the smartest dog I have ever known. She could learn something after a few tries and understood almost everything asked of her. Such a beautiful, smart dog.

Sorry to hear About this. Hope you and your family can smile about the memories you have with her.

Sorry to hear that bro - must be hard on the family. I have a Sheltie who will be 11 this year - little bit bigger than yours (40 lbs). Dog just loves being with people and is so good-natured.

My sincere condolences. Sorry to hear about your family friend. Sounds like you took her quality of life into consideration and made the right choice. It's hard to say goodbye and it's harder to make the right call.

There is no better pet than a dog, nothing or no one gives so much unconditional love.

Sorry to hear. I've been a cat/dog owner my whole life so I know the feeling of having to put them down or, as in one case with my cat, seeing him having a stroke (that's what I think it was) and dying right before my eyes. I currently have four cats that are getting up there and two dogs which are 5 and 7 yo. I found my last dog dead on the living room floor when I woke up one morning. Still regret that she died alone out there.

Very sorry to hear this. I've had dogs for quite awhile and they really do become part of the family. I know it was difficult, but it sounds like you made the right decision.

very sorry to hear...it breaks my heart every time I hear of someone losing a member of their family like this as I know that I will have to go through it twice in the next 10 years or so. :/

This always triggers the memory of putting my pug down. I still miss him today.

Dogs normally live only 10-13 years, so just know that she lived a full life and you enjoyed every bit of it.

Recently had to put down my girl. She was part Sheltie. Don't know if I'll ever have a better dog than her.

I feel your feels, OP.

Don't take it too hard. Dogs instinctively wonder off to die alone. It could be based on the pack mentally of not burdening or slowing down the hunt.

Your dog sounds a lot like our Cleo. When she had the tumor removed last year they said she would only last a few months. Until recently she still helped my wife and I around the house. Yes, she would collect my kids clothes that missed the laundry basket and bring them to us. She would help me take out the garbage and recycling.

The past few weeks she all of a sudden could no longer get up, even to do her favorite tasks. The last few days she stopped eating all together and lost her vibrant personality. Her gums lost their color a sign of struggling to breath. It was time.

I agree. My wife and I both prayed the last week that our dog would go in her sleep here at home to avoid this decision.

putting down a dog is one of lifes most unsavory moments. really sucks.

My deepest sympathies. I Had a similar experience about 9 months ago. Still feeling the pain.

A couple of years ago we had to put down my Shepherd Husky mix. The dog was 15 years old and It was part of the family before three of my kids. Since they always had Kodi in their lives I thought it would hit them pretty hard. Turns out it hit me harder than anyone else.

I'm sure you gave your dog a great life and it returned the favor with affection and loyalty. Neither could ask for much more than that.

I have an 8 year old daughter & am divorced almost 6 years. My ex has our now 10 year old black lab & I have a 9 year old yellow lab. My daughter has grown up with these 2 . I fear the day that they pass. Having my daughter 1/2 the time , it is interesting how the dog handles it. Hears the door open when I come home & runs to greet. If it's just me, she stands there looking around. If it's my daughter with me, she starts jumping around & kissing my daughter, she's so excited. Flows her around & sleeps with her.
Sorry for your loss, been through it too often.

One thing (of many) I will remember, my 20-year old son (who posts here on this board) slept with her last night in our family room just in case the report was as bad as expected today at the Vet. We got the dog for him almost 13 years ago. Last night I asked what he was doing at midnight coming out of his room with his blanket and pillow and he said they were having a sleepover.

We have had to do it three times. It is not an easy decision. Several years ago the following was passed on to me. I now pass it on to you.May it comfort you to know that the choice you made for your pet was both loving and humane.Hopefully as time passes, the sadness Will fade and the happy memories will linger.

Sorry for your loss wisr01...animals play such a vital part in our daily lives...remember the happy times you spent together .

Have a 15 y/o cocker spaniel and 3 cats, one of them is 19 and not doing well. It's the only bad thing about pets - they don't live anywhere near as long as we do and it's always hard to say goodbye.

My condolences, it's always very sad to see them go.

Such a beautiful dog. I'm truly sorry for your loss. My sheepdog is 14 and I know his time is approaching.

Cleo will be waiting for you in the next life. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I also had a sheepdog we had to put down 6 years ago, and said never again,so heartbreaking. Well after about 6 months, I told my wife, the house seemed empty, and I wanted another dog. Well, we got a Golden Retriever, and she is the best most loyal dog we have ever had. Your pain will subside, and I hope you'll give another dog the loving home they deserve, and you'll provide.

So sorry to hear about your dog. They truly are great companions.

very sorry. Still have not been able to write about losing my fellow at 14 a year and a half ago --3 days before my wedding.

Very sorry for your loss...
Loyal

Exactly. There are dogs (and cats) in shelters that need homes who will otherwise be destroyed.

So true

There are those who find it hard to understand losing a dog is like losing a member of the family. Then again they will never know the joys, comfort companionship, and in some cases, sense of protection our four legged friends provide. Years later I still get a knot in my stomach thinking about the two dogs I've had to put down. We have another dog now, not a replacement, but rather another addition to the family. When the time is right, think about getting another dog, heavens knows there enough out there that could use a family like yours.

Sorry for your loss. Had to put down our English Springer a couple of years ago. I still miss Abby
I got a txt message from my youngest son a couple of days ago, he's a fresham at RU, he had found a pic of Abby on his phone from years ago. Pets have provided so many shared family memories for us. We've truly been blessed by having them in our lives

My sincerest condolences. I was depressed enough just reading about your Cleo and all of the other heartfelt replies, but this one pushed me over the edge. That's so sad.

Re: condolences

What a beautiful dog. I'm very sorry for your family's loss.
